In this study, various field and laboratory tests were performed to investigate the characteristics of shear strength and bearing behavior to be considered in the estimation of stability and trafficability in early stage of stabilization process in marine clay dredged deposit. Site characterization was carried out to grasp the basic properties of the deposit. Field vane test, unconfined compression test and direct shear test were conducted to evaluate the shear strength distribution for varied depths, and the characteristics of shear strength and stress-strain behavior of the crust layer. Plate load tests were also performed to estimate the bearing capacity and to assess load-settlement behavior and failure pattern of the deposit. The bearing capacity was also estimated using previously proposed methods for double-layered clay deposit. The estimated bearing capacity was compared with the results of the plate load tests and then, the applicability of the estimation method was discussed.
In this paper, iron ore tailings (IOT) were separated from the tailings field and used to prepare cement stabilized macadam (CSM) with porous basalt aggregate. First, the basic properties of the raw materials were studied. Porous basalt was replaced by IOT at ratios of 0, 20 %, 40 %, 60 %, 80 %, and 100 % as fine aggregate to prepare CSM, and the effects of different cement dosage (4 %, 5 %, 6 %) on CSM performance were also investigated. CSM's durability and mechanical performance with ages of 7 d, 28 d, and 90 d were studied with the unconfined compression strength test, splitting tensile strength test, compressive modulus test and freeze-thaw test, respectively. The changes in Ca2+ content in CSM of different ages and different IOT ratios were analyzed by the ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) titration method, and the micro-morphology of CSM with different ages and different IOT replaced ratio were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that with the same cement dosage, the strengths of the IOT-replaced CSM were weaker than that of the porous basalt aggregate at early stage, and the strength was highest at the replaced ratio of 60 %. With a cement dosage of 4 %, the unconfined compressive strength of CSM without IOT was increased by 6.78 % at ages from 28 d to 90 d, while the splitting tensile strength increased by 7.89 %. However, once the IOT replaced ratio reached 100 %, the values increased by about 76.24 % and 17.78 %, which was better than 0 % IOT. The CSM-IOT performed better than the porous basalt CSM at 90 d age. This means IOT can replace porous basalt fine aggregate as a pavement base.

In this test, there was two-dimensional model loading test implemented for analysis with respect to the problem of evaluating bearing capacity and the application range on the dredged and reclaimed ground, so it was possible to get the following result by comparing a result of loading test and an equation proposed previously. When the difference between average undrained shea. strength by (equation omitted)B of loading board width and the strength under. (equation omitted)B is mere than $\pm50%$, the applicability of Nc(coefficient of bearing capacity where $\phi=0$ analysis is considered in the single layer) was declined. As well, using Nc=5.7, 5.14(coeffcient of bearing capacity where $\phi=0$ analysis is applicable to saturated clay without special limit) for evaluating bearing capacity on the dredged and reclaimed ground causes poor applicability, therefore that seem to be applicable when water content is less than about 75% which makes the unconfined compression test possible.
With the increase of steel production research interest on the recycling of slag as a by-product also increases steadily. Currently in Korea a lot of researches on blast-furnace slag have been made. However, the researches on the steel slag have been rarely made. Also, a research of steel slag, especially the use of oxidation furnace slag as aggregates for concrete progress, is performing actively, but the research results on the furnace slag are almost nothing. Recently, the research about the furnace slag as backfill material and embankment material confirmed the possibility of the clay soil amendment. Therefore, the object of this study is to review the possibility as civil engineering materials for soil improvement and to find the optimum mixture ratio of furnace slag. This research analyzed the ingredient component of the reduced slag by SEM, XRF, XRD tests and examined the strength increase using unconfined compression tests when the clay and reduced slag are mixed each other. Through this test, the definite strength increase is confirmed according to the mixture of the reduced slag and the possibility of soil improvement is also confirmed based on this result. The object of the study is both utilizing the by-product for civil engineering purpose and effective recycling by the application of the furnace slag for soil improvement.
Shale and mudstone in Daegu-Gyungbuk area have low strength and resistance to weathering compared to other rocks. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate their strength depending on the degree of saturation and crack development. In this study, shales and mudstones were collected from several construction sites in Daegu-Gyungbuk area. Their basic material properties such as porosity, SEM, chemical component, and durability were tested. A porosity (absorptivity) of mudstone was 31% (25%), which was 6 (8) times higher than that of shale. Some mudstone was easily disintegrated with water and it consisted of highly-active clay mineral such as smectite type. These rocks were prepared by small cube specimens for unconfined compression test. An unconfined compressive strength of dry rock was compared with saturated one. Microwave oven was operated step by step to stimulate void water within a saturated rock, which resulted into high temperature and micro crack initiation within rocks. A strength of microwaved rocks was compared with operation time and crack initiation. As a result, the average unconfined compressive strength of dry and saturated shale was 62 and 33 MPa, respectively. The strength of mudstone for each condition was 11 and 4 MPa. When a rock became saturated, its strength decreased by 47% and 64% for shale and mudstone at average. In addition to saturation, a rock was in the microwave for 15 secs, its strength decreased into 49% for shale and 52% for mudstone. When a microwave oven operated up to 20 sec, a rock was crushed into several pieces and its temperature was approximately 200 degrees.
This paper investigates the strength characteristics and stress-strain behaviors of waste fishing net (WFN)-added lightweight soil. The lightweight soil, which consisted of dredged soil, crumb rubber, and cement, was reinforced with WFN in order to increase its shear strength. Glue treated WFN was also added to lightweight soil to improve the interlocking between the soil mixture and WFN. Three kinds of test specimens were prepared: unreinforced lightweight soil, reinforced lightweight soil without glue treatment, and reinforced lightweight soil with glue treatment. Several series of laboratory tests were carried out, including flow value tests, unconfined compression tests, and SEM analyses. From the experimental results, it was found that the peak strength of the reinforced lightweight soil with glue treatment was increased by the increased interlocking between the soil mixture and WFN, which was induced from the bonding effect. The stress-strain relation of the reinforced lightweight soil, irrespective of the glue treatment, showed a more ductile behavior than that of the unreinforced lightweight soil.
The primary aim of this study is to develop a three dimensional finite element (FE) model to predict the axial stress-strain relationship and ultimate strength of the FRP-wrapped UHPC columns by comparing experimental results. The reliability of four selected confinement models and three design codes such as ACI-440, CSA-S806-02, and ISIS CANADA is also evaluated in terms of agreement with the experimental results. Totally 6 unconfined and 36 different types of the FRP-wrapped UHPC columns are tested under monotonic axial compression. The values of ultimate strengths of FRP-wrapped UHPC columns obtained from the experimental results are compared and verified with finite element (FE) analysis results and the design codes mentioned above. The concrete damage plasticity model (CDPM) in Abaqus is utilized to represent the confined behavior of the UHPC. The results indicate that agreement between the test results and the non-linear FE analysis results is highly satisfactory. The CSA-S806-02 design code is considered more reliable than the ACI-440 and the ISIS CANADA design codes to calculate the ultimate strength of the FRP-wrapped UHPC columns. None of the selected confinement models that are developed for FRP-wrapped low and normal strength concrete columns can safely predict the ultimate strength of FRP-wrapped UHPC columns.

The results of PCPT(Pezocone Penetration Test) are widely used for the estimation of the undrained shear strength, for which the empirical cone factors($N_{kt}$, $N_{ke}$, $N_{{\Delta}u}$) need to be obtained at each site. In this study, the cone factors were estimated, for the soils at Bookmyun area in Changwon city, using the undrained shear strengths from the unconfined and UU triaxial compression tests. The parametric studies with plastic index and pore water pressure ratio were performed as well. $N_{kt}$, $N_{ke}$ and $N_{{\Delta}u}$ were estimated in the ranges of 8~40, 7~37, and 1~26 respectively. It was observed that there is a relationship between the cone factors, specially $N_{{\Delta}u}$, and the pore pressure ratio.
Resilient modulus tests were performed on five cohesive soils sampled from in -service subgrades and three cohesive soils compacted in the laboratory. It was concluded that in service resilient modulus can not be estimated from the resilient modulus of laboratory specimen compacted at same water content and dry density as in -service condition. The stress at 1 percent axial strain in unconfined compression tests ($Su_{1.0%}$) was found as a good indicator of the resilient modules ($M_R$), and the unique relationship between MR and $Su_{1.0%}$ was obtained. This relationship for the laboratory compacted soil is slightly different from that for the field compacted soil and the difference is less pronounced at the confining stress level expected to exist in subgrade. A proposed relationship itself is not affected by the changes in subgrade after construction and, therefore, it is applicable to as compacted and in service subgrade conditions.
