  • Most of the loads in industrial power distribution systems are balanced and connected to three power systems. However, in the user power distribution systems, most of the loads are single & three phase and unbalanced, generating voltage unbalance. Voltage unbalance is a condition in a polyphase system in which the rms values of the line-to-line voltages or the phase angles between consecutive line-to-line voltages, are not all equal. Slight voltage unbalance generates a disproportionately high current unbalance at the motor stator winding. This paper presents a scheme on operation states of a three-phase induction motor under unbalanced voltages. The three-phase voltages applied to the stator winding of the studied induction motor are controlled by respectively adjusting the magnitude and phase angle of each phase. The voltage unbalanced factor(VUF) of the three-phase source voltages can then be varied to examine the different values of VUF on machine's operation characteristics.

  • Most of the loads in industrial power distribution systems are balanced and connected to three power systems. However, in the user power distribution systems, most of the loads are single & three phase and unbalanced, generating voltage unbalance. Rotating machines operating on an unbalanced voltage will draw a highly unbalanced current. As a result, the three-phase currents may differ considerably, thus resulting in an increased temperature rise in the machine. This paper presents a scheme on steady states of a three-phase induction motor under unbalanced voltages.

  • Most of the loads in industrial power distribution systems are usually balanced and connected to three power systems. However, in the user power distribution systems, partial loads are single & three phase and unbalanced, generating voltage unbalance by the impedance mismatching. Voltage unbalance has detrimental effects on three-phase induction motors, including over heating, line-current unbalance, derating, torque pulsation, low efficiency, etc. This paper presents a scheme on operation states of a three-phase induction motor under the unbalanced voltages with harmonics components. Three-phase voltages applied to the stator winding of the studied induction motor are controlled by respectively adjusting not only fundamental but also harmonics components. Harmonic components at the voltage unbalanced factor(VUF) of the three-phase source voltages can then be examined the different values of VUF on machine's operation characteristics.

  • Most of the low-voltage feeder are designed with approximately balanced and connected at the three phase four wire systems. However, Most of the power distribution systems' load which is composed of single or three phase are unbalanced by generating load unbalance. Unbalanced current will draw a highly unbalanced voltage. The power factor of an induction motor at rated operation is between 25 and 90%, depending on the size and speed of the motor. However, many induction motors operate below the nominal rating, resulting in poor power factor. This condition needs power factor improvement. Addition of power capacitor at the motor terminal may draw to stress due to voltage unbalance. This paper presents operation characteristics on steady states of a three-phase induction motor under unbalanced voltages with power capacitor. The existence of voltage unbalance have an effect on stress of power capacitor.

  • This paper described the unbalanced voltage on the tertiary bus of a single Phase auto transformer in the case of parallel operation with different manufacturer at each Phase. The unbalanced capacitances between primary to secondary winding, secondary to tertiary winding and primary to tertiary winding makes unbalanced bus voltage in the tertiary bus side. The unbalanced voltage let the surge arrester to operate in the power frequency range, and it causes the arrester to burn out. The failure of the arrester at one phase makes line to ground fault, which lead to the surge arrester failure of the other two phase on the tertiary bus.

  • This paper proposes a modified control strategy to improve the performance of three-phase four-leg shunt active power filters (APFs) for the compensation of three phase unbalanced loads. Unbalanced current cannot be obtained accurately by a harmonic detector due to the lower frequency. The proposed control strategy eliminates conventional harmonic detectors by directly regulating the source current. Therefore, the computational complexity is greatly reduced and the performance of the APF is improved. A mathematic model has been developed based on the source currents. The corresponding controllers have been designed based on the sinusoidal internal model principle. The proposed control strategy can guarantee excellent compensation performance and stable operation after an extreme disturbance such as a short circuit fault. In addition, the proposed technique can selectively compensate specific harmonics. A 50kVA prototype APF is implemented in the laboratory to validate the feasibility and performance of the proposed control strategy.

  • This paper investigates control algorithms for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) with back-to-back converter in medium-voltage wind power system under unbalanced grid conditions. Operation of DFIG under unbalanced grid conditions causes several problems such as overcurrent, unbalanced currents, active power pulsation and torque pulsation. Three different control algorithms to compensate for the unbalanced conditions have been investigated with respect to four performance factors; fault ride-through capability, efficiency, harmonic distortions and torque pulsation. The control algorithm having zero amplitude of negative sequence current shows the most cost-effective performance concerning fault ride-through capability and efficiency. The control algorithm for nullifying the oscillating component of the instantaneous active power generates least harmonic distortions. Combination of these two control algorithms depending on the operating requirements presents most optimized performance factors under the generalized unbalanced operating conditions.

  • This paper describes the effects of rotor eccentricity in squirrel cage induction machines. Asymmetric electro-magnetic force caused by the frictional worn bearing, rotor misalignment and unbalanced rotor etc. generates an asymmetrical operation, vibration and electro-magnetic noise. The need for detection of these rotor eccentricities has pushed the development of monitoring methods with increasing sensitivity and noise immunity. In this paper, we focus on investigating the asymmetrical operation considering of unbalanced magnetic pull in squirrel-cage induction motor with 380 [V], 7.5 [kW], 4P, 1,768 [rpm]. The effects of the non-symmetric rotor and magnetic force are simulated by finite element method (FEM) and tested using search coils for measuring the actual air-gap flux.

  • The parallel-feeding operation of an AC traction power supply system has the advantages of extending the power supply section and increasing the power supply capacity by reducing the voltage drop and peak demand caused by a train operation load. On the other hand, the parallel-feeding operation is restricted because of the circulating power flow induced from the phase difference between substations. Moreover, the power supply capacity is limited because of the unbalanced substation load depending on the trainload distribution, which can be changed by the train operation along the railway track. This paper suggests a Thyristor-controlled Phase Angle Regulator (TCPAR) to reduce the circulating power flow and the unbalanced substation load, which depends on the phase difference and the trainload distribution and provides a feasibility study. A dedicated control model of TCPAR is also provided, which uses substation power supplies as the input to control the circulating power flow and an unbalanced substation load depending on the phase difference and the trainload distribution. Simulation studies using PSCAD/EMTDC shows that the proposed TCPAR control model can reduce the circulating power flow and the unbalanced substation load depending on the phase difference and the trainload distribution. The proposed TCPAR can extend the parallel-feeding operation of an AC traction power system and increase the power supply capacity.
