A Value-Based Real Time Pricing Under Imperfect Information on Consumer Behavior

  • One of the major challenges confronting a multiservice electric utility is the establishment of the right prices for its services. The key objectives of particular pricing schemes are reasonableness of company earnings, economic efficiency, the responsiveness of supply and of the allocation of sources to the desires of consumers, and maintenance of some degree of competition. This paper proposes a value-based pricing mechanism amenable to the current deregulation situation in electricity market allowing service differentiation. The proposed pricing mechanism can be implemented in a nodal auction model, and can also be applied to direct load control.

  • 우리나라의 주택용 전력요금체계는 전력 사용량이 증가함에 따라 가격이 상승하는 구간별 가격체계의 특징을 보이고 있다. 우리나라의 현행 요금체계는 선진국의 경우보다 과도한 누진체계를 갖고 있어, 누진제 완화에 대한 논의가 이어져오고 있다. 기존 국내의 주택용 전력수요함수 추정에 대한 연구는 구간별 가격체계 하에서 주택용 전력수요함수를 추정함에 있어 소비자의 예산제약선이 선형이 아닌 굴절되는 형태를 갖게 된다는 점, 구간별 가격체계 하에서 소비자가 인식하는 가격이 과연 경제학 이론대로 한계가격인가에 관한 점, 가격변수의 내생성에 대한 문제 등을 충분히 고려하고 있지 않은 경우가 많다. 이에 본 연구는 주택용 전력수요함수를 올바르게 추정하여 그 결과를 바탕으로 누진제 완화에 대한 시나리오 분석을 수행하고자 한다.

  • Optimal pricing research in general has been focused on profit maximizing strategy under the given product life-time T. Here we have tried to study the effect of uncertain product life-time on dynamic optimal pricing strategy. In reality, the life-time of product is more likely to be uncertain and not known as well. In terms of approximating the model to the concerned reality, so-called model validity, it seems to be more desirable to consider the uncertainty of product life-time into the optimal pricing strategy model, For this purpose, we tried two different approaches. One is to consider diverse product life-time probability functions under fixed life-time T. In this case, we might have the same product life-time as the previous study, but the process could be different in the expectation of product's discontinuity. The other is that life-time itself is not determined and thus it is the situation in which we can only decide optimal price on incremental basis. The former is the situation in which although we got some strong guess on life-time of a certain product, the pattern of expected life-time probability could be different. The question is what could be optimal pricing strategies on such different product life-time situations. But since in the latter, we don't assume any idea on the life-time of product. proper optimal pricing could be derived only from the past prices and diffusion information. While the latter seems to be safer in the aspect of model assumption, the former could be more realistic because we might have more or less a prior knowledge on the product life-time itself.

호텔 객실가격정책(客室價格政策)의 합리화(合理化)에 관한 연구(硏究) (A Study on the Optimazation of the Hotel Room Rate Pricing Policy)

  • The optional market segmentation pricing policy for rooms of hotels are investigated under the assumption of a linear demand function, and for four different situations: (1) single price market, (2) optimal segmentation of the unused capacity of a single-price-maeket, (3) optimal segmantation for all rooms, and (4) opimal segmentation for infiltration from higher priced to adjacent lower priced segments. The purpose of tis study is th show that with proper pricing policy, it would be possible to increase profits considerably. Such a profit increase might be achived by market segmentation coupled with product differentiation, where the different market segments are identified, sperated, and in each segment a different price per room is called for. The different prices are determined based on the specific price elasticity typical for each market segment and the relavant costs. The pricing model implied in this study is based on basic economic pricing theory and optimization techniques. While somewhat complex in its mathmatical solution, it can be easily programmed for use by practitioners, avoiding the need to cope with the technical aspects of the solution. In section II-1, the optimal single-market Single-price policy is evaluated. The optimal strategy under the constraint that only the previously unutilized rooms are segmented is analysed in section II-2, while the optimal strategy without this constraint is determined in section II-3. In section II-4, the optimal market-segmentation pricing policy is derived for the case in which market seperation is allowed for all the rooms under the assumption of custtomer infiltration from each market segment to the adjacent lower priced segment Finally, some considerations relating to the practicality of the model as a decision support tool and the requirements for its implementation are discussed in section III.

THE VALUATION OF VARIANCE SWAPS UNDER STOCHASTIC VOLATILITY, STOCHASTIC INTEREST RATE AND FULL CORRELATION STRUCTURE

  • This paper considers the case of pricing discretely-sampled variance swaps under the class of equity-interest rate hybridization. Our modeling framework consists of the equity which follows the dynamics of the Heston stochastic volatility model, and the stochastic interest rate is driven by the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross (CIR) process with full correlation structure imposed among the state variables. This full correlation structure possesses the limitation to have fully analytical pricing formula for hybrid models of variance swaps, due to the non-affinity property embedded in the model itself. We address this issue by obtaining an efficient semi-closed form pricing formula of variance swaps for an approximation of the hybrid model via the derivation of characteristic functions. Subsequently, we implement numerical experiments to evaluate the accuracy of our pricing formula. Our findings confirm that the impact of the correlation between the underlying and the interest rate is significant for pricing discretely-sampled variance swaps.

Does a Firm's IPO Affect Other Firms in the Same Conglomerate?

  • Purpose - This study aimed to examine the behavior surrounding the Initial Public Offering (IPO) event of firms within the same conglomerate and the impact of under-pricing and Return on Equity(ROE) on a firm's abnormal stock returns. Design/methodology - This study collected data from 166 South Korean Chaebols, consisting of 355 firms distributed as 202 listed on Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) and 153 firms listed on Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (KOSDAQ) from 2000 to 2020. The Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and the multiple regression analysis were hired to analyze the data. Findings - First, we found an adverse price reaction of IPO listing in the same chaebol group, and firms with higher under-pricing affect other firms' stock prices more adversely within the conglomerate. Next, we explored a negatively significant relation between ROE and the chaebol firms' stock returns during IPO events. Research implications - The novelty of this study is there are not many empirical studies on the impact of IPO within a conglomerate. So, the findings of this study contribute to the literature for analyzing stock's abnormal returns within a conglomerate.

비대칭적 정보 하에서 진입 억제와 가격 경쟁 (Entry Deterrence and Price Competition under Asymmetric Information)

  • We study limit pricing in a price-based duopoly market under asymmetric information on the demand state. An incumbent, who is a monopolist in the initial period, has complete information on the size of a market, while a potential entrant only knows it partially. After observing the sales price of the incumbent in the first period, the entrant decides whether to enter a duopoly market and the sales price if she chooses to. We present a separating perfect Bayesian equilibrium, which indicates that limit pricing can deter the entry of a potential entrant under price competition when there is information asymmetry about the demand state.

  • Transfer pricing mechanism is applied to the problem of input buffer size in the context of interfacing a flexible manufacturing system with multiple following production lines. The size of the input buffers can be determined economically by using non-linear transfer pricing either in a decentralized organization or in a centralized organization. Under the certain conditions, input buffer size determined from this non-linear transfer pricing is more economical than the traditional economic lot size model. The benefit comes from transferring part of FMS' inventory to the following production lines. And this non-linear transfer pricing makes sense if the FMS' unit inventory holding cost is high enough.

  • The study on Wholesale pricing of MVNO using two way interconnection charge system is rare. This paper considers MVNO possessing its own facilities and subscribers. While previous studies focus on wholesale provision by MNO, this paper employs another approach from existing MVNO model. This paper introduces two way interconnection charge system by recognizing that mobile network interconnection is important to complete the call from MNO to MVNO as well as the call from MVNO to MNO. Also it is interesting to analyze wholesale pricing when there is brand loyalty between MNO and MVNO. This paper analyzes retail pricing and wholesale pricing under duopoly competition and drives social optimal solutions using linear city model.

A Measurement-Based Adaptive Control Mechanism for Pricing in Telecommunication Networks

  • The problem of pricing for a telecommunication network is investigated with respect to the users' sensitivity to the pricing structure. A functional optimization problem is formulated, in order to compute price reallocations as functions of data collected in real time during the network evolution. No a-priori knowledge about the users' utility functions and the traffic demands is required, since adaptive reactions to the network conditions are sought in real time. To this aim, a neural approximation technique is studied to exploit an optimal pricing control law, able to counteract traffic changes with a small on-line computational effort. Owing to the generality of the mathematical framework under investigation, our control methodology can be generalized for other decision variables and cost functionals.
