The impact of sound speed variability in the sea is the very important on acoustic propagation for the underwater acoustic systems. Understanding of the temporal and spatial variability of ocean sound speed in the sea around the Ieodo were obtained using oceanographic data (temperature, salinity). from the Korea Oceanographic Data Center, collected by season for 17 years. The vertical distributions of sound speed are mainly related to seasonal variations and various current such as Chinese coastal water, Yellow Sea Cold Water (YSCW), Kuroshio source water. The standard deviations show that great variations of sound speed exist in the upper layer and observation station between 16 and 18. In order to quantitatively explain the reason for sound speed variations, Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis was performed on sound speed data at the Line 316 covering 68 cruises between 2002 and 2018. Three main modes of EOFs respectively revealed 55, 29, and 5% the total variance of sound speed. The first mode of the EOFs was associated with influence of surface heating. The second EOFs pattern shows that contributions of YSCW and surface heating. The first and second modes had seasonal and inter-annul variations.

This paper proposes a robust localization algorithm and optimal number of receivers considering the detection range of underwater targets. The accuracies of the source position, receiver position and sound velocity are improved using the known positions of underwater objects. The accuracies of these parameters influences the performance of the target localization error. Although the source and receiver positions are obtained by the global positioning system (GPS), there are still positional errors due to GPS and variations in sea temperature. First, the influence of those errors are analyzed mathematically and an algorithm is improved to improve the accuracies of source position, receiver position and sound velocity by using geographic points. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated in comparison with the conventional algorithm by computer simulations.

The underwater acoustic communication has been widely applied to various objects such as ocean exploration-development and military affairs. And recently for embodiment of the communication system that is installed in a submarine and underwater work system, many studies have been progressing. This scope of the main studies in the meantime. It made it possible for a diver and a scuba diver who arc difficult to notice the situation of the outside because of staying in the water to hear a sound through a small speaker by using a ultra sound transducer that a central frequency is 32KHz after modulation of a voice to give the information of the outside. Also in case of happening an emergency to a diver in the water, it made him/her ask for help to a person in the outside by pressing a key and send a letter data to a person in the outside by using a keyboard. Through this system, it is possible to send a voice or data between the underwater and the outside and it is available to a diver or skin scuba diver.

In this paper, the performance of the selective combining according to the channel selection decision method of frequency diversity is evaluated in the underwater frequency selective channel. The underwater acoustic channel in the shallow sea has a complex multipath characteristic by combining various environmental factors such as boundary surface reflection and sound wave refraction according to the water temperature layer. In particular, frequency selectivity due to multipath causes energy fluctuation in a communication channel, which reduces SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) and deteriorates communication performance. In this paper, we applied the frequency diversity technique using multiple channels to secure the communication performance according to the frequency selectivity by multipath. For each channel, 4-FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) and selective combining were applied, the performance was evaluated by applying the maximum value, average value, and majority decision of the signal in order to decide the demodulation channel selection of the selective combining.
A receiving array system can be applied for tonal noise analysis of underwater vehicles, but it is difficult to install and operate, and a lot of cost is required. In order to overcome this problem, this paper proposes a method to measure the tonal noise of underwater vehicle after synthesizing a virtual array using single receiver. The proposed method compensates the Doppler frequency and time delay caused by the movement of the underwater sound source and applies the focused beamforming technique. The performance of the proposed method was analyzed via simulation.

Communication underwater is severely limited when compared to communications in air because water is essentially opaque to electromagnetic radiation except in visible range. Acoustic systems are capable of long range communication, but offer limited data rates and significant latency due to the speed of sound in water. On the other hand, optical wireless communication has been proposed as one of the best alternatives to meet the requirements of the underwater observation and subsea monitoring systems. It will help In this study, we are developing an underwater optical communication system that integrates with a depot ship floating on the water. An interface between LED lighting communication system and Bluetooth module is presented to support the underwater-to-air communications. Error free image and text transmission at 3 m of water were achieved at bit rates of 230.4 kbps. This development effort will enhance infrastructure to efficiently interconnect between underwater wireless systems and command ship networks for underwater monitoring.
In underwater communications, there are many challenges due to energy limitations, long propagation delay, low data rate, and high power loss, unlike terrestrial RF communications. Especially, the propagation delay of underwater acoustic channel is five orders of magnitude higher than in electro-magnetic terrestrial channels due to the low speed of sound(1,500m/s). Thus, the MAC protocols for terrestrial communications are not suitable for underwater network. In this paper, we studied the considerations for MAC protocol in underwater acoustic channel. Here, we concentrated on CSMA based MAC protocols. From the results, we confirmed that the number of control packets has an important effect on the performance in underwater environment. These results would be useful in designing MAC protocols for underwater acoustic communications.

For the accurate inspection of the resources and space in the ocean, the method of locating the measurement equipments in the seafloor and retrieving these equipments later after a certain period of time. is generally used. In this method, the reliability of retrieving measurement equipments is very important. In our proposed remotely-controlled acoustic release system, an underwater ultrasonic wave recognition algorithm by which we can recognize the sound signal without the influence of disturbances due to underwater environment changes is developed, and a battery is used for the reduction of electric power consumption. we show the effectiveness of our proposed system through experimental results.
A superhydrophobic mesh is a unique structure that blocks water, while allowing gases, sound waves, and energy to pass through the holes in the mesh. This mesh is used in various devices, such as gas- and energy-permeable waterproof membranes for underwater sensors and electronic devices. However, it is difficult to fabricate micro- and nano-structures on three-dimensional surfaces, such as the cylindrical surface of a wire mesh. In this research, we successfully produced a superhydrophobic water-repellent mesh with a high contact angle (> $150^{\circ}$) for nanofibrous structures. Conducting polymer (CP) composite nanofibers were evenly coated on a stainless steel mesh surface, to create a superhydrophobic mesh with a pore size of $100{\mu}m$. The nanofiber structure could be controlled by the deposition time. As the deposition time increased, a high-density, hierarchical nanofiber structure was deposited on the mesh. The mesh surface was then coated with Teflon, to reduce the surface energy. The fabricated mesh had a static water contact angle of $163^{\circ}$, and a water-pressure resistance of 1.92 kPa.

The non-cavitating noise of underwater propeller is considered numerically in this study. The main purpose is to analyze non-cavitating noise from underwater propellers in various operating conditions with different configurations. Noise is predicted by using time-domain acoustic analogy, boundary element method, and computational hydro-acoustics. The flow field is analyzed with potential-based panel method, and then time-dependant pressure data are used as the input for Focus Williams-Hawkings formulation to predict far field acoustics. Furthermore, boundary element method and computational hydro-acoustics are also considered to investigate duct propeller and ducted multi-stage propeller to consider the reflection and diffraction of sound waves. With this methodology, noise intensity and directivity of each noise sources could be well analyzed.
