This study investigated the engineering properties of waste tire powder-bottom ash added composite soil, which was developed to recycle dredged soil, bottom ash, and waste tire powder. Test specimens were prepared using 5 different percentages of waste tire powder content(0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% by weight of the dry dredged soil), three different percentages of bottom ash content (0%, 50%, and 100% by weight of the dry dredged soil), and three different particle sizes of waste tire powder (0.1~2 mm, 0.9~5 mm, and 2~10 mm). Several series of unconfined compression tests, direct shear tests, and flow tests were conducted. The experimental results indicated that the waste tire powder content, particle size of waste tire powder, and bottom ash content influenced the strength and stress-strain behavior of the composite soil. The flow value increased with an increase in water content, but decreased with an increase in waste tire powder content.
The strength of granular mixtures can be controlled by the majority of the mixture, fine grains. However, in some cases, the small amount of gravel in the mixture may influence the strength of the mixture. In this study, the effect of some dispersed gravels on strength of sand is evaluated. Gravels are embedded in the middle of each cemented sand layer. The size and number of embedded gravels varies. After two days curing, a series of unconfined compression tests is performed on the cemented sand with dispersed gravels. In addition to that, a series of direct shear tests is also carried out on clean sand with gravels to evaluate its friction angle. For the specimens with the same ratio of gravel weight of 7% in which gravel size and number are different, an unconfined compressive strength(UCS) of a specimen with gravels decreases up to 15% compared to a specimen without gravel and then increases with increasing gravel number. For specimens embedded with the same size of gravel, UCS decreases and then increases as a number of gravel increases. As a number of gravel increases, a friction angle of clean sand with gravels decreases up to $5^{\circ}$ and then recovers up to that of a specimen without gravel.
This paper investigates the mechanical characteristics of composite geo-material which was developed to reuse both dredged soils and bottom ash. The composite geo-material used in this experiment consists of dredged soil taken from the construction site of Busan New Port, cement, air foam and bottom ash. Bottom ash is a by-product generated at the Samcheonpo thermal power plant. Several series of laboratory tests were performed to investigate behavior characteristics of composite gee-material, in particular the reinforcing effect by mixing bottom ash. The experimental results of composite geo-material indicated that the stress-strain relationship and the unconfined compressive strength are strongly influenced by mixing conditions. Especially it was observed that the compressive strength of composite geo-material increased with an increase in bottom ash content due to reinforcing effect by the bottom ash. Compressive strength of composite geo-material increased with the increase in curing time. The 28-day strength of composite geo-material is $1.7{\sim}1.8$ times higher than the 7-day strength. The moist unit weight strongly depended on air-foam content as well as bottom ash content added to the composite goo-material. In composite geo-material, secant modulus ($E_{50}$) also increased as its compressive strength increased due to the inclusion of bottom ash.
This research is results of experimental and numerical works on characteristic of strength increase and bearing capacity in dredged and reclaimed soil due to desiccation shrinkage. For a soil sampled from southern coastal area in Korea, basic soil property tests and standard consolidation test with falling head permeability tests were carried out to obtain consolidational characteristics of soil. Double cone penetration test, laboratory vane test and unconfined compression test were also performed to investigate the change of shear strength with degree of desiccation. Model tests were performed in 1G environment and 30G level artificially accelerated condition by using the centrifuge model test facilities to investigate the bearing capacity of desiccated ground. Test results were analyzed by using the theoretical and load-settlement characteristics method proposed by Meyehof & Hanna(1978). On the other hands, the numerical technique, using the finite strain consolidation theory considering the effect of desiccation was used to estimate the appropriate time of using heavy construction equipments in field with respect to strength increase due to desiccation.

The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for utilization in environment-friendly and economically outstanding CSG construction method by physical and mechanical properties of CSG materials including characteristics of uniaxial compressive strength, microscopic structure and freezing and thawing resistance in accordance with the cement content and curing time of the cement, and size of specimen. In this study, specimens with cement content of 4, 6, 8 and 10% of the total weight were, and, in order to examine the characteristics of the sizes of specimen, specimens with ${\Phi}50{\times}100mm$, ${\Phi}100{\times}200mm$ and ${\Phi}150{\times}300mm$ were manufactured to assess the features including compressive strength, microscopic structure, freezing and thawing, and degree of wet-dry. As results, it was found that with greater size specimen or contents of cement in the specimen, compressive strength, freezing and thawing resistance, and wet-dry resistance increase. Moreover, reactive products for each size of specimen were examined and it was possible to verify that some typical needle structured ettringite was generated due to blending of cement through microscopic structure analysis such as SEM and EDS analysis.
Due to the confinement effects, Steel-Straps Tensioning Technique (SSTT) can significantly enhance the strength and ductility of high-strength concrete (HSC) members (Moghaddam et al. 2008). However, the enhancement especially in strength may result in slender member and more susceptible to instability (Jiang and Teng 2012a). This instability is particularly significant in HSC member as it inherent the brittle nature of the material (Galano et al. 2008). The current slenderness limit expression used in the design is mainly derived from the experiment and analysis results based on Normal strength concrete (NSC) column and therefore the direct application of these slenderness limit expressions to the HSC column is being questioned. Besides, a particular slenderness limit for the SSTT-confined HSC column which incorporated the pre-tensioned force and multilayers effects is not yet available. Hence, an analytical study was carried out in the view of developing a simple equation in order to determine the slenderness limit for HSC column confined with SSTT. Based on the analytical results, it was concluded that the existing slenderness limit expressions used in the design are appropriate for neither HSC columns nor SSTT-confined HSC columns. In this paper, a slenderness limit expression which has incorporated the SSTT-confinement effects is proposed. The proposed expression can also be applied to unconfined HSC columns.
The development of contaminated sites often requires foundation concrete to be placed in contact with soils contaminated with organic compounds. There is a common perception that organic compounds affect the setting and hardening of concrete, giving a reduced long-term strength. In this study, unconfined compressive strength tests for concrete cured in Ethylbenzene were performed. The possibility of byproduct to be used for aggregate of concretes as materials of construction was also evaluated by carring out the investigation of the characteristics of the mixture of concrete and crushed oyster shell which is treated as waste material and often illegally disposed at coastal oyster production site. The transformation of strength characteristics was investigated by varying the blending ratio of fly ash.
The primary aim of this study is to develop a three dimensional finite element (FE) model to predict the axial stress-strain relationship and ultimate strength of the FRP-wrapped UHPC columns by comparing experimental results. The reliability of four selected confinement models and three design codes such as ACI-440, CSA-S806-02, and ISIS CANADA is also evaluated in terms of agreement with the experimental results. Totally 6 unconfined and 36 different types of the FRP-wrapped UHPC columns are tested under monotonic axial compression. The values of ultimate strengths of FRP-wrapped UHPC columns obtained from the experimental results are compared and verified with finite element (FE) analysis results and the design codes mentioned above. The concrete damage plasticity model (CDPM) in Abaqus is utilized to represent the confined behavior of the UHPC. The results indicate that agreement between the test results and the non-linear FE analysis results is highly satisfactory. The CSA-S806-02 design code is considered more reliable than the ACI-440 and the ISIS CANADA design codes to calculate the ultimate strength of the FRP-wrapped UHPC columns. None of the selected confinement models that are developed for FRP-wrapped low and normal strength concrete columns can safely predict the ultimate strength of FRP-wrapped UHPC columns.

Laboratory experiment was performed to evaluate the influence of mixing conditions to the strength of solidified sandy soils with cement. The major physical factors considered in this experiment were the fine particles content(<$\sharp200%$), cement content(%) and water-cement ratio, and unconfined compressive strength test was performed on the samples at 7 and 28 cured day. The results of tests shows that when the cement content is relatively low (7~10 percents) the fine content in the sandy soils is very important, but when cement content is high the water-cement ratio became more important. It was appeared that in the range of the cement content of 7~10 percents, about 20~30 percents of fine content to the total sample weight is the optimum condition to get the maximum strength. In the case of the cement content of 13 percents, the strength of sample was considerably affected by the water-cement ratio rather than the fine content. In this paper, empirical equations were also developed and evaluated to verify the relationship among three factors by the multi-regression analysis.

Recently, the land area for many people has been limited because of industrialization and modernization in Korea. The large-scale constructions like the reclamation development projects have been progressed to resolve this problem mentioned above. Therefore, as many of the usefulconstruction materials as possible are needed to perform the large-scale construction projects. Many studies for the utilization of pond ash which has a similar characteristic of sand have been conducted and there has been often occurred many structural problems on roadbed in winter. Therefore, the characteristics of the freezing and thawing for Controlled Low-Strength Material (CLSM) using pond ash were analyzed and evaluated by unconfined compressive strength test in this study. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that new CLSM using pond ash with cement (8.2% by weight)was able to stand for the freezing and thawing behavior.
