On the Optimum Modelization for a Spray Column Direct Contact Heat Exchanger (분사칼럼식 직접접촉 열교환기의 최적 모델링을 위한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to lay groundwork for a complete analysis of two component flow by analyzing a single component flow made of continuous fluid without dispersed phase. In order to achieve uniform velocity distributions which are desirable in designing an optimum spray column direct contact heat exchanger, the influence of injection nozzle orientation has been investigated for axial and radial injections. The results that radial injection ensures more uniform velocity distributions compared to the axial case. The flow characteristics in a spray column have been investigated with various L/D values and inlet velocities, the most uniform internal velocity distributions have been obtained for the case of L/D=10 and 0.1m/sec. In the present investigation, it is shown that radial injection method for the continuous flow is advantageous in obtaining desirable uniform velocity distributions in a spray column. It is also found that as the value of L/D increases and the inlet velocity decreases, the flow improves to be better uniform velocity distributions.

  • A numerical study for laminar flow in the entrance region of helical tubes for uniform inlet velocity conditions is carried out by means of the finite volume method to investigate the effects of Reynolds number, pitch and curvature ratio on the flow development. This results cover a curvature ratio range of 1/10$\sim$1/320, a pitch range of 0.0$\sim$3.2, and a Reynolds number range of 125$\sim$2000. It has been found that the curvature ratio does significantly effect on the angle of flow development, but the pitch and Reynolds number do not. The characteristic angle $\phi_c(=\phi/\sqrt{\delta})$, or the non-dimensional length $\overline{l}(=l\sqrt{\delta}cos(atan\lambda)/d)$ can be used to represent the flow development for uniform inlet velocity conditions. In uniform inlet velocity conditions, the growth of boundary layer delays the flow development attributed to centrifugal force, and in which conditions the amplitude of flow oscillations is smaller than that in parabolic inlet velocity conditions. If the pitch increases or if the curvature ratio or Reynolds number decreases, the minimum friction factor and the fully developed average friction factor normalized with the friction factor of a straight tube and the flow oscillations decrease.

Experimental study of bubble flow behavior during flow instability under uniform and non-uniform transverse heat distribution

  • Experiments are conducted to study bubble flow behavior during the instability of subcooled boiling under uniform and non-uniform transverse heating. The non-uniform heat distribution introduces nonuniform bubble generation and condensation rates on the heated surface, which is different from the uniform heating. These bubble generation and condensation characteristics introduce a non-uniform local pressure distribution in the transverse direction, which creates an extra non-uniform pressure on the flowing bubbles. Therefore, different bubble flow behavior can be observed between uniform and non-uniform heating conditions. In the uniform heating, bubble velocity fluctuations are low, and the bubbles travel straight along the axial direction. In the non-uniform heating, more fluctuation in the bubble velocity occurs at low mass flow rate and high subcooled inlet temperatures, and reverse flow is observed. Additionally, the bubbles show a zigzag trajectory when they pass through the channel, which indicates the existence of cross flow in the transverse direction.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate ventilation efficiency of 4-stage slot hood by variation of slot width, flow rate, hood size and baffle size. The slot velocity, control velocity and plenum velocity were related to slot width and the distance between source of contamination and hood. The results obtained from laboratory experiment for local exhaust ventilation systems were as follows ; 1. When slot widths were constant(equally changed) and the velocity was 6-10 m/s, the slot velocity from 1st slot to 4th slot gradually decreased. As the slot width-to-slot length ratio(WLR) decreased, the slot velocity of each stage increased. But if WLR value was less than 0.04, the slot velocity decreased. 2. When slot velocity exceeded 10 m/s with constant slot widths, the slot velocity of each stage was uniform. 3. When the slot velocity was uniform within 10 m/s and the first slot width was 14-20 mm, the slot width ratio between 1st slot and each of three other slots were 1, 1.25, 1.5 and 3.0, respectively. 4. The slot and plenum velocity were uniform when exhaust flow rate changed from 14 to $19m^3/min$ and there were no hood splitter vanes. 5. When the slot velocity at each stage was uniform, the control velocity at site 30 cm away from hood No.2 increased from 0.15-0.30 to 0.25-0.45 m/s and the control distance from 20 to 30 cm(about 1.5 times).

Calibration of Water Velocity Profile in Circular Water Channel Using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV를 이용한 회류수조의 유속 분포 교정에 관한 연구)

  • This experimental study was performed to find rpms of the impeller and the surface flow accelerator to make a uniform velocity vertical distribution in the circular water channel. PIV technique was employed to measure the water velocity profiles into the water depth from the free surface. The number of instantaneous velocity profiles was decomposed into mean and turbulence velocity components, and the distribution of velocity fluctuation and turbulence intensity were computed for each experimental condition. From these results, the velocity uniformity was quantitatively determined to present the flow quality in the measuring section of the circular water channel. It has been shown that the proper operation of the surface flow accelerator would make the uniform velocity profiles and reduce the velocity fluctuation near the free surface.

  • Heat transfer performance variation of a condenser caused by non-uniform distribution of air flow was investigated using a numerical simulation method. A heat exchanger used for a outdoor unit of a commercial heat pump system and represented by a numerical model was selected. Non-uniform profile of air-velocity was constructed by measuring the air velocity at various locations of the outdoor unit. Simulation was conducted for various refrigerant circuits and air flow conditions. Simulation results show that the heat transfer capacity was reduced depending on the air-flow rate and the refrigerant circuit configuration. It is also shown that the capacity reduction rate is increased as the average air velocity decreases.

Study on the curving phenomenon of rectangular shaped product in extrusion process (사각형 단면을 가진 제품의 압출가공시 제품의 굽힘현상에 관한 연구)

  • The kinematically admissible velocity field is developed for the analysis of extruded products. The curving of product in extrusion is caused by the linearly distributed longitudinal velocity on the cross-section of the workpiece at the die exit. In the analysis, the longitudinal velocity in extrusion direction is divided into the uniform velocity and the deviated velocity. In order to satisfy the requrement of the kinematically admissible velocity field, the average value of the deviated velocity should be zero. At the same time, it should linearly change with the distance form the center of gravity of the cross-section of the workpiece. The results of the analysis show that the curvature of product increses with increses in eccentricity of gravity center of the cross-section of workpiece at die entrance form that of the cross-section at the die exit. In the analysis, the longitudinal velocity in extrusion direction is divided into the uniform velocity and the deviated velocity. In order to satisfy the requrement of the kinematically admissible velocity field, the average value of the deviated velocity should be zero. At the same time, it should linearly change with the distance from the center of gravity of the cross-section of the workpiece.   • Precision forging technology that can control flow velocity of workpiece have been developed to minimize the amounts of machining. To get the uniform rib length, flow velocity distribution is needed to be estimated and controlled. Computer-aided design is known for very effective to estimate the deformation behavior and design the die for controlling the flow velocity. In this study, die design to control the deformation velocity are investigated using the DEFORM-2D about rib-web shape parts. Also we can get uniform rib length by enforcing the back pressure at end section of rib. The applied load of back pressure farming is lower than that of conventional forging. These results are analysed and confirmed by the experiment.
