  • The study suggests a method to analyze the vibration of the multi-stepped beam having the different circular cross-sections. The rotatory inertia, the shear deformation and the torque applied at both ends of the beam are considered in the governing equation. The complex displacement and the variable separation are introduced to derive the solution of the equation of each uniform beam element having constant cross-section. Then boundary conditions are applied to solve the total system. This method uses the mathematically exact solutions unlike numerical method such as the finite element method in solving the problem having the simultaneous differential equations of Timoshenko beam theory. the natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are precise, especially the mode shapes are continuous.

  • In this paper, the static behavior of bi-directional functionally graded (FG) non-uniform thickness circular plate resting on quadratically gradient elastic foundations (Winkler-Pasternak type) subjected to axisymmetric transverse and in-plane shear loads is carried out by using state-space and differential quadrature methods. The governing state equations are derived based on 3D theory of elasticity, and assuming the material properties of the plate except the Poisson's ratio varies continuously throughout the thickness and radius directions in accordance with the exponential and power law distributions. The stresses and displacements distribution are obtained by solving state equations. The effects of foundation stiffnesses, material heterogeneity indices, geometric parameters and loads ratio on the deformation and stress distributions of the FG circular plate are investigated in numerical examples. The results are reported for the first time and the new results can be used as a benchmark solution for future researches.

  • This paper studies the dynamic instability of laminated composite plates under thermal and arbitrary in-plane periodic loads using first-order shear deformation plate theory. The governing partial differential equations of motion are established by a perturbation technique. Then, the Galerkin method is applied to reduce the partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations. Based on Bolotin's method, the system equations of Mathieu-type are formulated and used to determine dynamic instability regions of laminated plates in the thermal environment. The effects of temperature, layer number, modulus ratio and load parameters on the dynamic instability of laminated plates are investigated. The results reveal that static and dynamic load, layer number, modulus ratio and uniform temperature rise have a significant influence on the thermal dynamic behavior of laminated plates.

  • This paper deals with multiobjective optimization of symmetrically laminated composite truncated circular conical shells subjected to external uniform pressure load and thermal load. The design objective is the maximization of the weighted sum of the critical buckling load and fundamental frequency. The design variable is the fibre orientations in the layers. The performance index is formulated as the weighted sum of individual objectives in order to obtain optimal solutions of the design problem. The first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used in the mathematical formulation of laminated truncated conical shells. Finally, the effect of different weighting factors, length-to-radius ratio, semi-cone angle and boundary conditions on the optimal design is investigated and the results are compared.

  • In this paper, free vibration, forced vibration, resonance and stress wave propagation behavior in nanocomposite plates reinforced by wavy carbon nanotube (CNT) are studied by a mesh-free method based on first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The plates are resting on Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation and subjected to periodic or impact loading. The distributions of CNTs are considered functionally graded (FG) or uniform along the thickness and their mechanical properties are estimated by an extended rule of mixture. In the mesh-free analysis, moving least squares (MLS) shape functions are used for approximation of displacement field in the weak form of motion equation and the transformation method is used for imposition of essential boundary conditions. Effects of CNT distribution, volume fraction, aspect ratio and waviness, and also effects of elastic foundation coefficients, plate thickness and time depended loading are examined on the vibrational and stresses wave propagation responses of the nanocomposite plates reinforced by wavy CNT.

  • A thermal postbuckling analysis is presented for a moderately thick rectangular plate subjected to uniform or nonuniform tent-like temperature loading and resting on an elastic foundation. The plate is assumed to be simply supported on its two opposite edges and the two side edges remain free. The initial geometrical imperfection of the plate is taken into account. The formulation are based on the Reissner-Mindlin plate theory considering the first order shear deformation effect, and including plate-foundation interaction and thermal effects. The analysis uses a mixed Galerkin-perturbation technique to determine the thermal buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. Numerical examples are presented that relate to the performances of perfect and imperfect, moderately thick plates resting on Pasternak-type or softening nonlinear elastic foundations from which results for Winker elastic foundations follow as a limiting case. Typical results are presented in dimensionless graphical form.

  • A postbuckling analysis is presented for a simply supported, moderately thick rectangular plate subjected to combined axial compression and uniform temperature loading and resting on a two-parameter elastic foundation. The two cases of thermal postbuckling of initially compressed plates and of compressive postbuckling of initially heated plates are considered. The initial geometrical imperfection of the plate is taken into account. The formulations are based on the Reissner-Mindlin plate theory considering the first order shear deformation effect, and including the plate-foundation interaction and thermal effect. The analysis uses a deflection-type perturbation technique to determine the buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. Numerical examples cover the performances of perfect and imperfect, moderately thick plates resting on Winkler or Pasternak-type elastic foundations. Typical results are presented in dimensionless graphical form.

  • In this paper, the vibration of a rotating shaft with a thin rigid disk is considered. It is assumed that the shaft has uniform, circular cross-section. Based on the Timoshenko-beam theory, the transverse displacements and slops in two lateral directions, the axial displacement, and the torsional deformation are considered. A spectral element model is developed by using the variation method for the vibration analysis of the rotating shaft with a thin rigid disk, which is modeled by two shaft elements and a thin rigid disk element. The result of vibration analysis by finite element method is compared to the result of this research.

  • The free vibration characteristics of cylindrical shells on inclined partial elastic foundations are investigated by an analytical method. The cylindrical shell is partially surrounded by the elastic foundations, these are represented by the Winkler or Pasternak model. The area of elastic foundation is not uniform and varies along the axial direction of the shell. The motion of shell is represented by first-order shear deformation theory(FSDT) to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains. The governing equation is obtained using the Rayleigh-Ritz method and a variation approach. To validate the present method, the numerical example is presented and compared with the present FEA results. The numerical results reveal that the elastic foundation has significant effect on vibration characteristics.
