  • Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light is often associated with skin damage, sometimes very serious, and in recent times has received particular attention as a health risk. As a result, the proper use of sunscreen has long been recommended to protect against skin damage. The continued increase in the use of sunscreen may be linked to increased information about the risk of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays. Natural and harmless materials that block and prevent UV light have emerged as essential household items in the field of skin beauty. New materials need to be considered and evaluated in relation to ultraviolet rays and their harmful effects. This study aims to explain the effect of UV exposure on human skin, the classification of sunscreens, the application of zeolite, nano clay, and LDH in sunscreen formulations, as well as the regulation of this service in various countries around the world.

  • Generally, $TiO_2$ powders absorb ultraviolet rays and make oxidation/reduction reactions on its surface. Hydroxide radical(OH), a product of photocatalyst reactions, has so strong oxidation/reduction electric potential that it can oxidize noxious gas like VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) and NOx. In this study, $TiO_2$ was substituted for exposed concrete to investigate the purifying degree of VOCs(Benzene, Toluene) and NOx. Anatase types of $TiO_2$ were used as photocatalyst. The sun rays and the ultraviolet were used as a light source. Anatase type $TiO_2$ was better than rutile type in purifying performance. The sunray showed the best purifying performance among the light sources. $3\%$ substitution of $TiO_2$ with the sunray was enough to purify VOCs(Benzene, Toluene) and NOx efficiently.

  • A polarizing spectacle lens having a perfect blocking of ultraviolet light and a partial blocking of blue light and having photochromic properties has been developed. It is a functional spectacle lens which can be used as a spectacle lens in the daytime, which plays a role of sunglass in a space with strong ultraviolet rays, dramatically reducing glare caused by late-night driving or reflected light. Photochromism was recovered in 0.5 second dark reaction and 3 seconds recovery time. The polarization function was about 95%. Ultraviolet rays were completely blocked and blue light was reduced by about 30%. A lens that combines photochromic and UV blocking and polarization functions is the first attempt at investigating the domestic market.

  • The effects that ultraviolet rays elicit on collagen synthesis and degradation are the most common causes of wrinkle formation and photo-aging in skin. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of Angelica acutiloba root ethanol extract (AAEE) to promote collagen synthesis and inhibit collagen degradation in human dermal fibroblasts. By examining total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, electron donating ability, radical scavenging activity, and superoxide dismutase-like activity, we found that AAEE exhibited fairly good antioxidant activity. Treatment with AAEE significantly increased type I procollagen production by cultured fibroblasts, as well as reduced ultraviolet-induced matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) expression and MMP-2 activity in a dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05). In addition, AAEE significantly increased TIMP-1 mRNA expression (p < 0.05), although without an associated dose-dependent increase in TIMP-1 protein expression. In summary, we suggest that AAEE may be a potentially effective agent for the prevention or alleviation of skin-wrinkle formation induced by ultraviolet rays.

  • Not only the insulating oil used for extra high voltage and high capacity transformer has a lot of possibilites of a corona discharge in oil, but the oil is easily degraded by a response of light oxidization. This study is either to classfy, with priority given to a transformer oil produced in Korea belonging to, the insulating oil No. 2, the sample irradiated the ultraviolet rays, treated a corona discharge in oil by a high voltage DC source and done nothing, or to measure the characteristics of breakdown, V-i, I-t and electrode material. The obtained results can be summarized as followings: (1) Unless the sample is contacted with the air, on the process to irradiate the ultraviolet rays, the sample less influence on the changes of the electric characteristics. At the same time, if the sample is contacted with the air and irradiated the ultraviolet rays, the sample shows a remarkable changes of the electric characteristics, and a declined breakdown strength. This tells us that the influence of the light irradiation must be considered as a primary factor of degrading the insulating oil. (2) In the oil treated by a corona discharge, breakdown voltage is declined more than in the oil not to be treated with it. This means that the degradation of the insulating oil is getting increased by a corona discharge in oil. (3) It shows that the increase of conducting current has little to do with breakdown voltage. (4) The conducting current depending on the electrode materials can be put in order by value as Al>Cu>Fe. This is due to the differences of the work function of each metals, and an chemical reaction with the insulating oil. These result can be a great help in verifying the degradation progress of the insulating oil and furnish a new technical information to the manufacturers of the insulating oil and electrical equipment designers and operators. Besides, this study would be helpful to improve the electrical characteristics of the insulating oil produced in Korea.

  • The effects were examined from several conditions of $TiO_2$ photocatalysis reaction to phenols degradation by changing it's reacting conditions such as phenol concentration, pH, $TiO_2$ concentration, $H_2O_2$ concentration, flow rate, and intensity of ultraviolet rays. Phenol degradation was more efficient in low concentration of phenol, neutral pH. Phenol degradation appeared to increase as concentration of $TiO_2$ photocatalyst, that of $H_2O_2$ and intensity of ultraviolet rays increased. As $TiO_2$ dosage increased, initial rate constant k linearly increased. When $H_2O_2$ was injected more than optimum, phenol removal rate didn't increase in proportional to the change of $H_2O_2$ concentration as OH radicals was being consumed. When flow rate is less than $4.75m^3/m^2$ day, phenol removal efficiency appeared to decrease as ultraviolet rays transmission rate becomes low by $TiO_2$ suspension coated in photo reaction column. Meanwhile, initial rate constant according to light intensity change in less than $25mW/cm^2$ appeared to be in proportion to light intensity ($mW/cm^2$) Removal efficiency decreased about 12% after 180 minutes of reaction time while showed stable removal efficiency of 100% after 300 minutes when using regenerated $TiO_2$.

  • Light can be divided into ultraviolet rays, visible rays, and infrared rays depending on the wavelengths. Visible rays with specific wavelength are those predominantly used for would treatment. Especially low level laser irradiates into cells, effectively stimulating cellular tissues and activating cellular function. This study was intended to verify the effect of white LED irradiation therapy on wound recovery in animal tests by applying white LED irradiator, which was independently designed and developed to emit beams of similar wavelength to that of a laser. The designed LED Irradiator was used to find out how white LED light source affected the skin wound of SD-Rat(Sprague-Dawley Rat). We divided the participants into two groups; white LED irradiation group which was irradiated 1 hour a day for 9 consecutive days, and none irradiation group. The results showed that the study group had lower incidence of inflammation and faster recovery, compared with the control group.
