In this study, we conducted the study of the merits and demerits of the laser flash and the divided-bar methods for measuring the thermal conductivity of rocks and investigated applicability of the divided-bar apparatus which was developed by KIGAM. The laser flash method can measure thermal diffusivity, specific heat capacity, and thermal conductivity of rocks with even small thickness (< ~3 mm) in the high temperature range($25-200^{\circ}C$) in non-contact mode. For the laser flash method, samples must be uniform and homogeneous. In the case of the divided-bar method, the apparatus measures only thermal conductivity of rock samples at the room temperature. We measured thermal conductivities of 12 rock samples with low density and high porosity using two methods. In the laser flash method, there exist potential errors caused by the effect of pulse dispersion and reflection by various minerals and porosity in rock samples; the difference in thermal conductivity values measured on the front surface and the opposite surface ranges from 0.001 to 0.140 W/mK with the standard deviation of 0.003~0.089 W/mK, which seems to be caused by heterogeneity of rock samples. On the contrary, the divided-bar apparatus shows stable thermal conductivity measurements and relatively small measurement errors; the difference in thermal conductivity values, just as we applied to the laser frash method, is 0.001~0.016 W/mK with the standard deviation 0.001~0.034 W/mK. In turn, the divided-bar method can be applied to more thick samples that are more representative of bulk thermal conductivity.

Commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V alloys have been widely used in implant materials such as dental and orthopedic implants due to their corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and good mechanical properties. However, surface modification of titanium and titanium alloys is necessary to improve osseointegration between implant surface and bone. Especially, when titanium oxide nanotubes are formed on the surface of titanium alloy, cell adhesion is greatly improved. In addition, plasma electrolytic oxide (PEO) coatings have a good safety for osseointegration and can easily and quickly form coatings of uniform thickness with various pore sizes. Recently, the effects of bone element such as magnesium, zinc, strontium, silicon, and manganese for bone regeneration are researching in dental implant field. The purpose of this study was researched on the surface morphology of PEO-treated Ti-6Al-4V alloy after anodic titanium oxide treatmentusing various instruments. Ti-6Al-4V ELI disks were used as specimens for nanotube formation and PEO-treatment. The solution for the nanotube formation experiment was 1 M $H_3PO_4$ + 0.8 wt. % NaF electrolyte was used. The applied potential was 30V for 1 hours. The PEO treatment was performed after removing the nanotubes by ultrasonics for 10 minutes. The PEO treatment after removal of the nanotubes was carried out in the $Ca(CH_3)_2{\cdot}H_2O+(CH_3COO)_2Mg{\cdot}4H_2O+Mn(CH_3COO)_2{\cdot}4H_2O+Zn(CH_3CO_2)_2Zn{\cdot}2H_2O+Sr(CH_2COO)_2{\cdot}0.5H_2O+C_3H_7CaO_6P$ and $Na_2SiO_3{\cdot}9H_2O$ electrolytes. And the PEO-treatment time and potential were 3 minutes at 280V. The morphology changes of the coatings on Ti-6Al-4V alloy surface were observed using FE-SEM, EDS, XRD, AFM, and scratch tester. The morphology of PEO-treated surface in 5 ion coating solution after nanotube removal showed formation or nano-sized mesh and micro-sized pores.
This study aims to reduce the production cost of mushrooms and therefore boost the income of mushroom producers. The addition of a 10% concentration of herb medicine refuse was adequate for promoting mycelium growth in Flammulina velutipes. A moisture content of 60% in the culture medium was adequate for promoting hyphal growth. The optimum temperature and humidity were $16^{\circ}C$ and 70%-85%, respectively. The average yield of Flammulina velutipes fruting body per 1,100 ml bottle was 275-282 g, which is similar to that of the control. The outbreak of diseases such as mildew and bacterial blotch in mushroom was never observed in the bottle treated with herb medicine refuse. Fewer deformed and second-class quality mushrooms were observed than in the control group. Deviation reduced, and mushroom growth was observed to be significantly uniform. The winter mushroom had a white fruiting body with a hemispherical shape. The diameter of the mushroom cap was 9.2-9.3 mm, stipe length was 12.7-12.8 cm, and thickness was 3.3-3.4 mm; these were almost the same as those in the control group. The partial hardness of winter mushrooms in both the experimental and the control groups showed that the stipe ($54.6-57.3g/cm^2$) is a little harder than the mushroom cap ($46.8-47.6g/cm^2$). The calories and nutrients per 100 g of mushrooms in the control and samples were similar to each other.

The primary purposes of this study are to understand a fundamental aspect of current uniformity around a reinforcing bar (rebar) in cement mortar, and to develop an accurate monitoring method in a wet-dry cycling process with the alternative current (AC) impedance method. Three cement mortar specimens with two embedded rebars were prepared in the laboratory. As a main variable, the distance between two rebars was designed to be 10, 20 and 30 mm with the same thickness of 20 mm. To simulate the corrosion of rebars in concrete structures in a marine environment, three cement mortar specimens were exposed to 15 wet-drying cycles (24-hour-immersion in seawater and 48-hour-drying in a room temperature) in the laboratory. It was observed that the potential level shifted to a noble value during corrosion potential monitoring, which is attributed to acceleration of dissolved oxygen diffusion at the drying process. AC impedance was measured in a frequency range from 100 kHz to 1 mHz on a wet-drying process. A theoretical model was proposed to explain the interface condition between the rebars and cement mortar by using the equivalent circuit consisting of a solution resistance, a charge transfer resistance and a CPE (constant phase element). It was observed that the diffusion impedance appeared in a low frequency range as corrosion of rebars progresses. At the drying stage of the wet-drying cycles, the currents line for monitoring tended to be non-uniform at the interface of rebar/mortar, being phase shift, ${\theta}$, close to $-45^{\circ}$.
In situ patterned zinc oxide thin films were prepared by precipitation of Zn(NO$_3$)$_2$ aqueous solution containing urea and by microcontact printing using Self-Assembled Monolayers(SAMs) on A1/SiO$_2$/Si substrates. The visible precipitation of Zn(OH)$_2$ that was formed in the Zn(NO$_3$)$_2$ aqueous solution containing urea was enhanced with an increase of the reaction temperature and the amount of urea. As the reaction time of Zn(NO$_3$)$_2$ with urea was prolonged, the thickness and grain size of Zn(OH)$_2$ thin layers were increased, respectively. The optimum precipitation condition was at 80$\^{C}$ for 1 h for the solution with the ratio of Zn(NO$_3$)$_2$ to urea of 1 : 8. Homogeneous ZnO thin films were fabricated by the heat treatment of 600$\^{C}$ for 1 h of Zn(OH)$_2$ precipitation on Al/SiO$_2$/Si substrate. This was available to the in-situ patterned ZnO thin films with uniform grain size. Hydrophobic SAM, Octadecylphosphonic Acid(OPA) and hydrophilic SAM, 2-Carboxyethylphosphonic Acid(CPA) were applied on the Al/SiO$_2$/Si substrate by microcontact printing method. In situ patterned ZnO thin film was successfully prepared by the heat treatment of Zn(OH)$_2$ precipitated on the surface of hydrophilic SAM, CPA.

It is known that semiconductor quantum-dot (QD) heterostructures have superior zero-dimensional quantum confinement, and they have been successfully applied to semiconductor laser diodes (QDLDs) for optical communication and infrared photodetectors (QDIPs) for thermal images [1]. The self-assembled QDs are normally formed at Stranski-Krastanov (S-K) growth mode utilizing the accumulated strain due to lattice-mismatch existing at heterointerfaces between QDs and cap layers. In order to increase the areal density and the number of stacks of QDs, recently, sub-monolayer (SML)-thick QDs (SQDs) with reduced strain were tried by equivalent thicknesses thinner than a wetting layer (WL) existing in conventional QDs (CQDs) by S-K mode. Despite that it is very different from CQDs with a well-defined WL, the SQD structure has been successfully applied to QDIP[2]. In this study, optical characteristics are investigated by using photoluminescence (PL) spectra taken from self-assembled InAs/GaAs QDs whose coverage are changing from submonolayer to a few monolayers. The QD structures were grown by using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on semi-insulating GaAs (100) substrates, and formed at a substrate temperature of 480$^{\circ}C$ followed by covering GaAs cap layer at 590$^{\circ}C$. We prepared six 10-period-stacked QD samples with different InAs coverages and thicknesses of GaAs spacer layers. In the QD coverage below WL thickness (~1.7 ML), the majority of SQDs with no WL coexisted with a small amount of CQDs with a WL, and multi-peak spectra changed to a single peak profile. A transition from SQDs to CQDs was found before and after a WL formation, and the sublevel of SQDs peaking at (1.32${\pm}$0.1) eV was much closer to the GaAs bandedge than that of CQDs (~1.2 eV). These revealed that QDs with no WL could be formed by near-ML coverage in InAs/GaAs system, and single-mode SQDs could be achieved by 1.5 ML just below WL that a strain field was entirely uniform.

In this paper, we propose an improved anisotropic diffusion model for micro-crack detection in heterogeneously textured surface of polycrystalline solar wafers. Due to the nature of the image sensor, the gray-level of the diagonal micro-crack is non-uniform. Thus, the conventional algorithms can't fully detect diagonal micro-cracks when the number of iteration is not enough. However, the increasing of the iteration number leads to increase computation time and detects micro-crack thicker than the original micro-crack. In order to overcome this drawback, we use the gradient of north, south, east, and west directions as well as extended directions. To calculate the diffusion coefficients, we compare the gradients of conventional directions and extended directions and apply the larger gradient values to the coefficient function. This is because the proposed method reflects the information of diagonal micro-crack. Comparing to Tsai et al.'s and Ko and Rheem's, the proposed algorithm shows superior efficiency in detecting the diagonal micro-cracks with less iterations in the images of polycrystalline solar wafers. In addition, it also shows that the thickness of segmented micro-crack is similar to the orignal micro-crack.

A quaternary alloy film of $CoCr_{16.2}Pt_{10.8}Ta_4$was investigated for its magnetic properties and c-axis orientation with and without Ti underlayer. Additional elements such as Ta, Pt have been frequently introduced in CoCr alloy film for perpendicular recording as a means of improving magnetic performance. It has been reported that the addition of Pt and Ta in CoCr increase the coercivity and the magnetic isolation of columnar grains, respectively. However, CoCrPtTa perpendicular magnetic layer should be more increased its perpendicular magnetic anisotropy than at present for the application of ultrahigh recording density. The improvement of underlayers and substrate materials is one of the promised schemes to intensify the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In this study, the insertion of Ti underlayer shows the remarkable improvement of c-axis orientation compare with the direct deposition on the bare glass. The mechanism about this effect of Ti underlayer on CoCrPtTa is not to be clarified yet. Meanwhile, it is found that the magnetic domain of CoCrPtTa on 20 nm Ti underlayer has the continuous stripe pattern but the one of CoCrPtTa on 90 nm Ti underlayer shows the discrete mass type from the results of MFM investigation. This phenomenon is to be a distinct evidence that the improvement of perpendicular anisotropy by the adoption of Ti underlayer is originated from the reinforcement of the grain boundary segregation in CoCrPtTa alloy. Moreover, the transition of the M-H hysteresis pattern with the thickness of Ti underlayer indicates that the major contribution of Ti underlayer is not the magnetocrystalline anisotropy but the shape anisotropy due to the formation of uniform columnar grains by the nonmagnetic alloy segregation.

The preparation and characterization of new polymer composite membranes containing polyphenylene oxide (PPO) thin films with hetropoly acid (HPA) are presented. PPO thin films with phosphotungstic acid (PWA) or phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) have been prepared by using the solvent mixture. The PWA and PPO can be blended using the solvent mixture, because PPO and PWA are not soluble in the same solvent. In this study, methanol was used as a solvent dissolving PWA and chloroform was used as a solvent dissolving PPO. PPO-PWA solutions were cast onto a glass plate with uniform thickness. The composite membranes were prepared by casting Nafion mixture on porous PPO-PWA films. The morphology and structure of these PPO-PWA films were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The composite membranes were characterized by measuring their ion conductivity and methanol permeability. The performance was evaluated with composite membranes as electrolytes in fuel cell conditions. The methanol cross-over of composite membranes containing PPO-PWA barrier films in the DMFC reduced by 66%.
Pollen grains of 17 taxa (14 species with two additional subspecies and one variety) of genera Patrinia Juss. and Nardostachys DC. in tribe Patrinieae (Valerianaceae) were studied using light microscope, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope. Pollen grains are medium ($37.41{\times}43.60{\mu}m$ - $45.65{\times}48.50{\mu}m$) to large ($54.88{\times}59.41{\mu}m$ - $61.70{\times}71.00{\mu}m$) in size, tricolpate (rarely tetracolpate) with the characteristic halo surrounding the aperture. In equatorial view, the pollen is oblate to subprolate, and in polar view, it is mostly circular or rarely 3-lobed. Two major pollen types are recognized on the basis of exine sculpturing patterns; Type I: Exine is composed of echinae together with sparse or dense microechinae, and verrucae shallow or rarely absent (Nardostachys and sections Paleopatrinia, and Monanadropatrinia of Patirinia). - Type II: Exine is composed of massive echinae together with dense microechinae, and prominent verrucae (section Centrotrinia of Patrinia). In TEM sections, columellae are extended from the footlayer into verrucae, and exine thickness is uniform at the pole and equator. Additionally, the infrageneric classification systems of the Patrinieae were evaluated on the basis of the present data.
