  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the preparation time of fire-fighting water for public fire hydrants and ground, underground fire hydrants. The equipment preparation time for stage 1 was 20.50 seconds for ground type and 24.67 seconds for underground type. The reason for this difference in preparation time is that an underground fire hydrant requires additional standpipes to connect to the main conduit of Paru and the underground hydrant, which open the manhole cover. Water tank Maintenance joint with water hose male coupling of the second stage was similar to that of the ground type of 48.50 seconds and underground water tipe of 49.00 seconds. This is because the operation of connecting the fire hose to the maintenance tank of the water tank car is the same. In the third stage, the water pipe connection was 43 seconds for ground type and 174.33 seconds for underground type. The reason why the time for connecting the water pipe to the fire hydrant is large difference is that the underground fire hydrant is opened by opening the manhole cover, After connecting the stand pipe to the fire hydrant, the additional process of connecting the water pipe to the stand pipe is required, which is considered to have greatly increased the time required. The opening of Water Control Valve and spindle Valve in the fourth stage was 66.50 seconds for the ground type and 78.83 seconds for the underground type. This difference is due to the fact that the spindle of the ground fire hydrant is located on the main body and can be easily opened, but the underground type is located next to the main body under the manhole and requires additional time to connect the opening equipment.

  • The environment of underground spaces might be considered in view of working environment during the construction and living environment after completion of the construction work. For controlling environment of underground space, an appropriate measures have to be taken on the governing factors such as air flow, dust, gases, heat, radiation, noise, illumination and water. The more critical matter, in underground environmental point of view, is underground disasters such as fire, gas explosion and water inrush. This paper presents the general introduction of these factors mentioned above and some outcomes of research works as of now.

  • This study is analysis for adjacent structures and ground movement by deep excavation work. Underground Inclinometer has shown that deformation of increment is minor within to allowable limit. According to the measurements result of slope and crack for adjacent structures, a detached house showed bigger than hospital structure to deformation of increment. Variation of underground water level didn't effect so much to ground and adjacent structures movement because underground water flows in rock and didn't give the water press to propped walls. Measurement data of strut variation is within tolerance limit. Because excavation site's wall was strengthened suitably. This study will contribute in establishment of measurement standard and information-oriented construction during deep excavation in multi-layered ground including rock masses.

  • This study was carried out to survey trihalomethane formation potential(THMFP) levels in drinking underground water and to examine its characteristics in Kunsan area. In drinking underground water, THMFP increased with the lapse of reaction time and 96hr-THMFP was the highest of THMFPs examined. In many cases, 24hr-THMFP, 48hr-THMFP and 96hr-THMFP reflected 2hr-THMFP level due to the largest composition ratio of CHCl$_3$ decreased with the lapse of reaction of CHCl$_3$ among THM individuals. CHCl$_3$ was mostly formed within early 2hour of reaction time, but CHClBr$_2$ and CHBr$_3$ continued their formation until 48 hour. Accordingly, the composition ratio of CHCl$_3$ decreased with the lapse of reaction time while that of total Br derivatives increased. 96hr-THMFPs of drinking underground water in Kunsan area ranged from N.D.(not detected)~98.80 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$\ell$ and, in general, those of western section of Kunsan area, closer to the coast, showed the higher tendency. But, from their large range of variance, it could be considered that THMFPs differ individually even in the same section depending on such factors as the difference of water stream, circumstances of management and so on. All the parameters for water quality examined(pH, KMnO$_4$ consumption;UV$_{254}$ , TOC. Cl$^{[-10]}$ ) showed very week corelation with 96h-THMFP.

  • Water consumption at the farm is up to 48 percent of water resource of South Korea while manufacturing industry's is only $9.6\%$. The area of arable land is 2,077,067 ha and 27 percent of it is used for growing fruits and vegetables using furrow or surface irrigation at the greenhouse. Surface irrigation at the greenhouse for fruits and vegetables has problems such as over watering and insufficient supply of water to the fine roots of the plant. However, the research on the new method of irrigation to save water usage is few. The characteristics of soil wetting was measured for using surface irrigation and underground trickle irrigation method where water was supplied at 10, 15, 20, and 25 cm beneath the surface ground. Followings are summary of this study. 1. The efficiency of underground trickle irrigation was expected to be as high as twice of surface irrigation such as drip watering or sprinkling. 2. This improvement could be possible by using less than $50\%$ of irrigation water than surface irrigation to supply similar amount of water near fine roots. 3. Surface irrigation causes soil compaction as deep as 20 cm below the surface ground which reduces soil porosity and root respiration ending up developing less fine roots. 4. Underground trickle irrigation can prevent overdamping in the greenhouse since it does not over wet the surface soil. At winter, the amount of agricultural chemical usage could be reduced since this irrigation method does not develop blight or crop disease from condensation of water vapor.

  • Surface water at the lower part of the Seom-jin river has a high salinity because the erosion at river bottom has made sea water move upstream continuously since 1978. The effect of underground dam on the prevention of sea water intrusion was modelled in this study. Present chloride concentration in surface water decreases exponentially along a river and in groundwater is about one-tenth of surface water's. The finite element method model, FEFLOW, was conducted on the assumption that the underground dam with a height of 25m over a bedrock is located under a water surface at the site of 4.6km from an estuary. The result shows that the position with chloride concentration of 0.25psu moves downstream from the sites of 25km to 22km, if an enough sedimentation with 5m thickness happens in the upper reservoir of underground dam. On the other side, the underground dam is little effective for the prevention of sea water intrusion in case of non-sedimentation.
