Measurements of bubble size and distribution in the surface layer of the sea, wind speed, and variation of ocean environments were made continually over a four-day period in an experiment conducted in the South Sea of Korea during 17-20 September 2007. Theoretical background of bubble population model indicates that bubble population is a function of the depth, range and wind speed and bubble effects on sound speed shows that sound speed varies with frequency. Observational evidence exhibited that the middle size bubble population fit the model very well, however, smaller ones can not follow the model probably due to their short lifetime. Meanwhile, there is also a hysteresis effect of void fraction. Observational evidence also indicates that strong changes in sound speed are produced by the presence of swarms of micro bubbles especially from 7 kHz to 50 kHz, and calculation results are consistent with the measured data in the high frequency band, but inconsistent in the low frequency band. Based on the measurements of the sound speed and high frequency transmission configuration in the bubble layer, we present an estimation of underwater acoustic channel capacity in the bubble layer.
A time-series variation of temperature, salinity, and underwater sound speed was analyzed using an Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography (ARGO) float which autonomously collects temperature and salinity for about 10month with 2 days cycle among 12 floats in the center of the Yellow Sea. As a result, the underwater sound channel appeared below the thermocline as the surface sound channel, which is dominant in the winter season, reduced in April. Besides, for a certain time in the spring season, the sound ray reflected the sea surface frequently due to the short-term temperature inversion effect. Based on the case of successful observation of ARGO float in the shallow water, using prolonged monitoring unmanned platform may contribute to predicting sound transmission loss if the temperature inversion and sound channel including background environment focusing are investigated in the center of the Yellow Sea.
Underwater acoustic channel impulse responses (CIR) are influenced by sound speed profile (SSP), and the variation of CIR has significant effects on the performance of underwater acoustic communication systems. A significant change of SSP can occur within a short period, which must be considered during the design of underwater acoustic modems. This paper statistically analyzes the effect of the variation of SSP on the long-range acoustic signal propagation in shallow-water with thermocline using numerical modeling based on the data acquired from JACE13 experiment near Jeju island. The analysis result shows that CIR changes variously according to the SSP and the depth of the transmitter and receiver. We also found that when the transmitter and receiver are deeper, the variation of sound wave propagation pattern is smaller and signal level becomes higher. All CIR obtained in this study show that a series of bottom reflections due to downward refraction and small bottom loss in the shallow water with thermocline can be very important factor for long-range signal transmission and the performance of underwater acoustic communication system in time varying ocean environment can be very sensitive to the variation of SSP even for a short period of time.
A passive time-reversal technique can improve error performance of the underwater communication system by reducing influence of inter-symbol interferences, which is caused by a multipath channel response. The passive time-reversal communication system equipped with numerous receivers generally can obtain superior error performance since larger diversity gain can be obtained as the number of available received signal increased. In this paper, we analyze the optimal number and combination of receivers that can approximately achieve the best error performance when using the limited number of receivers. For this analysis, we use communication data collected during SAVEX15 (Shallow-water Acoustic Variability Experiment 2015) carried out in the south-western part of Jeju Island from May 14 to May 28, 2015. Analysis results show that there are depths of energy concentration due to the channel characteristics in which the underwater sound channel are present, and the passive time-reversal technique using the limited number of the receivers can derive near-optimal communication performance if the receivers for time-reversal processing are located at the depths where energy is concentrated.

In this paper, the performance of the selective combining according to the channel selection decision method of frequency diversity is evaluated in the underwater frequency selective channel. The underwater acoustic channel in the shallow sea has a complex multipath characteristic by combining various environmental factors such as boundary surface reflection and sound wave refraction according to the water temperature layer. In particular, frequency selectivity due to multipath causes energy fluctuation in a communication channel, which reduces SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) and deteriorates communication performance. In this paper, we applied the frequency diversity technique using multiple channels to secure the communication performance according to the frequency selectivity by multipath. For each channel, 4-FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) and selective combining were applied, the performance was evaluated by applying the maximum value, average value, and majority decision of the signal in order to decide the demodulation channel selection of the selective combining.
The salinity of sea water is known as a less influencing variable in the calculation of the sound speed of the sea water. This study investigated how the low salinity of sea water affects the vertical structure of the sound speed near the mouth of the Yangtze (Changjiang) River when the diluted fresh water extends toward the East China Sea in the summer. As a result of comparing two types of sound speeds considered measured and fixed salinity, sound speeds appeared distinguishable when the halocline formed steeper than the thermocline due to Yangtze-River Diluted Water (YRDW). In addition, unlikely with fixed salinity conditions, when measured salinity was considered, an underwater sound channel appeared in the middle of the thermocline of which the source depth is located. Accordingly, considering the salinity, this study suggests using Expendable Conductivity Temperature Depth (XCTD) and Expendable Sound Velocimeter (XSV) rather than Expandable Bathy Thermograph (XBT) when calculating sound speed because of the strong halocline due to YRDW in the summer.

Transmission characteristics of the sound propagation is very complicate and sparse in shallow water. To increase the performance of underwater acoustic communication system, lots of channel estimation technique has been proposed. In this paper, we proposed the channel estimation based on LMS(Least Mean Square) algorithm which has faster convergence speed than conventional sparse-aware LMS algorithms. The proposed method combines $L_p$-norm LMS with soft decision process. Simulation was performed by using the sound velocity profile which acquired in real sea trial. As a result, we confirmed that the proposed method shows the improved performance and faster convergence speed than conventional methods.

The authors carried out a field experiment to confirm the effect of underwater sound on the luring of fish schools in a setnet in the coast of Cheju Island. The effects of the acoustic emission on the luring of fish schools were observed using a manufectured underwater speaker in the setnet, and pure sound, of which frequency was 600Hz and the source level was 126dB, was emitted on and off at 5 minutes intervals in the set net during the night of ,July 29 and ,July 31. So we had recorded behavior of fish schools by the telesounder with two channel and shape of the setnet by underwater video camera and analyzed them. When the flood and ebb currents were around the setnet, the nets rised to the surface of water and it happened occasionaly at the stand of tide. Therefore, it was in the state that fish schools feel constraint to enter into the setnet, and was required a new design of the setnet stand up to strong tidal current. As the pure sound, of which frequency was 600Hz was emitted for the luring of fish schools in a setnet, the catch ammounts of fish, the young horce mackereWI'rachllrlls japonicus), was increased 4~6 times than not emitted.

It is well known that fish hear a wide frequency range of sound using both laterial line and inner ear, and the sound is probably the most effective channel for long-range communication underwater than any other stimulus. The auditory threshold of svenband grouper, Epinephelus septem fasciatus was determined by conditioning method using a sound coupled with electric shock in a tank. The audio-signals and electric shock used in the experiment were pure tones of 100 to 1000Hz and DC 6n.The response of fish to the sound was observed by ECG intervals from precordial leads method (V1·V2 method). The auditory threshold curve for sevenband grouper was V-shaped, with most sensitive threshold at 350Hz in the range of 100~1000Hz. The Sevenband grouper were more sensitive to sounds of 200~400Hz than to adjacent frequencies.

In ocean environment, the sound speed gradient of seawater has an important influence on far field sound propagation. The FEM/BEM is used to decouple the vibroacoustic radiation of the spherical shell, and the Green function of the virtual source chain is adopted for decoupling. For far field radiated Sound Pressure Level (SPL), the Beam Displacement Ray normal Mode (BDRM) is employed. The vibration and near-/far-field radiated SPL of spherical shell is analyzed in shallow sea uniform layer, negative/positive gradient, negative thermocline environment, and deep-sea sound channel. Results show that the vibroacoustic radiation of spherical shell acted at 300Hz can be analogous to dipole. When the radiated field of the spherical shell is dominated by large-grazing-angle waves, it can be analogous to vertically distributed dipole, and the far field radiated SPL is lower; while similar to horizontally distributed dipole if dominated by small-grazing-angle waves, and the far field SPL is high.
