  • Methods: It was studied on the 47 kinds of oriental medical literature for fecal blood. Results: Fecal blood means bleeding with faces from anus and indicates all the three cases such as blooding before and after evacuation, evacuation of feces mixed with blood, and simple melena. The main causes are fire(火) and deficiency of spleen qi (脾氣虛). According to the color of fecal blood and the region of the bleeding, first, if the blood color is dark-red and blood discharges after emptying the bowels, it is called deposited poison into Jang(臟毒) or distant bleeding(遠血), and if the color of blood is clear and bowel emptying occurs after bleeding, it is bloody stool due to intestinal wind(腸風) or nearby bleeding(近血). For treating methods(治法). removing heat from the blood and stopping bleeding(淸熱凉血止血), removing dampness and stopping bleeding(淸熱除濕止血), invigorating Ki for promoting Hul-controJ(益氣攝血), warming the spleen and stomach to dispel cold and stopping bleeding(溫中散寒止血) etc are applied. As for the treating prescriptionl(治法), a Hwangtotang(黃土湯). Jeoksodudanggwitang(赤小豆當歸散). Gwihwasan(槐花散). Wipungtang(胃風湯). Hwangnyeonhwan modifying(黃連丸加減). Samultang modifying(四物湯加減). Paedoksan modifying(敗毒散加減) etc are used. As for acupuncture and moxibustion(鍼灸療法). if etiology(病因) is damp-heat(濕熱), acupuncture(刺鍼) at Janggang(長强); Charyo(BL 32); Sangeoheo(ST 37)(上巨虛); Seungsan(BL 57)(承山穴), and in case of deficiency of spleen Gi(脾氣虛), acupunture(刺鍼) with tonification(補法) at I Baek(EX-UE 2)(二白); Gwanwon(CC 4)(關元); Joksamni(ST 36)(足三里) Taebaek(SP 3)(太白); Hoeeum(CC 1)(會陰穴), or mxibuston(灸) at Baekoe(GC 2O)(百會); Myeongmun9GC (命門) or the point of opposite to umbilicus among spinal vertebrae(脊中對臍穴) are used. The external treatment(外治療法) was consisted of plastering umbilicus therapy(敷臍法) and enema therapy(灌腸法).

  • In recent years there has been a growing interest in total body irradiation. For refractory leukemia or lymphoma patients, varions techniques and dose regimens were intridused, including high dose total body irradiation for destruction of leukemic or bone marrow cells and immunosupperression prior to bone marrow transplantation. Accurate provision for specified dose and the desired homogeneity are essential before clinical total body irradiatio. When performed in total body irradiation, the problem obtain uniform uniform dose distribution in brain, neck, lung, umbilicus, pelvis and leg. Authors compared to dose distribution with method 1 and method 1. The method 1 used compensationg filters for homogeneous dose distribution(Minesota University Method). The method 2 used fixing frame made in acryl developing authors. Results were following 1. Method 1 was showed dose distribution from 95.6% to 100%, method 2 showed dose distribution from 95.4% to 100% 2. Method 2 was showed different to 3.4% at skin region and midline in the brain. In the neck, showed different to 1.5%. In the umbilicus, showed different to 2.3%.

  • Total Body Irradiation(TBI) is one of the essential treatment modalities in bone marrow transplantation for leukemia and lymphoma. Various techniques and dose regimens were introduced with sevelal advantages and disadvantages. In TBI, lung block could reduce lung dose to 75% of original beam for decreasing lung dose with homogenous total body irradiation. Accurate provision for specified dose and the desired homogeneity are essential before clinical total body irradiation. When performed in total body irradiation, the problem obtain uniform dose distribution in brain, neck, lung, umbilicus, pelvis and leg. • The most common abnormality of the umbilicus in the foal is the patent urachus. Patent urachus may be a congenital or acquired condition in foals in which the urachus fails to close spontaneously at or shortly after parturition. A 17-day-old male Thoroughbred foal was requested to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of Cheju National University. The foal showed clinical signs such as umbilical urination, anorexia, depression, lethargy, and abdominal pain for 10 days. Because of the umbilical urination, the surgery for patent urachus was performed, but he died next day. Grossly, many pale yellowish foci 10-20 mm in diameter were scattered on the throughout surface of lungs. Severe subcapsular hemorrhage was observed in left kidney. Large milky yellow mass 10X6-7 cm in size was found in the adjacent area of right kidney. Histopathologically, many abscesses with bacterial cocci were scattered in the blood vessels or adjacent pulmonary parenchyma of lungs. Severe numerous abscesses with intralesional bacterial cocci were mostly occupied in the abdominal mass from right kidney. Gram staining for tissue sections demonstrated numerous Gram positive cocci in pulmonary and abdominal abscesses. In bacterial culture, catalase-positive beta-hemolytic colonies were isolated and confirmed as Staphylococcus (S.) aureus by Vitek system. Based on the results, acquired patent urachus and then multiple abscesses may be originated from the umbilical cord infected with S. aureus in this foal.

  • Hyperemesis gravidarum is one of the most common symptom in the early pregnancy and if it cause severe malnutrition by means of heavy vomiting as a basic sign of disease of pregnant syndrome, appropriate treatments are necessary. In the clinics the methods of treatment of hyperemesis gravidarum include herb-medication usually. But herb-medication therapy is rather difficult because during pregnancy it may cause vomiting by the smell and taste of herbs. So the author investigated the literatures referred to the external treatments of hyperemesis gravidarum excluding herb-medication and the results obtained here were as follows. 1. The external methods of treatment of hyperemesis gravidarum are various and include moxibustion, the method of applying drug at the umbilicus, ear-acupuncture method, pressure massage therapy, naso-spray method, acupoint injection, intervenous injection 2. Among the external methods of treatment of hyperemesis gravidarum , the method of applying drug at the umbilicus is most variable and almost all prescriptions use Zingiber officinalis Rose, characteristically. 3. Ear-pressure massage method to treat the hyperemesis gravidarum uses the car-acupoints of Gan, We, Shin-mun, Gyo-gam. 4. Among the external methods of treatment of hyperemesis gravidarum , moxibustion, pressure massage, and acupoint injection select frequently Nae-gwan(PC6), Chok-samni(ST36) and Chung-wan(CV12). 5. In the both the internal and external methods of treatment of hyperemesis gravidarum one have to differentiate syndromes in the viewpoint of oriental medicine and treat with the principls of treatment and prescriptions which are fit to each differentiation model under the principle of regulating the stomach and relieving vomiting.

  • Objective : This clinical study investigated the effect of Yeosindan on dystocia caused by abnormal expulsive forces. Methods : Yeosindan was applied on the umbilicus of a primipara who had gone through latent phase for 15hrs and was almost expected to undergo C-sec by dystocia. It was sealed with an plaster. Yeosindan was removed immediately after the delivery. Results : 1. 90 minutes after Yeosindan had been applied on the umbilicus of the primipara, the active phase dilatation of uterus was started normally. 2. After 190 minutes from the Yeosindan application, the 2nd stage of labor was finished. 3. In this case, the delivery time, of which average is 344 minutes from the active phase to the second stage of labor, was reduced by 244 minutes. 4. So far, no abnormal condition has been detected in both the neonates and the primiparas.

  • In "The region of the body in which abdomen pain manifests(腹痛有部分)" of "Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)", the abdomen is divided into the upper abdomen(大腹), umbilicus area(臍腹) and lower abdomen(小腹), which are in turn assigned to 3 Yins of greater yin(太陰), lesser yin(少陰) and reverting yin(厥陰) respectively to explain the causes and treatments of abdomen pain according to their locations. Meanwhile, the present Korean medicine tends to issue herbal formula without considering the cause of regional abdomen pain and the aspect of cold and heat(寒熱), deficiency and excess(虛實) in the symptom. This fragmentary treatment may bring out a serious failure. For the correction of this problem, the literature study on "The region of the body in which abdomen pain manifests(腹痛有部 分)" of "Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)" was carried out to obtain the following conclusions. In "The region of the body in which abdomen pain manifest (腹痛有部分)" of "Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)", it turned out that the use of herbal formula for the abdomen pain was the integrated one of herbal formulas for the abdomen pain in the external contraction such as cold damage yin condition(傷寒陰證) and cold in the middle condition(中寒證) and that the cause of abdomen pain was the explanation of diverse internal causes for the abdomen pain. And it was also found that the assignment of the upper abdomen(大腹), umbilicus area(臍腹) and lower abdomen(小腹) to 3 Yins had the locational and meridian meanings of 3 Yins according to internal causes and external contraction to get the basis of abdomen pain treatment in dividing it into 3 Yins.

  • In examinations of the stomach roentgenography, it is imperative to obtain adequate film density throughout all its different regions. Therefore, it is necessary to use more sophiscated exposure techniques. In order to achieve these purpose, the radiologic technologists must be measured abdominal thickness in variations with patient positions. In consideration of these problem, the author was made an experiment on correction method of kVp and mAs by abdominal thickness in roentgenography of the stomach. The results were summarized as follws: 1. When the patient in erect position, abdominal thickness was the most thickened at the level of 3cm inferior to umbilicus without regard to body habitus and it was the most thickened at the level of 3cm superior to umbilicus in prone and supine position. 2. As a result of measuring film density for stomach, the adequate film density was represented from 0.70 to 2.49 in erect position and $0.28{\sim}1.18$ in supine position, $0.5{\sim}2.45$ in prone position. 3. In order to obtain uniform film density in 1.25, the correction factor for kVp by abdominal thickness was represented average ${\pm}4.5kVp\;per\;{\pm}1cm$ in a fixed 50 mAs, and average ${\pm}3.9kVp\;per\;{\pm}1cm$ in a fixed 100mAs. 4. In order to obtain uniform film density in 1.25, the correction factor for mAs by abdominal thickness was represented average ${\pm}30.9%\;per\;{\pm}1cm$ in a fixed 80 kvp and ${\pm}26.9%\;per\;{\pm}1cm$ in a fixed 100kVp.

  • This study was designed to examine the therapeutic effect of Italian honeybee (Apis mellifera) venom in piglets with bacterial diarrhea. Preweaning piglets were assigned to treated and nontreated control groups. In treated group, 47 piglets were given natural honeybee venom once a day for 3 consecutive days. The natural honeybees were stung acupoints of GV-1 (Jiao-Chao, at the indentation between the base of tail and the anus) and ST-25 (Hai-men, about 1 cm lateral to the umbilicus). In control group, 44 piglets were intramuscularly injected with a standard dosage of colistin sulfate (300,000 IU/kg of body weight) and antid-iarrheal drug (berberine, 2 ml/kg) once a day for 3 consecutive days. At post-treatment, 90.9% of control piglets and 93.6 % of piglets in treated group recovered from bacterial diarrhea. Bee acupuncture therapy did not show in piglets without any side effects such as allergy, intoxication, hemorrhage, or infection. It might be concluded that honeybee venom therapy was effective in controlling of piglets with bacterial diarrhea.
