  • Borate nonlinear optical crystals have been used as frequency conversion devices in many fields due to their unique transparency and nonlinearity from ultraviolet to visible spectral range. In this study, we theoretically and numerically investigate the properties of broadband second harmonic generation (SHG) in the recently reported Pna21-Ba3Mg3(BO3)3F3 (BMBF) crystal. The technique is based on the simultaneous achievement of birefringence phase matching and group velocity matching between interacting waves. We discussed all factors required for broadband SHG in the BMBF in terms of two types of phase matching and group velocity matching conditions, the beam propagation direction and the corresponding effective nonlinearity and spatial walk-off, and the spectral responses. The results show that bandwidths calculated in the broadband SHG scheme are 220.90 nm (for Type I) and 165.85 nm (for Type II) in full-width-half-maximum (FWHM). The central wavelength in each case is 2047.76 nm for Type I and 1828.66 nm for Type II at room temperature. The results were compared with the non-broadband scheme at the telecom C-band.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the removal effects of the color, nutritive salts and other pollutants on piggery slurry by advanced oxidation process (AOP) system. The experimental AOP system was designed to treat 300 L of piggery slurry per hour. To enhance oxidizing power of the experimental APO system, a ultraviolet irradiation system and the ultrasonic system were attached to the AOP system. With 5 min ultrasonic treatment, COD, SS and T-N concentrations were changed from 210, 820, and 309 to 200, 760, and 262 mg/L, respectively. With 10 min ultrasonic treatment, SS and T-N concentrations tended to decrease but T-P concentration was not changed. With the treatment of both ozone and ultrasonic waves for 30 min, COD, SS, T-N and T-P decreased from 238, 900, 400, and 5 to 165, 540, 263, and 4 mg/L, respectively. With the treatment of both ozone and ultraviolet irradiation for 30 min, COD, SS, T-N and T-P decreased from 321, 340, 204, and 15 to 151, 140, 111, and 7 mg/L, respectively, and color was changed from 4,344 to 624.

  • In this study, the development of the room temperature curable silica-based coating compositions for anticorrosive and antifouling performance in marine environments was carried out. The marine (plant) structures with many exposed parts are operated in harsh marine environments such as strong ultraviolet rays, extreme temperature differences and salt water corrosion. Organic paints that are easily degraded under these environments and easily eroded by physical stimuli such as waves can not play a role properly. Dense ceramic coatings on marine structures provide careful protections even in saltwater environments due to their high hardness and rust resistance. Therefore, in the case of ceramic coatings, their use and application range in marine structures can be greatly improved due to their functional advantages. In the present study, silica-based coating compositions based on colloidal silica with silane coupling agents, curing salts, and ceramic fillers were developed, and their applications as protective coatings for corrosion protection and fouling prevention in seawater were also studied.

  • Conventional imaging techniques such as ultraviolet, infrared, and X-ray are used mainly to diagnose the damaged parts of the painted cultural assets in Korea. These techniques, however, have limits in diagnosing damages of interlayer parts. We have performed and extensive study on the applicability of Terahertz(THz) analysis technique, introduced recently to this field of study on cultural properties in Korea, to diagnose painted cultural assets. The specimens, produced to imitate the damage types of Korean painted properties, were analyzed over their painting, supporting, and backing layers by terahertz pulse imaging technique. The analyzed results provided information about the cracks, the separated areas, and the separated distances between layers on the specimens. Our research, then, was extended to real painted cultural remains, Birojana Sam-shin Gwebul-do at Bongseon Temple in Namyang-ju, Korea National Treasure Number 1792, through which we have obtained 3D information about the extent and pattern of damages to the asset. These results demonstrate that terahertz 3D imaging technique has the capability of noncontact 3D diagnosis on painted cultural properties.
