  • The cationic biopolymer chitosan has several applications in medicine. Chitosan is the deacetylated derivative of chitin, the second most abundant naturally occurring polymer. Recent studies have investigated the relationship between chitosan and antibacterial activity. However, the molecular interactions and mechanisms have not been detailed. This study used molecular dynamics simulations to study interactions between chitosan and anionic bacterial membranes (POPE-POPG) and electrically neutral non-bacterial membranes (POPC). We calculated the free energy using umbrella sampling to compare the interactions between membranes and chitosan in different protonation states. Fully protonated chitosan interacted most strongly with the bacterial membranes, but weakly with non-bacterial membranes. These results suggest that electrostatic interactions are the main mechanism of the antibacterial activity of chitosan, and they provide insights into the design of novel antibacterial and antimicrobial agents.

  • Thrombin binding aptamter (TBA-15) is a 15-mer guanine-rich oligonucleotide. This DNA apamer specifically binds to the thrombin protein involved in blood coagulation. Using extensive umbrella sampling molecular dynamics simulation method at all atom level, we investigated the potential of mean force (PMF) upon pulling the DNA aptamer from the binding mode of aptamer/thrombin complex. From this calculation, the free energy cost for a full dissociation of this aptamer/protein complex is 17 kcal/mol, indicating a substantial binding affinity of TBA-15. Interestingly, this PMF reveals noticeable plateau regions along the pulling coordinate. Possible structural changes of this complex in the plateau were investigated in details.

  • For a few recent years, KECA(Korea Electrical Contractor Association) has promoted a project to establish an electrical construction specification called Master Spec. This paper analyses the characteristics of standards-making process of the Master Spec. as an umbrella technical standard in electrical construction industry in Korea. This paper argues that even if the Master Spec. is recognized to be technical standards, the standards-making process involves both technical and social practices when viewed from social construction theory and governance perspective. This aspect of social practices in technical standards making should be well understood because various stakeholders in terms of interests, resources, and motives try to influence the process positively and negatively. KECA in responsible for enactment of the Mater Spec. should be very thoughtful in building consensus first of all among electrical contractors, managing relationship with concerned government officials, and dealing with potential deviant groups as well as in pooling expertises and developing technical knowledge needed for designing technical specification.

  • This article discusses the deadlock in the WTO on multilateral harmonization of nonpreferential rules of origin (RoO) and reviews some of the RoO included in recent preferential trade agreements. We argue that there is a trend towards adoption of similar approaches and that this suggests that cooperation to reduce the trade-impeding effects of differences in RoO across jurisdictions is more feasible than often is assumed by observers and policymakers. From a trade facilitation perspective such cooperation could be based on plurilateral initiatives under the umbrella of the WTO. These could include a focus on pursuit of greater convergence between preferential and nonpreferential RoO helping to achieve the long-standing goal of moving towards harmonization of rules of origin.

  • In this paper, a windmill type ultrasonic motor operated by single-Phase AC electric field was fabricated, and then torque characteristics were investigated. A metal-ceramic composite component was used as the stator\`s vibrator to generate ultrasonic vibrations. The windmill type ultrasonic motors has only three components; a stator element with two wind-mill shape slotted metal endcaps, a rotor and a bearing. In this parer we measured torque, when stator\`s slot was changed Iron 4, 6, 8. Brass metal was pressed with umbrella-type using metal molt then slot of 3 kind was manufactured. The maximum revolution speed was 388(rpm) in the case of a small ultrasonic motor of 11.35 mm diameter, 8 slot and 1.01 mm thickness. The maximum torque of 0.17 mNm was obtained at a speed of 131 rpm.

  • It is difficult to accurately extract features of pedestrian because the pedestrian is photographed at a crosswalk using a camera positioned higher than the pedestrian. In addition, it is more difficult to extract features when a part of the pedestrian's body is covered by an umbrella or parasol or when the pedestrian is holding an object. Representative methods to solve this problem include Object Detection, Instance Segmentation, and Pose Estimation. Among them, this study intends to use the Pose Estimation method. In particular, we intend to increase the recognition rate of pedestrians in crosswalks by maintaining the image resolution through HigherHRNet and applying the foot estimation technique. Finally, we show the superiority of the proposed method by applying and analyzing several data sets covered by body parts to the existing method and the proposed method.

  • Recently, digital health has gained the attention of physicians, patients, and healthcare industries. Digital health, a broad umbrella term, can be defined as an emerging health area that uses brand new digital or medical technologies involving genomics, big data, wearables, mobile applications, and artificial intelligence. Digital health has been highlighted as a way of realizing precision medicine, and in addition is expected to become synonymous with health itself with the rapid digitization of all health-related data. In this article, we first define digital health by reviewing the diverse range of definitions among academia and government agencies. Based on these definitions, we then review the current status of digital health, mainly in Korea, suggest points that are missing from the discussion or ought to be added, and provide future directions of digital health in clinical practice by pointing out certain key points.

  • Positional Release Techniques (PRTs) are an umbrella term for manual therapies harnessing spontaneous musculoskeletal balancing mechanism of the body facilitated by finding and maintaining therapeutic position. PRT has its origin in the Strain Counterstrain (SCS) technique by Dr. Jones but encompasses diverse related techniques that stemmed off from the SCS. PRT emphasizes postural balance within the body and innate healing potential of the body including the postural balance of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This study briefly reviews concepts, history, and contemporary study reports on PRT with a focus on the yin-yang balance based approach of PRT.

  • The government of Indonesia has initiated the Master Plan of National Research (RIRN) 2017-2045 as a policy umbrella of national research activity. The initiative has been in place since 2015, yet the process required a long period of coordination. And with the extensive movement of evidence-based policymaking (EBPM), there has been a call of expectation towards policymakers to accurately use scientific evidence in their policymaking process. However, the complexity of policymaking process renders the ideal notion of EBPM questionable. This research attempts to understand how the EBPM as an idea can shape the interactions of actors in the policymaking process by using the discursive institutionalism as the analytical framework. By conducting ten interviews with actors involved in the making of RIRN and close examination of the policy documents for content analysis, this research describes the institutional features of EBPM discourse in Indonesia, which are reflected in the interactions of policy actors in the policymaking process of RIRN. This research also offers descriptive and learning narratives on the role of discourse in the policymaking process.
