  • In this paper, Various network adaptive MAC scheduling technique is proposed to effectively overcome limits of narrow bandwidth and low transmission speed in underwater. UPFC(Underwater Packet Flow Control) is a technique to reduce both the number of transmission and transmission time using three types (Normal, Blocked, Parallel) of data transmission. In this technique, the load information, in which a transmission node have, is transmitted to destination node using marginal bit in reserved header. Then the transmitted information is referred to determine weighting factor. According to the weighting factor, scheduling is dynamically changed adaptively. The performance of UPFC is analyzed and flow control technique which can be applied to Cluster Based Network and Ad Hoc network as well.

  • Underwater acoustic sensor networks exhibit characteristics such as high propagation delay and low data rates, which are different from those of terrestrial wireless networks. Therefore, the conventional protocols used in wireless networks can be restrictive and inefficient when applied to underwater acoustic sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a medium access control protocol (MAC) to enhance the energy efficiency and throughput in underwater acoustic sensor networks. The proposed protocol employs a slot-based competition mechanism that reserves a time slot to send a data packet in advance. In the proposed protocol, collision between nodes can occur due to competition to obtain a slot. However, the proposed protocol minimizes the collisions between nodes because the nodes store the reservation information of the neighboring nodes, this reduces unnecessary energy consumption and increases throughput. We perform a simulation to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol with regard to the energy consumption, the number of collision, channel utilization, throughput and transmission delay. We compare the proposed protocol with the conventional protocol, and the performance results show that the proposed protocol outperforms the conventional protocol.

  • In this paper, we propose a medium access control(MAC) protocol for reducing the energy efficiency and for improving the transmission efficiency in underwater acoustic sensor networks. In underwater environment, the transmission delay is longer and bandwidth is smaller than terrestrial environment. Considering these points, we propose a new MAC protocol to enhance throughput and to manage efficiently the energy of nodes. The proposed protocol operates as a channel reservation scheme to decrease data collisions, and uses a mechanism to control the hidden node problem and the exposed node problem occurred in ad hoc networks. The proposed protocol consists of the slotted based transmission frame and reduces data collisions between nodes by putting separately the reservation period in the transmission frame. In addition, it is able to solve the hidden node problem and the exposed node problem by reservation information between nodes. We carry out the simulation to evaluate the proposed protocol in terms of the average energy consumption, the ratio of collision, throughput, and the average transmission delay, and compare the proposed protocol to a traditional MAC protocol in the underwater environment. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol outperforms the traditional protocol under a various of network parameters.

  • A hierarchical time division multiple access (HTDMA) medium access control (MAC) protocol is proposed for clustered mobile underwater acoustic networks. HTDMA consists of two TDMA scheduling protocols (i.e., TDMA1 and TDMA2) in order to accommodate mobile underwater nodes (UNs). TDMA1 is executed among surface stations (e.g., buoys) using terrestrial wireless communication in order to share mobility information obtained from UNs which move cluster to cluster. TDMA2 is executed among UNs, which send data to their surface station as a cluster head in one cluster. By sharing mobility information, a surface station can instantaneously determine the number of time slots in a TDMA2 frame up to as many as the number of UNs which is currently residing in its cluster. This can enhance delay and channel utilization performance by avoiding the occurrence of idle time slots. We analytically investigate the delay of HTDMA, and compare it with that of wellknown contention-free and contention-based MAC protocols, which are TDMA and Slotted-ALOHA, respectively. It is shown that HTDMA remarkably decreases delay, compared with TDMA and Slotted-ALOHA.

  • Main design issues for MAC (Medium Access Control) protocol in underwater sensor networks are long propagation delay caused by the low speed of sound, difficult synchronization, and energy-limited node's life. We aimed to mitigate the problems of strict synchronization and channel inefficiency of TDMA and also the throughput degradation induced by unavoidable collisions in contention based MAC protocols. This proposed protocol improved not only the energy efficiency by adopting a sleep-mode, but also the throughput by reducing collisions and increasing channel efficiency.

  • In this paper, an adaptive MAC technique for various underwater environment with narrow-bandwidth and low transmission speed was proposed. In previously published Underwater Packet Flow Control (UPFC) technique, three transmission types (normal, block and parallel transmission) had been proposed using the number of transmission and transmission time. In addition to the UPFC, the proposed technique is an improved version of UPFC having more effective queuing technique for merge transmission. A mathematical model of the proposed queuing theory was constructed and its increased efficiency per unit transmission number was also verified based on simulations.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel energy efficient MAC protocol which is based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and exploits the physical characteristic that propagation loss of acoustic wave depends on the distance. In the proposed scheme, sensor nodes are grouped according to the distance to sink node. Then, each group uses a different frequency band. The proposed scheme not only enables all sensor nodes to maintain the signal-to-noise ratio above a certain required level (Accepted Minimum SNR, AMS), but also reduces overall transmission power consumption. In addition, the dynamic sub-channel allocation is employed in order to improve data transmission rate. Simulations show that proposed MAC protocol has better performance in a delay-tolerant underwater acoustic sensor networks.
