The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of unburned carbon (UBC) and NOx emissions for pulverized coal when air staging combustion is applied. A two-staged drop tube furnace capable of applying air staging combustion was designed and installed. The combustion of sub-bituminous (Tanito) has been investigated. UBC and the NOx concentration were measured under various temperatures and stoichiometric ratios in unstaged and staged combustion. As a result, UBC decreased and the NOx concentration increased with an increase in stoichiometric ratio and temperature. In particular, the NOx reduction mechanism was activated when the temperature in the fuel rich zone increased. Both UBC and the NOx concentration decreased as the temperature increased in the fuel rich zone. A high NOx reduction effect was obtained, compared to the UBC increase, when the air staging technique was applied.

This report presents a study of the development of an advanced coal nozzle used in burners to reduce unburned carbon (UBC) in a tangential coal-fired boiler. To understand the mechanism of UBC reduction, experiments using conventional burners were carried out to evaluate the effects of air injection velocity, coal fineness and over fired air (OFA) on combustion efficiency. It was confirmed that ignition of pulverized coal particles close to the burner is helpful toward the complete burn of residual carbon in fly ash. These efforts indicated the additional results that UBC was strongly dependent on the primary air velocity and coal fineness; especially that UBC dramatically decreased when the weight fraction of pulverized coal under $75{\mu}m$ was over 85 %. New coal nozzles, modified from conventional nozzles, were prepared and tested to improve the combustion efficiency. Some of these nozzles offered relatively lower unburned carbon than those of conventional burners and are referred to as HPFS (High Performance Flame Stability) coal nozzles.
Unburned Carbon(UBC) and NOx emissions from High-moisture coal and Dried coal were investigated in Drop Tube Furnace(DTF). When the same amount of the High-moisture coal and Dried coal were oxidized in DTF, the results show that UBC and NOx emissions of Dried coal case is higher than High-moisture coal case. As the moisture in coal decreases from 40% to 10%, the average gas temperature increases but the moisture concentration in DTF decreases. As the wall temperature increases from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1500^{\circ}C$, the UBC decreases and NOx emissions increases. Especially, the difference for UBC between High-moisture coal and Dried coal decreases with increasing wall temperature.
The most important and largest commercial outlet of fly ash in Korea is a replacement material of Portland cement in concrete industry. The high level of unburned carbon in ash brings about some malfunctions in concrete. Therefore, fly ash is refined to improve the quality as a concrete additive. In this process, a lot of the residual carbon is produced, and discarded now. In the present study, to find out a valuable outlet of the enriched carbon samples, the basic morphology of residual carbon in fly ash from Boryung power plant was investigated. The unburned carbon characterization included shape, size measurement, and chemical analysis was examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX).

Co-firing of biomass with coal is a promising combustion technology in a coal-fired power plant. However, it still requires verifications to apply co-firing in an actual boiler. In this study, data from the Thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and Drop tube furnace(DTF) were used to obtain the combustion characteristics of biomass when co-firing with coal. The combustion characteristics were verified using experimental results including reactivity from the TGA and Unburned carbon(UBC) data from the DTF. The experiment also analyzed with the variation of the biomass blending ratio and biomass particle size. It was determined that increasing the biomass blending ratio resulted in incomplete chemical reactions due to insufficient oxygen levels because of the rapid initial combustion characteristics of the biomass. Thus, the optimum blending condition of the biomass based on the results of this study was found to be 5 while oxygen enrichment reduced the increase of UBC that occurred during combustion of blended biomass and coal.

Increasing environmental pressures to reduce NOx emission are being placed on coal-fired boilers. To meet the environmental requirements, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd.(Doosan) has developed low NOx pulverized coal burner. Low NOx pulverized coal burner has already delivered, and it's combustion performance was evaluated to the NOx and Unburned Carbon(UBC) during the commissioning tests. The test results are shown that the strong relationship is existed between NOx and OFA flow rate, and also fuel-N fraction of coal has effected on NOx emission.

To meet the environmental requirements, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. (Doosan) had developed low NOx pulverized coal burner and it was applied to boiler retrofit project, 130 ton/hr coal fired cogeneration boiler, in 2003. NOx emissionand unburned carbon (UBC) in fly ash were measured during the commissioning tests. In this paper, the operation results of low NOx pulverized coal burner installed in 130 ton/hr coal fired boiler are presented. Burners emitted 160 ppm (@6 % $O_2$ basis) NOx and 3 % UBC with Chinacoal containing 0.86 % fuel nitrogen. And also it was shown that NOx emission rate of low NOx pulverized coal burner is linearly increased with fuel-nitrogen fraction of coal.
Fossil power plants firing lower grade coals or equipped with modified system for NOx controls are challenged with maintaining good combustion conditions while maximizing generation and minimizing emissions. In many cases significant derate, availability losses and increase in unburned carbon levels can be attributed to poor combustion conditions as a result of poorly controlled local fuel and air distribution within the boiler furnace. In order to develop a on-line combustion tuning system, field test was conducted at operating power boiler. During the field test the exhaust gases' $O_2$, NOx and CO was monitored by using a spatially distributed monitoring grid located in the boiler's high temperature vestibule and upper convective back-pass region. At these locations, the flue gas flow is still significantly stratified, and air in-leakage is minimal which enables tracing of poor combustion zones to specific burners and over-fire air ports. using these monitored information we can improving combustion at every point within the furnace, therefore the boiler can operate at reduced excess $O_2$ and gas temperature deviation, reduced furnace exit gas temperature levels while also reducing localized hot spots, corrosive gas conditions, slag or clinker formation and UBC. Benefits include improving efficiency, reducing NOx emissions, increasing output and maximizing availability. Discussion concerning the reduction of greenhouse gases is prevalent in the world. When taking a practical approach to addressing this problem, the best way and short-term solution to reduce greenhouse gases on coal-fired power plants is to improve efficiency. From this point of view the real time optimized combustion tuning approach is the most effective and implemented with minimal cost.

Combustion characteristics for co-firing of biomass (Walnut Shell) as blending fuel in coal fired boiler have investigated using thermogravimetric analyser (TGA) and drop tube reactor (DTR). The results show that devolatilization and char combustion for WS occurs at lower temperature than those of existing coals and has lower activation energy value, which is resulting in higher reactivity. When the WS is blended with coal, TGA results show linear profiles depending on blending ratio for each fuel. However, DTR results exist the non-additive phenomena for blending of WS. As blending ratio of WS increase, the UBC decrease at BBR 5%, but the UBC rather increase from BBR 10% due to oxygen deficiency formed from rapid combustion of WS. This paper propose that fuel lean condition by oxygen rich lead to higher blending ratio of biomass by solving the oxygen deficiency condition.
