  • Considerable attention has been given to controller designs that utilize the variable structure system theory in order to achieve robust tracking performance of robotic manipulators subjected to parameter variations and extraneous disturbances. However, the theory has not had wide spread acceptance in practical control engineering community due mainly to the worry of chattering which is inherently ever-existing in the variable structure system. This paper presents a novel type of fuzzy-sliding mode controller to alleviate the chattering problem. A sliding mode controller for robust robot control is firstly synthesized with an assumption that the imposed system uncertainties satisfy matching conditions so that certain deterministic performances can parameters and control rules are obtained from a relation between predetermined sliding surfaces and representative points in the error state space. A two degree-of-freedom robotic manipulator subjected to a variable payload and a torque disturbance is considered in order to demonstrate superior tracking performance accrued from the proposed methodology.

  • This paper presents robust control performance of a direct current(DC) motor with brake system adopting a giant electrorheological(GER) fluid, whose distinguished feature is an extremely high value of yield stress. As a first step, Bingham characteristics of the GER fluid is experimentally investigated using the Couette type electroviscometer. A cylindrical type of ER brake is then devised based on the Bingham model, and its braking torque is evaluated. Structural analysis of ER break is performed using ANSYS. After formulating the governing equation of motion for the DC motor with ER brake system, a sliding mode control algorithm, which is very robust to external disturbances and parameter uncertainties, is synthesized and experimentally realized in order to achieve desired rotational speed trajectories. The tracking responses of the control system are then evaluated and verified by presenting speed control performance.

  • In this paper, we have analyzed the transient and steady state characteristics of buck type DC-DC converter using the sliding mode control method based upon VSS. This control method provides the easier analysis tool due to the time domain analysis and the acquirement of desired transient characteristics if the slope of the switching line is properly selected, and guarantees the robustness against parameter uncertainties and load disturbances. Also, it can achieve direct nonlinear control without linearizing approximation of state space averaging method. PSPICE simulation results are then presented verifying these concepts.

  • Position control of the electro-hydraulic servo indexing system in a flexible forging machine was investigated Flexible forging machine forges an axial type workpiece in the radial direction as well as in the axial direction. The role of the indexing system is to rotate a workpiece fast and accurately to a desired position for continuous shaping. Since the inertia of a workpiece changes during each forging step, a control technique which is robust to inertia variation should be adopted to the position control of the workpiece. In this study, time delayed control technique is applied to the servo system. Time delayed control method does not depend on estimation of specific parameters. Rather, it depends on the direct estimation of a function representing the effect of uncertainties. Direct estimation is accomplished using time delay and the gathered information is used to cancel the unknown dynamics is accomplished using disturbances simultaneously. Experimental result show that the time delayed controller is robust to inertia variation of the load, and satisfactory performance on the sposition accuracy is obtained compared to the contentional feedback control.

  • The objective of this paper is to propose a new velocity measurement method for an electro-mechanical fin actuator. The model of the electro-mechanical fin actuator includes uncertainties such as unknown disturbances and parameter variations in flight condition. So, an electro-mechanical fin actuator system needs robust control algorithm which requires not only position information but also velocity information. Usually, analog tachometers have been used for velocity feedback in an electro-mechanical fin actuator. However, using these types of sensors have problems such as the cost, space, and malfunction. These problems lead to propose a new velocity measurement method using linear type Hall-effect sensor. In order to verify the proposed method, several experiments are performed using Model Following Sliding Mode Controller(MFSMC). It is shown that the MFSMC with a new velocity measurement method using linear type Hall-effect sensor can satisfy the requirements without using of velocity sensor.

  • In this paper, a new discrete static output feedback variable structure controller based on a new dynamic-type sliding surface and output feedback discrete version of the disturbance observer is suggested for the control of uncertain linear systems. The reaching phase is completely removed by introducing a new proposed dynamic-type sliding surface. The output feedback discrete version of disturbance observer is derived for effective compensation of uncertainties and disturbance. A corresponding control with disturbance compensation is selected to guarantee the quasi sliding mode on the predetermined dynamic-type sliding surface for guaranteeing the designed output in the dynamic-type sliding surface from any initial condition for all the parameter variations and disturbances. Using Lyapunov function, the closed loop stability and the existence condition of the quasi sliding mode is proved. Finally, an illustrative example is presented to show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

  • The conventional sliding mode control (SMC) technique requires a priori knowledge of the upperbounds of disturbances and/or modeling uncertainties to assure robustness. This, however, may not be easy to obtain in practical situation. This paper presents a new methodology, a sliding mode control with disturbance estimator (SMCDE), which offers a robust control performance without a priori knowledge about the disturbance. The proposed technique is featured by an average value of the imposed disturbance over a certain period. A nonlinear spring-mass-damper system and a two-link robot system are adopted as illustrative application examples. Control performances such as estimation error and tracking error are compared between the proposed methodology and conventional scheme.

  • In this paper, a discrete-time robust current controller is proposed for PMSM drives. The structure of the proposed controller is quite simple and does not require high computational resource. The only difference of the proposed controller from the classical dead-beat controller is the integral term which can easily be implemented in a PMSM drive. The stability analysis of the proposed controller is performed accounting in parametric uncertainties, unmodelled dynamics and disturbances in the mathematical model. The boundedness of the dynamical system and asymptotic convergence of dq-axes currents to their reference values are provided under certain conditions. Various simulation and experimental studies are performed and the results taken at different operation conditions show the validity of the proposed controller.

  • In this paper, we design a new controller for an ultra-precision positioning system. In general, time optimal control enables to reach a target position faster than others. However it shows a weakness to chattering effect. In order to solve the problem, a new control algorithm based on sliding mode control is proposed. The suggested controller is composed of LQR control and sliding mode control. By performing some simulations, we prove that the proposed controller is more robust than time optimal control under the circumstance of parameter uncertainties and external disturbances.
