  • In order to analyze failure rates of underground transmission power cable systems in Korea, the survey has been performed for the failure cases of cables, joints, and terminations in CV, OF and POF cable systems which occurred from 1983 to 1998. During 16 years, the failure cases due to trips of the systems were 47 among the total 108 cases, These 47 cases could be divided into internal reasons(manufacture/installation, corrosion and degradation) of 16 cases and external reasons (external mechanical damages, lightning, fire. etc.) of 31 cases. For the 154 kV cable systems during 12 years from 1987 to 1998, total failure rate was 0.0057 [case/100C-km/year] and internal reason failure rate was 0.0020 [case/100C-km/Year], which is similar to those of foreign countries. Also, the many cases of internal reason failures occurred in the early stage after the operations due to incorrect installations. This implies that the installation process is very important and some diagnostic tests such as PD measurement are needed besides after laying test.

  • Recently, road cave-ins, also referred to as ground sinking, have become a problem in urban environments. Public utility facilities such as sewage pipelines, communications pipes, gas pipes, power cables, and other types of underground structures are installed below the roads. It was reported that cave-ins are caused by the aging and lack of proper maintenance of underground facilities, as well as by construction problems. A road cave-in is first initiated by the formation of cavities typically induced by the breakage of underground pipelines. The cavities then grow and reach the base of the pavement. The traffic load applied at the surface of the roads causes an abrupt plastic deformation. This type of accident can be considered as a type of disaster. A road cave-in can threaten both human safety and the economy. It may even result in the loss of human life. In the city of Seoul, efforts to prevent damage before cave-ins occur have been prioritized, through a method of discovering and repairing joints through the 3D GPR survey.

  • This study proposes an optics-based active sensing system for continuous monitoring of underground pipelines in nuclear power plants (NPPs). The proposed system generates and measures guided waves using a single laser source and optical cables. First, a tunable laser is used as a common power source for guided wave generation and sensing. This source laser beam is transmitted through an optical fiber, and the fiber is split into two. One of them is used to actuate macro fiber composite (MFC) transducers for guided wave generation, and the other optical fiber is used with fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors to measure guided wave responses. The MFC transducers placed along a circumferential direction of a pipe at one end generate longitudinal and flexural modes, and the corresponding responses are measured using FBG sensors instrumented in the same configuration at the other end. The generated guided waves interact with a defect, and this interaction causes changes in response signals. Then, a damage-sensitive feature is extracted from the response signals using the axi-symmetry nature of the measured pitch-catch signals. The feasibility of the proposed system has been examined through a laboratory experiment.

  • This paper describes the analysis of sheath circulating current and various methods to reduce the large circulating current in case of operating cable system using EMTP/ATPDraw. And also, possible methods are proposed through a detailed analysis regarding cable systems by considering various electrical and environmental factors. It is evaluated that the proposed reduction methods can be effectively applied to reduce the large sheath circulating over current with the minimized electrical problems.

  • It is well known that water treeing is one of the main cause of breakdown in underground power cables, but water tree is not easy to observe. This aging phenomenon was resulted in effect of water and electric field and so on. In this paper, Distilled water was used as water electrode to observe the water treeing in XLPE(cross-linked polyethylene). To observe easily, sample was made of pallet types so water tree was able to show by microscope. As a result, electrical tree appears at niddle electrode tip which was concentrated electric field, but water tree was shown up different types that were appealed in total area of water electrode as well as water electrode tip.

  • Permeation of $Ca^{2+}$ ions in PVC and flame-retardant polyolefin (FR) compounds for the sheath of medium voltage underground cables was studied. At $70^{\circ}C$ ion permeation increases fast at times of up to a few tens of hour and then at a relatively slow rate. The first fast increase was attributed to the diffusion of ions in the samples while the second slow increase of ion permeation was attributed to the permeation of $Ca^{2+}$ ions through the samples. It was also found that the diffusivity of $Ca^{2+}$ ions in FR compounds is much higher than that in PVC compounds.

  • In order to evaluate the soundness of 10 year service-aged XLPE-insulated 22.9 kV underground distribution cables, semiconductive shields have been characterized. The edge of insulation near the insulation shield shows a drastic decrease of OIT. Impurities such as Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu were detected in both conductor and insulation shields. Their concentrations at the insulation shield are much higher than those at the strand shield. All these facts suggest that the edge of insulation near the insulation shield is degraded considerably, which might be attributed to the oxidation reaction of insulation by a large amount of impurities in the insulation shield.
