  • Ni-15at.% W coatings with film thicknesses of 20-40 ㎛ were electroplated on a steel substrate, and their oxidation behavior was investigated at 700 and 800℃ in air. For comparison, a pure Ni coating and a bulk Ni were also oxidized. The Ni-15at.%W coating displayed the worst oxidation resistance, due to the formation of less-protective NiO, Fe₂O₃, NiFe₂O₄ and NiWO₄. The corrosion behavior Ni-15at.%W coatings electroplated on a steel substrate was similarly investigated at 700 and 800℃ in the Ar-l%SO₂ atmosphere. For comparison, the uncoated steel substrate was also corrosion-tested in the Ar-l %SO₂ atmosphere. Severe scale spallation and the internal corrosion of the steel that occurred in the uncoated substrate were not observed in the coated specimen. However, it seemed that the Ni-15at.%W coating cannot be a potential candidate as a sulfidation-resistant coating, due to the formation of less-protective NiO, NiS, WO₃ and NiWO₄.

  • Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) coating was formed on AA1050 Al alloys by aerosol deposition (AD), and its electrochemical corrosion properties were investigated in 3.5 wt% NaCl and 0.5M $H_2SO_4$ solutions. The crack-free, dense, and ~5 ${\mu}m$ thick YSZ coating was successfully obtained by AD. The as-deposited coating was composed of cubic-YSZ nanocrystallites of ~10 nm size. The potentiodynamic test indicated that the YSZ coated Al alloy had much lower corrosion current densities (2 nA/$cm^2$) by comparison to uncoated sample and exhibited a passive behavior in anodic branch. Particularly, a pitting breakdown potential could not be identified in $H_2SO_4$. EIS tests revealed that the impedance of YSZ coated sample was ${\sim}10^6{\Omega}cm^2$ in NaCl and ${\sim}10^7{\Omega}cm^2$ in $H_2SO_4$, which was about 3 or 4 orders of magnitude higher than that of uncoated sample. Consequently, the corrosion resistance of Al alloy had been significantly enhanced by the YSZ coating.

  • This work was tamed out to apply a laser welding technique in joining between a Zn coated low carbon steel plate(SECC) and a free cutting carbon steel shaft(SUM24L) with or without W coating. Experiments were carried out and analysed by applying the FD(factorial design)method to obtain the optimum Laser welding condition. Optical microscopy, SEM, TEM and XRD analyses were performed in order to observe the microstructures in the fusion zone and the HAZ. Mechanical properties of the welded specimens were examined by microhardness test, tensile test and twist test. There was no flawed Zn in the fusion zone by EDS analysis. This means that during the welding process, Zn gas could be eliminated by appropriate shielding gas flow rate and butt welding gap. Ni coating itself did not influence on the tensile strength and hardness. However, twist bending strength and the weld depth of the Ni-coated free cutting carbon steel were lower as compared with those of the uncoated free cutting carbon steel. It was attributed to a lower absorbance of laser beam to the shin Ni surface. According to the results of the factorial design tests, the twist bending strength of welded specimens was primarily affected by pulse width, laser power, frequency and speed.

  • TiYN coated high speed steel tools have been developed and their tool lifes were assessed. First yttrium alloyed titanium target was manufactured, then using the arc ion plating(AIP) technique TiYN coating was deposited onto high speed steel substrate. Three kinds of varying thickness of TiYN coated tools were prepared. Cutting tests were carried out with theses tools and for comparison with the commercially available uncoated, TiN, TiCN and TiAlN coated tools. During the cutting tests flank wear width vs. cutting time was measured. It has been revealed that the newly developed TiYN coated tools show superior tool life characteristics to others.

  • Based on the experimental observation, the mathematical friction model, which is an essential information for analyzing the forming process of sheet metal, is developed considering lubricant viscosity, surface roughness and hardness, punch corner radius, and punch speed. By comparing the punch load found by FEM with a proposed friction model with experimental measurement when the coated and uncoated steel sheets are formed in 2-D geometry in dry and lubricant conditions, the validity and accuracy of the developed friction model are demonstrated.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of polymer- and rhodium-coated wires compared to uncoated wires by measuring the frictional forces using self-ligation brackets. Methods: 0.016-inch nickel titanium (NiTi) wires and $0.017{\times}0.025$-inch stainless steel (SS) wires were used, and the angulations between the brackets and wires were set to $0^{\circ}$, $5^{\circ}$, and $10^{\circ}$. Upper maxillary premolar brackets (Clippy-C$^{(R)}$) with a 0.022-inch slot were selected for the study and a tensile test was performed with a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. The maximum static frictional forces and kinetic frictional forces were recorded and compared. Results: The maximum static frictional forces and the kinetic frictional forces of coated wires were equal to or higher than those of the uncoated wires (p < 0.05). The maximum static frictional forces of rhodium-coated wires were significantly higher than those of polymercoated wires when the angulations between the brackets and wires were set to (i) $5^{\circ}$ in the 0.016-inch NiTi wires and (ii) all angulations in the $0.017{\times}0.025$-inch SS wires (p < 0.05). The kinetic frictional forces of rhodium-coated wires were higher than those of polymer-coated wires, except when the angulations were set to $0^{\circ}$ in the 0.016-inch NiTi wires (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Although the frictional forces of the coated wires with regards to aesthetics were equal to or greater than those of the uncoated wires, a study under similar conditions regarding the oral cavity is needed in order to establish the clinical implications.

  • The corrosion environments in a steel structure are significantly different depending on the individual parts of the members. To ensure the safety of weathering steel structures, it is important to evaluate the time-dependent corrosion behavior. Thus, the progress and effect of corrosion damage on weathering steel members should be evaluated; however, the predicted corrosion depth, which is affected by the corrosion environment, has not been sufficiently considered until now. In this study, the time-dependent thicknesses of the corrosion product layer were examined to quantifiably investigate and determine the corrosion depth of the corroded surface according to the exposure periods and corrosion environments. Thus, their atmospheric exposure tests were carried out for 4 years under different corrosion environments. The relationship between the thickness of the corrosion product layers and mean corrosion depth was examined based on the corrosion environment. Thus, the micro corrosion environments on the skyward and groundward surfaces of the specimens were monitored using atmospheric corrosion monitor sensors. In addition, the evaluated mean corrosion depth was calculated based on the thickness of the corrosion product layer in an atmospheric corrosion environment, and was verified through a comparison with the measured mean corrosion depth.

  • This paper examines the fire performance of uninsulated and uncoated restrained steel-concrete composite beams supplemented with externally prestressed strands through advanced numerical simulation. In this work, a sequentially coupled thermo-mechanical analysis is carried out using ABAQUS. This analysis utilizes a highly nonlinear three-dimensional finite element (FE) model that is specifically developed and validated using full-sized specimens tested in a companion fire testing program. The developed FE model accounts for nonlinearities arising from geometric features and material properties, as well as complexities resulting from prestressing systems, fire conditions, and mechanical loadings. Four factors are of interest to this work including effect of restraints (axial vs. rotational), degree of stiffness of restraints, the configuration of external prestressed tendons, and magnitude of applied loading. The outcome of this analysis demonstrates how the prestressing force in the external tendons is primarily governed by the magnitude of applied loading and experienced temperature level. Interestingly, these results also show that the stiffness of axial restraints has a minor influence on the failure of restrained and prestressed steel-concrete composite beams. When the axial restraint ratio does not exceed 0.5, the critical deflection of the composite beam is lower than that of the composite beam with a restraint ratio of 1.0.
