It is identified that the diamond films grown o bias-treated (100) silicon showed different surface morphologies and film textures according to the initial applied dc bias voltage at the same growth condition. The highly oriented diamond film (HODF) was successfully grown on -200 V bias-treated silicon substrate in which the heteroepitaxial relation of $(100)_{dimond}//(100)_{si}\; and\; [110]_{diamond}//[110]_{si}$ was identified. On the contrary, the heteroepitaxial relation was considerably disturbed in the samples bias-voltage was a key factor in growing the highly oriented diamond film on (100) silicon substrate. Considering the experimental results, we proposed a new model about heteroepitaxial diamond growth on silicon, in which 9 diamond unit cell are matched with 4 silicon cells and the bond covalency of both atoms is satisfied via the intermediate layer at the interface as well.
Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is associated with a considerable proportion of strokes and head injuries. The mechanism of brain cell injury associated with hemorrhage may be different from that due to pure ischemia. Therefore, it is essential that models of intracerebral hemorrhage be developed and well characterized in animal model. Yukmijihwangwon (YM) has been known to reinforce the vital essence and have antioxidant activities. In this study, the protective effects of YM was investigated against ICH in animal models. Adult rats had 2 microliters saline containing 0.5 and 5 unit bacterial collagenase infused into the right caudate nucleus. It was found out that YM was effective in protecting brain against ICH.
Sandwich plates are widely used in lightweight design due to their high strength and stiffness to weight ratio. Due to the heterogeneous structure of sandwich plates, they can exhibit local instabilities (wrinkling), which lead to a sudden loss of stiffness in the structure. This paper presents an analytical solution to the wrinkling problem of sandwich plates. The solution is based on the Rayleigh-Ritz method, by assuming an appropriate deformation field. In contrast to the other approaches up to now, this model takes arbitrary and different orthotropic face layers, finite core thickness and orthotropic core material into account. This approach is the first to cover the wrinkling of unsymmetric sandwiches and sandwiches composed of orthotropic FRP face layers, which are most common in advanced lightweight design. Despite the generality of the solution, the computational effort is kept within bounds. The results have been verified using other analytical solutions and unit cell 3D FE calculations.
Insight into behaviour of pedestrians as well as tools to assess passenger flow conditions are important in for instance planning and geometric design of railway station under regular and safety-critical circumstances. Algorithm for passenger flow analysis based on DEM(Discrete Element Method) is newly developed. There are lots of similarity between particle-laden two phase flow and passenger flow. The velocity component of 1st phase corresponds to the unit vector of calculation cell, each particle to passenger, volume fraction to population density and the particle velocity to the walking velocity, etc. And, the walking velocity of passenger is also represented by the function of population density. Key algorithms are developed to determine the position of passenger, population density and numbering to each passenger. To verify the effectiveness of new algorithm, passenger flow analysis for the basic models of railway station is conducted.
Photosynthetic variation in field grown soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv Hodgson78] was studied in relation to leaf anatomical variation. Variations in mesophyll morphology were accentuated by manipulating source and sink size. At R3 stage, two treatments were started: one was thinning and continu-ous debranching(6. 5 plants rather than 26 plants per m of row and remaining plants were debranched weekly), and the other was continuous partial depodding (allowing only one pod to develop at each mainstem node). Gas exchange characteristics, mesophyll cell volume and surface area per unit leaf surface, and microclimatic parameters were measured on the intact terminal leaflet at the 10th node. Observations were made 5 times with 3 to 4 day intervals starting R4 stage. Two models were used to compute leaf photosynthetic rates: one considered no effect of mesophyll morphology on photosynthesis, and the other considered potential effects of variations in mesophyll cell volume and surface area on diffusion and biochemical processes. Seventy nine percent of total photosynthetic variations observed in the experiment was explained by the latter, while 69% of the same variations was explained by the former model. By incorporating the mesophyll morphology concept, the predictability was improved by 14.6% in the field condition. Additional Index Words: photosynthesis model, leaf anatomy, Glycine max (L.) Merr., mesophyll surface area, mesophyll cell volume.
Haloacetonitriles (HANs) are nitrogenous disinfection by-products (DBPs) that have been reported to have a higher toxicity than the other groups of DBPs. The adsorption process is mostly used to remove HANs in aqueous solutions. Functionalized composite materials tend to be effective adsorbents due to their hydrophobicity and specific adsorptive mechanism. In this study, the removal of dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) from tap water by adsorption on thiol-functionalized mesoporous composites made from natural rubber (NR) and hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS-SH) was investigated. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results revealed that the thiol group of NR/HMS was covered with NR molecules. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated an expansion of the hexagonal unit cell. Adsorption kinetic and isotherm models were used to determine the adsorption mechanisms and the experiments revealed that NR/HMS-SH had a higher DCAN adsorption capacity than powered activated carbon (PAC). NR/HMS-SH adsorption reached equilibrium after 12 hours and its adsorption kinetics fit well with a pseudo-second-order model. A linear model was found to fit well with the DCAN adsorption isotherm at a low concentration level.
Several centrifuge modelling tests were performed to compare sand compaction pile (SCP) with gravel compaction pile (GCP) at the point of bearing capacity. SCP and GCP were installed as 30, 40, 50, 60, 70% of replacement ratio in cylindrical model tank (diameter = 20 cm, height = 40 cm), and the loading tests were carried out to analyze the bearing characteristics of soft clay ground reinforced by SCP and GCP. As a result of loading tests, the bearing capacities of soft grounds reinforced by SCP and GCP increase with increasing replacement ratio of pile, and a GCP reinforced ground has larger bearing capacity than that of a SCP reinforced ground. Several proposed bearing capacity equations for ground reinforced by SCP or GCP were compared with loading test results.
When two layers of carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays are loaded to mate, the free ends of individual CNTs come into contact at the interface of the two layers. This leads to a higher contact resistance due to a smaller contact region. However, when the free CNT ends of one array penetrate into the mating array, the contact region increases, effectively lowering the contact resistance. To explore the penetration of mating CNTs, we perform molecular dynamic simulations of a simple unit cell model, incorporating four CNTs in the lower array layer coupled with a single moving CNT on the upper layer. The interaction with neighboring CNTs is modelled by long-range carbon bond order potential (LCBOP I). The model structure is optimized by energy minimization through the conjugate gradient method. A NVT ensemble is used for maintain a room temperature during simulation. The time integration is performed through the velocity-Verlet algorithm. A significant vibrational motion of CNTs is captured when penetration is not available, resulting in a specific vibration mode with a high frequency. Due to this vibrational behavior, the random behaviors of CNT motion for predicting the penetration are confirmed under the specific gap distances between CNTs. Thus, the probability of penetration is examined according to the gap distance between CNTs in the lower array and the aspect ratio of CNTs. The penetration is significantly affected by the vibration mode due to the van der Waals forces between CNTs.

Unsteady lift measurements were carried out in order to investigate the effects of phase difference and reduced frequency of a dragonfly-type model with two pairs of wing. A load-cell was employed to measure the lift generated by a plunging motion of the dragonfly-type model with the incidence angles of 0$^{circ}$. Experimental conditions are as follows: phase differences between fore- and hind-wings are 0$^{circ}$, 90$^{circ}$, 180$^{circ}$, and 270$^{circ}$, and reduced frequencies are 0.075, 0.15 and 0.225, respectively. The freestream velocity was 143 m/sec and corresponding chord Reynolds number was $3.4{\times}10^3$. The variation of phase-averaged lift coefficients during one cycle of the wing motion is presented. Results show that the total value of the positive lift coefficient during one cycle of the wing motion is the largest at the phase difference of 90$^{circ}$, and that the maximum lift coefficient and lift coefficient per unit of time increases with reduced frequency.

The development of a next-generation hydrogen compressor, a key component in the expansion of hydrogen charging infrastructure, is in progress. In order to improve compression efficiency and durability, it is important to optimize the precision forming and shearing processes of the diaphragm, which is the bellows unit cell, as well as the optimization of diaphragm shape itself. In this study, we aim to show that die and process design technology that can synchronize the inner and outer shearing points of the diaphragm for the precision forming of product can be constructed based on a numerical simulation. First, the damage model that can predict the fracture points will be determined using the shear load and shear zone measurements obtained by performing a blanking test of AISI-633 stainless steel. Next, we will explain the overall procedure based on numerical analysis model how to determine the shearing points according to the deformation pattern of urethane die for various shearing die design.
