  • Numerical and experimental studies are performed to investigate the effect of the underbody shape of the simplified road vehicle on drag and life. Four different vehicle models with front and rear slanted variations at the lower surface are used in this study. Cases with a slanted underbody surface at front have smaller drag than those without a slanted surface. Also, cases with a slanted underbody surface at rear have smaller lift than those without a slanted surface. Pressure distributions along the model surfaces and velocity fields at the wake region are examined in detail. In general, numerical solutions are in agreement with experimental results.

  • In this study, the relationship between tie shape and underbody train gust of high-speed train is numerically investigated. To this end, complex train underbody/railroad model is replaced by simple plate/tie model. And it is tried to find a most important parameter for reduction of underbody train gust through the Taguchi method and orthogonal array. As a result, it is verified that the height of tie is most sensitive to the underbody train gust because of the cavity effect between ties. When the width and distance between ties are decreased, underbody train gust is also reduced. Consequently, the heighter is examined which can give the similar effect of higher tie without replacement of tie. The 5cm heighter can reduce underbody train gust about $73\%$, which value is only $7\%$ less than the higher tie.

  • The ballast-flying, induced by strong underbody flow of high-speed train, can damage train underbody, wheel and even cause the safety problems. For this reason, a heighter is being used to prevent ballast-flying through underbody flow reduction. In this research, flow field around a heighter is numerically simulated.. And the parametric study of various heighter geometries is performed to find out more effective heighter shape. Through these numerical studies, the relation between the heighter shape and underbody flow is found out. Also new heighter shapes are numerically investigated and their performances of underbody flow reduction are verified.

  • In this study, field measurements on KTX, Nuriro and TTX train have been conducted at Kyeongbu and Honam line to predict the wind gust under train at the speed-up of major conventional railway lines using Kiel-probe array and multi-channel pressure scanning system. The results show that the average wind velocity during train passage normalized by train speed is independent to train speed, thus the wind gust for a given train type at the speed-up condition could be predicted. The relationship between the shape of underbody and the characteristics of the underbody wind gust has been discussed.

  • A series do wind tunnel tests were conducted for Korean high-speed train model with various shape components to assess the contributions to aerodynamic drag. In order to elucidate the ground effects, two different wind tunnels, one with a moving ground system and the other with a fixed ground, were used for the same model and the results of both were compared and analyzed in detail. The result show that a suitable ground simulation is necessary for the test of a train model with many cars and detailed underbody. But the relative difference of the drag coefficients for the modifications of shape components can be measured by a fixed ground test with high accuracy and low cost. The effects of the nose shape, the inter-cargap and the bogie-fairing on total drag were discussed and some ideas were prosed to decrease the aerodynamic resistance of high speed train.

  • In order to reduce a aerodynamic drag of the rear, body, effects of rear lower end configuration of a vehicles were investigated by measuring the pressure distribution, visual flow phenomena by the use of digital image processing technique. The use of flow visualization in recent years has improved the general understanding of structure of complex flow and has yielded valuable information for analyzing fluid flow. As the results, it was found that the shape of rear lower part vehicles not only effected on the pressure distribution of the rear part of the vehicle but also difference of the flow phenomena.

  • The aerodynamic characteristics of the most popular car (PONY 2) produced in Korea have been experimentally investigated by Seoul National University's wind tunnel. The model (PONY 2) chosen for the wind tunnel was a 1/5 scale of the original car without simulated underbody, cooling air flow and accessories. The measured aerodynamic drag coefficient corrected by JARI formula is 0.45 which is very close to those of small foreign cars. To see the effect of the different configurations on the aerodynamic drag, the modifications have been made by changing the hood slope and backlight slope, and putting the add-on-aerodynamic devices on the orignal shape. The rear spoiler was found the most effective one to reduce the aerodynamic drag. It may be concluded that the considerable aerodynamic drag reduction can be achieved by changing the slopes and A-O-A devices at the proper places of the car.

  • The center floor is a part of underbody of cars. The assembling method is mostly a resistant spot welding. But the resistant spot welding has many demerits in productivity such as low welding speed, large spatter occurring, hard to verify the welding quality. The laser welding has many merits such as high welding speed, high static and dynamic weld strength. So the laser welding has been studied to substituted the resistant spot welding. Therefore, in this study, as a pre-evaluation stage for replacing the resistance spot welding with laser in production of automobile parts, the weldability of cold rolled and zinc coated steel sheets is studied and also evaluated the weld strength by the tensile shear test. And the shape of weld bead appearances and micro structure of the weld bead section is also evaluated.

  • The effect of modifying the shape of a high-performance EMU train on the aerodynamic drag is studied here using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) based on three dimensional Steady-state Navier-Stokes equation and two equation turbulence modeling. FLUENT 12 and Gambit 2.4.6 are employed for a numerical simulation of the aerodynamic drag of a streamlined-shape train as well as a proto type train. The characteristics of the aerodynamic drag of trains in tunnels are analyzed in a comparison with these characteristics in an open space. The contribution of the aerodynamic drag of each case is also investigated to establish principal pertaining to drag reduction for urban trains in tunnels. The aerodynamic drag of a streamlined train was reduced to 9.8% relative to a proto-type train with a blunt nose and a protruding roof facility and underbody shape: the running resistance is expected to be reduced by as much as 4% at a running speed of 80km/h.
