  • This paper proposes a method to estimate the underwater target object's yaw angle using a sonar image. A simulator modeling imaging mechanism of a sonar sensor and a generative adversarial network for style transfer generates realistic template images of the target object by predicting shapes according to the viewing angles. Then, the target object's yaw angle can be estimated by comparing the template images and a shape taken in real sonar images. We verified the proposed method by conducting water tank experiments. The proposed method was also applied to AUV in field experiments. The proposed method, which provides bearing information between underwater objects and the sonar sensor, can be applied to algorithms such as underwater localization or multi-view-based underwater object recognition.

  • Modernized GNSS such as new GPS signals updated GLONASS and coming Galileo promises higher quality and higher reliability for users. Powerful technologies such as Internet, ubiquitous network technology and sensor network has been used to promote a safe and more secure lifestyle. This report describes experimental trials to combine these technologies namely GPS and Sensor Network into a high-performance system. GPS is used to enlarge the communication range, resolving the service area limitations, as a wider service area is required at shore areas compared to urban area. GPS position datum is also used as primary network routing information to get practical Sensor Network. Another application is the under water Sensor Network. Accurate GPS position and time are used to establish stable and high reliability underwater acoustic Sensor Network. This paper describes the background of the project 'Harbor area Marine Ubiquitous Sensor Network', preliminary consideration and testing. Radio and acoustic communication is the main focus of this preliminary experiment.

  • In this paper, we propose a network coding scheme that is one of the most promising techniques for overcoming transmission errors in underwater acoustic communications. It is assumed that the proposed scheme operates in a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network where multiple sensor nodes share the underwater acoustic channel in both the frequency and the time domains by means of orthogonal codes. The network topology deploys multi-hop transmission with relaying between multiple source nodes and one destination node via multiple relay nodes. The proposed scheme is evaluated in terms of the successful packet delivery ratio of end-to-end transactions under varying packet loss rates. A computer simulation shows that the successful delivery ratio is maintained at over 95% even when the packet loss rate reaches 50%.

  • Unlike a terrestrial wireless sensor network which uses radio waves, UWASN(Underwater Acoustic Sensor Network) relies on acoustic waves. There are lots of ongoing researches for long latency and limited bandwidth of underwater sensor network by using acoustic wave. Packets transferred by node often colide in underwater sensor network due to long latency. To solve this kind of problem, in general, Back-off scheme which is used in wireless network is used. However, fixed Slot-time according to node allocation generates useless time delay, and this lowers network performance. In this thesis, active setting technique of Slot-time is proposed, and applied for already studied MAC protocol. At the conclusion, it was proved that the MAC protocol using the proposed scheme has better performance than existing MAC protocol as a result comparison.

  • Time synchronization in underwater environment is challenging due to high propagation delay and mobility of sensor nodes. Previous researches do not consider practical issues affecting on the accuracy of time synchronization such as high-channel access delay and relative position between sensor nodes. Also, those protocols using bidirectional message exchange shorten the network lifetime and decrease the network throughput because numerous transmission, reception and unnecessary overhearing can be occurred. Therefore, in our research, we suggest enhanced time synchronization based on features of underwater environment. It controls the instant of transmission by exploiting the feature of an oceanic movement and node deployment. Moreover, the protocol uses more accurate time information by removing channel access delay from the timestamp. The proposed scheme is also practical on the underwater sensor network requiring low-power consumption because the scheme conducts time-synchronization with smaller transmission and reception compared with previous works. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed protocol deceases time error by 2.5ms and 0.56ms compared with TSHL and MU-Sync respectively, reducing energy consumption by 68.4%.

  • Underwater Wireless Acoustic Sensor Networks have become an important area of research over the recent decades. Designing an underwater network, especially a media access control (MAC) protocol, faces many challenges due to the peculiarities of underwater environment. One of the most important problems is resulted from long and variable propagation delay of the acoustic wave. In this paper, we propose a new method, namely Dynamic Timeout over Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (DT/MACA), which is designed to handle long and high variable propagation delay in underwater acoustic sensor networks. In this proposed method, the difference timeout intervals are evaluated and applied to each network transmission. Simulation results show that our work not only improves the network throughput, but also decreases the unnecessary retransmission and end-to-end delay.

  • In this study, the characteristics of ultrasonic sensor fabricated with PZT-Polymer 1-3 type composites are investigated. The 3-D Underwater object recognition using the self-made ultrasonic sensor and SOFM neural network is presented. The ultrasonic sensor is satisfied with the required condition of commercial ultrasonic sensor in underwater. The 3-D underwater object recognition for the training data and the testing data are 100[100%], respectively. The experimental results have shown that the ultrasonic sensor fabricated with PZT-Polymer 1-3 type composites can be applied for sonar system.

  • The Underwater Wireless Sensor Network (UWSN) consists of sensor nodes equipped with a small battery of limited energy resource. Hence, the energy efficiency is a key design issue that needs to be addressed in order to improve the lifetime of the network. In this paper, we use a hexagon tessellation with and ideal cell size to deploy the underwater sensor nodes for the UWSN and propose an enhanced hybrid transmission method that considers the load balancing once the data transmission occurs.

  • In this paper, we developed an underwater localization system for underwater robot docking using the electromagnetic wave attenuation model. Electromagnetic waves are generally known to be impossible to use in water environment. However, according to the conclusions of the previous studies on the attenuation characteristics in underwater, the attenuation pattern is uniform and its model was accurately proposed and verified in 3-dimensional space via the omnidirectional antenna. In this paper, a docking structure and localization sensor system are developed for a widely used cone type docking mechanism. First, we fabricated electromagnetic wave range sensor transmit modules. And a mobile sensor node is equipped with unmanned underwater vehicle(UUV)s. The mobile node senses the four different signal strength (RSS: Received Signal Strength) from fixed nodes, and the obtained RSS data are transformed to each distance information using the 3-Dimensional EM wave attenuation model. Then, the relative localization between the docking area and underwater robot can be achieved according to optimization algorithm. Finally, experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed localization system for the docking induction by comparing the errors in the actual position of the mobile node and the theoretical position through the model.

  • In this paper, we have described the characteristics of the Underwater Distributed Sensor Network (UDSN) and proposed the conceptual design guideline by an effectiveness analysis. To perform the effectiveness analysis, we defined an battlefield environment, and then analyzed principal components which compose the UDSN to find out simulation parameters and system constraints. We have chosen a measure of effectiveness based on a target trajectory, which could enhance intuitive understanding about current status, and performed various simulations to reveal critical design parameters in terms of sensor node types, arrangement, cost and combination of detection information.
