Visibility in underwater images is usually poor because of the attenuation of light in the water that causes low contrast and color variation. In this paper, a new approach for underwater image quality improvement is presented. The proposed method aims to improve underwater image contrast, increase image details, and reduce noise by applying a new method of using contrast stretching to produce two different images with different contrasts. The proposed method integrates the modification of the image histogram in two main color models, RGB and HSV. The histograms of the color channel in the RGB color model are modified and remapped to follow the Rayleigh distribution within certain ranges. The image is then converted to the HSV color model, and the S and V components are modified within a certain limit. Qualitative and quantitative analyses indicate that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods in terms of contrast, details, and noise reduction. The image color also shows much improvement.

The underwater noise was measured by piezo-electric hydrophones submerged in the water at three different depths. The signals were led through connection cables to preamplifiers, and recorded simultaneously by a four channel tape recorder, and analysed by high resolution signal analyzer. The measurements were carried out at the fjord Skossvassen in archipelago off Bergen and at the cost of Norway in the North Sea. The results of the measurements and the analysis showed that the underwater noise consists of a steady broad band noise superposed by intermittent pulse of various strength. The noise levels measured in fjord Skossvassen indicated that they were generally higher at the shallow (10m) hydrophone than at the deeper hydrophone (25m, 50m). This tendency was not very distinct, however, the noise sources are close to the surface. The underwater noise spectrums measured in the open sea of Norway showed almost similar situation in all layers. This tendency showed that the noise sources are not close to the surface but they are far away from the measuring positions.

A scientific and objective sound exposure criterion for underwater sound damage on fish has been required since there has been many disputes between an underwater sound maker and a fish damage receiver. The existing criteria are still incomplete scientifically owing to a degree of variability of underwater sounds, diversity of fish hearing sensitivity and damage types, etc. This study reviews existing studies on a hearing mechanism of fish species, manmade underwater sound characteristics and sound exposure assessment parameters, and recent sound exposure criteria. A governing equation for damage coverage estimation and damage coverage dependency on sound source level, ambient noise and transmission loss are also reviewed and interpreted based on sound exposure environments. The foreign and Korean (National Environmental Dispute Medication Commission) criteria are reviewed and compared based on scientific aspects. In addition, the deficit and limit of Korean criteria are presented. The objective of this study is to give a direction for related researches and legislation of sound exposure criteria on fish.

Underwater images carry information that is useful in the fields of aquaculture, underwater military security, navigation, transportation, and so on. In this research, we transmitted an underwater image through various underwater mediums in the presence of underwater turbulence and beam attenuation effects using a high-speed visible optical carrier signal. The optical beam undergoes scintillation because of the turbulence and attenuation effects; therefore, distorted images were observed at the receiver end. To understand the behavior of the communication media, we obtained the bit error rate (BER) performance of the system with respect to the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Also, the structural similarity index (SSI) and peak SNR (PSNR) metrics of the received image were evaluated. Based on the received images, we employed suitable nonlinear filters to recover the distorted images and enhance them further. The BER, SSI, and PSNR metrics of the specific nonlinear filters were also evaluated and compared with the unfiltered metrics. These metrics were evaluated using the on-off keying and binary phase-shift keying modulation techniques for the 50-m and 100-m links for beam attenuation resulting from pure seawater, clear ocean water, and coastal ocean water mediums.

Underwater sound speed is an important analysis parameter on an estimation of the underwater radiated noise (URN) emitted from vessels. This paper aims to present an underwater sound speed measurement procedure using a cross-correlation of time-domain acoustic signals and validate the procedure through an experiment in a reverberant water tank. For the purpose, time-domain acoustic signals transmitted by a Gaussian pulse excitation from an acoustic projector have been measured at 20 hydrophone positions in the reverberant water tank. Then, the sound speed in water has been calculated by a linear regression using 190 cross-correlation cases of distances and time lags between the received signals and the result has been compared with those estimated by the existing empirical formulae. From the result, it is regarded that the presented experimental procedure to measure an underwater sound speed is reliably applicable if the time resolution is sufficiently high in the measurement.

In this paper, we introduce the measurement of the underwater noise with 32channel hydrophone array of Samsung CAvitation Tunnel (SCAT) and the detection technique of noise sources by using the beam-forming method. Measurement and way signal Processing under fluid flow are essential works for the underwater acoustics, especially for the detection of noise sources. As the acoustic impedance of the water is relatively high and the tunnel is an enclosed system, we have to consider the interaction between tunnel and water together with the reflection of noise in the beam-forming technique. Also, for a hydrophone array system that is fixed on one side of tunnel wall as done in SCAT is liable to suffer from some limitations in the detection of the noise sources with the array, we discuss these limitations particularly on the frequency range and spacing of noise sources.

The cavitating noise of underwater propeller is considered numerically in this study. The main purpose of this research is to analyze these noise sources from marine propeller. The approach for investigation is a potential based panel method coupled with acoustic analogy. To predict propeller sheet cavitation noise, the blade surface cavity is considered as a single valued pulsating volume of vapor attached to the blade surface. The time dependent cavity volume data are used for noise prediction. Furthermore, we analyze hydrofoil cavitation bubble behavior and noise using Eulerian/Lagrangian approach. Through this study, we can analyze dominant noise source of marine propeller and provide a basis for proper noise control strategies.

This paper has considered the location estimation problem in two dimension space by using a non-linear filter under non-Gaussian noise in underwater acoustic sensor networks(UASNs). Recently, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is widely used in location estimation. However, the EKF has a lot of problems in the non-linear system under the non-gaussian noise environment like underwater environment. In this paper, we propose the improved Two-Dimension Particle Filter (TDPF) using the re-interpretation distribution techniques based on the maximum likelihood (ML). Through the simulation, we compared and analyzed the proposed TDPF with the EKF under the non-Gaussian underwater sensor networks. Finally, we determined that the TDPF's result shows more accurate localization than EKF's result.

In this paper, a Bayesian classifier based on PCA (principle component analysis) is proposed to classify underwater transient signals using $16^{th}$ order LPC (linear predictive coding) coefficients as feature vector. The proposed classifier is composed of two steps. The mechanical signals were separated from biological signals in the first step, and then each type of the mechanical signal was recognized in the second step. Three biological transient signals and two mechanical signals were used to conduct experiments. The classification ratios for the feature vectors of biological signals and mechanical signals were 94.75% and 97.23%, respectively, when all 16 order LPC vector were used. In order to determine the effect of underwater noise on the classification performance, underwater ambient noise was added to the test signals and the classification ratio according to SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) was compared by changing dimension of feature vector using PCA. The classification ratios of the biological and mechanical signals under ocean ambient noise at 10dB SNR, were 0.51% and 100% respectively. However, the ratios were changed to 53.07% and 83.14% when the dimension of feature vector was converted to three by applying PCA. For correct, classification, it is required SNR over 10 dB for three dimension feature vector and over 30dB SNR for seven dimension feature vector under ocean ambient noise environment.
