  • Underwater communication is difficult to increase the communication capacity because the carrier frequency is lower than that of radio communications on land. This is limited to the bandwidth of the signal under the influence of the characteristics of an ocean medium. As the high transmission speed and large transmission capacity have become necessary in the limited frequency range, the studies on MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) communication have been actively carried out. The performance of the MIMO communication is lower than that of the SIMO (Single Input Multiple Output) communication because cross-talk occurs due to multiusers along with inter symbol interference resulting from the channel characteristics such as delay spread and doppler spread. Although the adaptive equalizer considering multi-channels is used to mitigate the influence of the cross-talk, the algorithm is normally complicated. In this paper, time reversal mirror technique with the characteristic of a self-equalization will be applied to simplify the compensation algorithm and relieve the cross-talk in order to improve the communication performance when the signal transmitted from two channels is received over interference on one channel in the same time. In addition, the performance of the MIMO communication based on the time reversal mirror is verified using data from the SAVEX15(Shallow-water Acoustic Variability Experiment 2015) conducted at the northern area of East China Sea in May 2015.

  • In this paper, we present performance analysis results of parametric array communication system in terms of theoretical BER and channel capacity of MIMO in underwater AWGN channel by using simplified SNR of difference frequency. The SNR of the difference frequency is calculated by using transmission loss, noise level, and source level of difference frequency in which nonlinear effect is considered. By assuming primary frequencies as 210 kHz and 190 kHz, difference frequency as 20 kHz, transducer diameter as 0.1 m, and noise level as 50 dB and the requested BER as $10^{-4}$, we obtain parametric array communication range gains over the communication system using primary frequency of 59.11 km in fresh water and 5 km in sea water, respectively. Also we obtain range gains of 38.84 km and 46.38 km in fresh water, and 3.88 km and 4.38 km in sea water when we use SISO and $2{\times}2$ MIMO parametric array communications for the channel capacity of 10 bps/Hz.

  • Underwater sensor networks (UWSNs) employ acoustic channels for communications. One of the main characteristics of the underwater acoustic channel is long propagation delay. Previously proposed MAC (medium access control) protocols for wireless sensor networks cannot be directly used in UWSNs due to the long propagation delay. The long propagation delay and uneven nodes deployments cause spatial fairness in UWSNs. Therefore, a new MAC protocol for UWSNs needs to be developed to provide efficient communications. In this paper, we propose an efficient MAC protocol in order to alleviate the fairness problem. In the proposed scheme, when a node receives a RTS packet, it does not immediately send back but delays a CTS packet. The node collects several RTS packets from source nodes during the delay time. It chooses one of the RTS packets based on the queue status information. And then, it sends a CTS packet to the source node which sent the chosen RTS packet. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated via simulation. Simulation results show that our scheme is effective and alleviates the fairness problem.

  • The sonic layer depth (SLD) variability is important for understanding the acoustic properties of the upper ocean that influence acoustic communications, acoustic tomography, and naval operations related to searching and detecting marine underwater vessels. Generally, the SLD is the acoustical equivalent of the mixed layer depth (MLD), although they are defined differently. In this study the SLD was compared with the MLD over the annual cycle in the East Sea using an available set of temperature-salinity observation profiles. For the comparison, various definitions and methods of the MLD had applied. As a result, the SLD in the East Sea is slight similar to the curvature method applied MLD, but the other MLD have severe differences with the SLD. Futhermore, a parabolic equation transmission model is used to evaluate the cutoff frequency trapped in surface duct. It follow that there is an optimum frequency for propagation at which the loss of sound is minimum.

  • Studies applying multiple carrier method such as OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) or FMT(Filtered Multi-Tone) to Underwater acoustic communication(UAC) system are actively under way as UAC is utilized in the various fields and the demand of high speed data transmission increases. In the existing OFDM method, the use of virtual carrier, which is inserted not to affect the adjacent channel in the frequency domain, and the cyclic prefix, which is used to reduce the impact of Inter Symbol Interference and Inter Channel Interference, decrease the throughput. In particular, the length of cyclic prefix to be used becomes longer under water since underwater has a rapidly changing channel characteristic, and the data throughput diminishes because it has to allocate more subcarrier on virtual carrier. This study therefore suggests FMT-OFDM system, a combination of OFDM and FMT, for the purpose of enhanced throughput in the underwater channel environment. Besides, in this study, channel is modeled based on data measured in real sea and the performance is analyzed after setting system parameters.

  • This paper proposed an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based biomimetic communication method using a dolphin whistle which covertly transmits communication signals to allies. The proposed method divides the dolphin whistle into several time slots corresponding to a number of OFDM symbols, and modulates the communication signal by mapping differential phase shift keying (DPSK) symbols into subcarriers that have the frequency bands of the dolphin whistle in each slot. The advantages of the proposed method are as follows: In the conventional Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) and Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) based biomimetic communication methods, the discontinuity of the frequency contour is large, but the proposed method can reduce the discontinuity. Even if the modulation order is increased, the degradation of the mimicking performance is small. The computer simulations demonstrate that the Bit Error Rate (BER) and mimicking performance of the proposed method are better performance than those of the conventional CSS and FSK.

  • In this paper, we present bit error rate(BER) performance of an adaptive decision feedback equalizer(DFE) with experimental data. The experiment was performed at the shore of Geoje in November 2007. The BER performance of the adaptive DFE whose tap weight is updated by RLS is described with change of feedforward tap number, feedback tap number, traning seqence length and delay, which shows that the uncoded average BER is $4{\times}10^{-2}\;and\;1.5{\times}10^{-2}$ with transmission range 9.7km and 4km, respectively.

  • Beamforming for underwater acoustic communication (UAC) is affected by the broadband feature of UAC signal, which has relatively low currier frequency as compared to the signal bandwidth. The narrow-band assumption does not hold good in UAC. In this paper, we discuss a broadband FIR beamformer for UAC using the baseband equivalent way signal model. We consider the broadband FIR beamformer for QPSK UAC with carrier frequency 25kHz and symbol rate 5kHz. Array geometry is a uniform linear way with 8 omni-directional elements and sensor spacing is the half of the carrier wavelength. The simulation results show that the broadband n beamformer achieves nearly optimum signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) and outperforms the conventional narrowband beamformer by SINR 0.5dB when two-tap FIR filter is employed at each sensor and the inter-tap delay is a quarter of the symbol interval. The broadband FIR beamformer performance is more degraded as the FIR filter length is increased above a certain value. If the inter-tap delay is not greater than half of the symbol period, SINR performance does not depend on the inter-tap delay. More training period is required when the inter-tap delay is same as the symbol period.
