  • In underwater wireless communication, needs for long distance communication using the high frequency are surpassing ones of short range communication by ultrasonic wave, and demands for transmitting and receiving various data such as voice or high resolution image data are increasing as well. In this work, we studied the effects on the real underwater communication depending on the difference of digital modulation methods. Simulation shows that only the performance of GMSK among many other PSK based modulation schemes(BPSK, QPSK, MSK, GMSK) is significant. Test condition simulates the oceanographic conditions along the 207-survey line, 15Km south of Busan and SNR is maintained 35dB or below. Simulated tests are composed of both transmitting image data(3×105 pixel, 4 bit per pixel) and voice communication(102BER, channel capacity of 1Kbps). Test results show that there are gain of about 7 seconds in transmission time in image transmission case, where channel capacity for BPSK, QPSK, and MSK and for GMSK were 65 Kbps and 45 Kbps, respectively and gain of about 8Km in distances in voice communication case.

  • Recently, the need for various underwater application systems targeting efficient resource exploration and aquatic ecosystem monitoring is rapidly increasing in littoral sea and inland waters. In this paper, we focus on the research and development of digital module of acoustic micro modem which can be used for underwater mobile communication systems and underwater sensor network systems. Specifically, a digital module of acoustic modem embedding digital signal processor is designed and implemented. On top of the developed hardware platform, physical layer frame generation and recovery and channel coding algorithms are mounted and tested in a water tank and a pond to verify its functionality and performance. According to experimental results, less than 1 percent of total computational power is consumed in the processing of frame control and convolutional code with the data rate of 1 kbps. Thus, the performance of micro modem could be improved by loading efficient baseband algorithms into the processor while maintaining the implemented hardware.

  • In this paper we applied a transmit beamforming technique to the underwater acoustic communication system for high rate data transmission. A prototype transmit system was designed and implemented with the general purpose DSP processor and multiple digital-to-analog converters. The performances of the implemented system were evaluated by the experiment in water tank. In order to simplify the procedure the channel coding and equalizer were omitted. And the simplest OOK (On-Off Keying) technique in digital communication methods was applied. The experimental result shows that the transmission data rate is higher about 3 times in the case of 5 hydrophone transmitting may than 1 hydrophone transmitter at bit error rate 10/sup -2/. We verified that the maximum data rate was 400 bps for speech signal transmission in water tank.

  • In this paper, we present surface-to-underwater visible light communication systems using white LEDs. Pulse position modulation (PPM)-based analogue data communications and on-off keying-based digital data communications systems are developed. Inexpensive and commercial power-LEDs and photo-diodes are used to construct two types of systems. We report the experimental results obtained from the prototype systems to show the possibility of an optical underwater visible light transceiver as a basis for short range underwater wireless network. Their performance deteriorates more than the atmosphere's one because of attenuation and scattering of the light in water, but these results are promising for the potential to create more robust network interface that improve medium performance such as a LED modulation and a photo-detector demodulation.

  • For effective underwater digital communications, a frame structure is used, which includes pilots in time and frequency domains for channel estimation at a receiver. To estimate channel precisely, the each pilot should be located less than coherence time and coherence bandwidth. This paper measured underwater communication environments to provide coherence time and coherence bandwidth. Based on the measurement, the paper exhibits the calculated coherence time and coherent bandwidth is adequate by computer simulations.

  • Recently, due to the increasing interests in deep sea development, all possible efforts to the development of underwater unmanned working vehicles such as AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) or underwater robot are exerted. This paper proposes a new efficient acoustic-based underwater image data communication system, which ensures a certain level of maximum throughput regardless of the propagation delay of ultrasonic and allowsfast data transmission through the multiple ultrasonic communication channel. Proposed system consists of an acoustic transducer which operates at 136kHz center frequency and it's 10kHz bandwidth, pre-amplifier, π/4QPSK(Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) modulation/demodu-lation method, image compressing method using JPEG technique and modified Stop & Wait protocol. The experimental result of the system make it possible to transfer the underwater image as a high throughput at the basin test. The results of test are also verified which allows to desirable transmission performance compared with the existing developed system and the possibility to put the practical use of survey and investigation in the water.

  • This paper deals with the design techniques for underwater acoustic basin. An underwater acoustic basin is needed for test and calibration of acoustic sensors, acoustic digital communication system, acoustic measurement system, and underwater image data telemetry system. KRISO(Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering) have planned the construction of an underwater acoustic tank from 1999 to 2001 through internal project. We studied about absorbtion characteristics of a porous re-cycled rubber which is selected as a absorption materials and designed absorption plate with wedge shape. The simulation of reflection analysis along the wedge angle for wedged type plate was presented.

  • Wireless communication systems are inevitable for efficient underwater activities. Because of the poor propagation characteristics of light and electromagnetic waves, acoustic waves are generally used for the underwater wireless communication. Although there are many kinds of information type, visual images take an essential role especially for search and identification activities. For this reason, we developed an acoustic-based underwater image transmission system under a dual use technology project supported by MOCIE (Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy). For the application to complicated and time-varying underwater environments all-digital transmitter and receiver systems are investigated. Array acoustic transducers are used at the receiver, which have the center frequency of 32kHz and the bandwidth of 4kHz. To improve transmission speed and quality, various algorithms and systems are used. The system design techniques will be discussed in detail including image compression/ decompression system, adaptive beam- forming, fast RLS adaptive equalizer, /4 QPSK (Quadrilateral Phase Shift Keying) modulator/demodulator, and convolution coding/ Viterbi. Decoding.

  • In this paper, we propose an excellent ultrasonic transceiver system based on a QPSK modulation technique for underwater communication. The transmitter sends a still image at the level of 187dB re 1μPa/V@1m through a power amplifier by driving an ultrasonic sensor. The receiver performs digital conversion at the 100kHz sampling frequency, demodulation and decoding process for the image sent from the transmitter through the underwater communication. We have shown that the processed image at the receiver is almost the same as the orignal one. The maximum detection distance of the system proposed in this paper is approximately 1.17km. To cope with the difficulties of transmission loss, this paper proposes, implements and analyzes important parameters of sensors and circuits used in the system. Most of the underwater communication has focused on the transmission of audio signal, but this paper suggests an efficient underwater communication system for still image transmission.

  • The performance of a digital baseband signal processing and data transmission rate depends on the modulation technique. In this paper, We implemented DSP communication system for Underwater acoustic communication using by adaptive BPSK modem technique. In order to implement adaptive modem, we suggested SNR detection block. SNR detection block has the reference SNR value that selects between window filter path and matched filter path. In this paper, suggested system is based on software interface and all Hardware(PLL, modem filter, equalizer etc) is implemented by software, exclusive of DSP, A/D, D/A converter, SDRAM and Flash memory.
