  • In these days, there are huge increases of concerning underwater acoustic sensor networks (UWASNs) to explore marine resources and to monitor climate change. To collect information from sensor nodes which are randomly deployed in underwater, Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) based locating methods have been recently introduced, which consider sound speed to be constant in underwater. However, underwater sound speed tends to vary depending on underwater environment factors, such as depth, temperature, and salinity. In this paper, we propose a method considering environment factors, can influence upon sound speed in underwater, and introduce experimental setup which can follow up environmental factors.

  • Underwater acoustics, which is the domain that addresses phenomena related to the generation, propagation, and reception of sound waves in water, has been applied mainly in the research on the use of sound navigation and ranging (SONAR) systems for underwater communication, target detection, investigation of marine resources and environment mapping, and measurement and analysis of sound sources in water. The main objective of remote sensing based on underwater acoustics is to indirectly acquire information on underwater targets of interest using acoustic data. Meanwhile, highly advanced data-driven machine-learning techniques are being used in various ways in the processes of acquiring information from acoustic data. The related theoretical background is introduced in the first part of this paper (Yang et al., 2020). This paper reviews machine-learning applications in passive SONAR signal-processing tasks including target detection/identification and localization.

  • In measurements of the vibration of structures underwater with a laser Doppler vibrometer, the surface vibration is measured by means of detecting the phase change of the laser beam due to the structural vibration. The laser beam passes through the sound field radiated from the vibrating structures underwater. It experiences an additional phase change due to the change in refractive index in the radiated sound field. This phase change due to the sound field may cause the error in surface vibration measurements. In this paper, this phase change due to the radiated sound filed has been analyzed. The numerical simulation has been peformed to evaluate the phase change in sound field radiated from an infinite cylindrical structure vibrating underwater.

  • Measurements of bubble size and distribution in the surface layer of the sea, wind speed, and variation of ocean environments were made continually over a four-day period in an experiment conducted in the South Sea of Korea during 17-20 September 2007. Theoretical background of bubble population model indicates that bubble population is a function of the depth, range and wind speed and bubble effects on sound speed shows that sound speed varies with frequency. Observational evidence exhibited that the middle size bubble population fit the model very well, however, smaller ones can not follow the model probably due to their short lifetime. Meanwhile, there is also a hysteresis effect of void fraction. Observational evidence also indicates that strong changes in sound speed are produced by the presence of swarms of micro bubbles especially from 7 kHz to 50 kHz, and calculation results are consistent with the measured data in the high frequency band, but inconsistent in the low frequency band. Based on the measurements of the sound speed and high frequency transmission configuration in the bubble layer, we present an estimation of underwater acoustic channel capacity in the bubble layer.

  • The acoustic power is a major acoustical characteristic of an underwater vehicle and could be measured in a reverberant water tank. In order to obtain accurate measurement results, the acoustic field formed by the sound source should be investigated quantitatively in the reverberant water tank. In this research, the acoustic field of a reverberant water tank containing an underwater sound source has been analyzed by using an acoustic radiosity method one of the numerical analysis methods suitable for the acoustic analysis of the highly diffused space. The source level of the underwater sound source and acoustical properties of the water tank input to the numerical analysis have been estimated by applying the reverberant tank plot method through a preliminary experiment result. The comparison of the numerical analysis result with that of the experiment has verified the accuracy of the acoustic radiosity method.

  • As the quality of life is being upgraded, the public complaints about noise and vibration from construction sites are growing. Despite the disputes over the blasting damage on aquatic lives in river, ocean, and aquarium near construction sites tend to increase, most of existing solutions or regulations on the damages caused by blasting are established for the damages on land. Although the estimated amount of damage is up to several millions of USD, there is no guideline for resolving the dispute related to the underwater vibration. This paper presents an example where the public grievance about the underwater noise was successfully resolved by elucidating the characteristics of underwater sound, deducing the correlations between ground vibration and underwater sound during blast, and predicting the underwater sound level during blasting from the ground vibration measured on the ground near an aquarium basin.

  • This paper describes the experimental study for the position estimation method of underwater sound source using the Nearfield Acoustic Holography. The result confirms that it can be used in the identification of underwater noise sources. The sound sources in the experimental work consists of 2 spherical projectors and the near-Held sound pressure is measured in the hologram plane. From the cross-power spectra of the measured data, the complex sound pressures on the hologram plane is derived and its spatial transformation gives sound fields in a source region. The obtained sound fields in a source region showed that the position of each sound source and their relative source strength are exactly estimated. In conclusion, this technique can be applied for estimation of each source position and its relative strength contribution for the underwater multiple sound sources.
