  • Pulse echo techniques have been used for the conventional medical ultrasound imaging systems. However, their resolution is limited in the transmitted signal power. To overcome this limit, pulse compression method used in the radar systems was proposed. This system transmits a continuous coded signal and then compresses the received signal into the short and high resolution pulse by using correlator. The reflectors can be detected by cross-correlation between the transmitted signal and the received signal with the depth information. In this paper, we will present a comparative study of the performances of the most common sequences(pseudo-chirp, m-sequences, modified Golay code). The best result for improving resolution is obtained with the modified Golay Code.

  • For the patients with bladder dysfunction, measurement of urine volume inside the bladder is very critical to avoid bladder failure. In measuring urine volume inside a bladder, low-resolution 3D ultrasound images are widely used. However, urine volume estimation from 3D ultrasound images is prone to big errors and inconsistency because of low spatial resolution and low signal-to-noise ratio of ultrasound images. We developed a new robust volume estimation algorithm which is not computationally expensive. We tested the algorithm on a lab-built ultrasound bladder phantom and volunteers. The average error rate of the human bladder volume estimation was 5.9% which was better than the commercial machine.

  • To diagnose a patient's blood vessel disease, apoplexy, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, the blood velocity is very important. Determining the blood velocity methods using ultrasound are Continuous Doppler System and Pulse Doppler System. In using the Pulse Doppler System, we can obtain the position of blood velocity. But it is more complex hardware than Continuous Doppler System and it has low SNR(signal-noise ratio). So in this study, to obtain a believable information we use the Continuous Pulse Doppler System. Thus system have analog part and digital part. In analog part is composed of ultrasound generating part, the amplifying part to amplify the received signal from ultrasound sensor, the demodulation part to detect blood velocity and the filtering part to remove the noise. In digital part is composed of the A/D conversion part, digital signal processing part, and the communication part to communicate the PC. In this study to implement efficient ultrasound blood velocity measurement system, we can get the patient's blood velocity information in realtime. Thus, It is a useful in the accurate diagnosis with C.T(computered tomography), M.R.I(magnetic resonance imaging).

  • In medical ultrasound imaging systems, Side lobes may appear if signals outside the imaging point are not completely removed during receive focusing. If the time signal of the side lobe overlaps with the time signal (main lobe) from the image point, it is difficult to completely remove it using filter processing in the time domain. However, In the receive focusing process, when time-channel signals are Fourier-transformed, the main lobe and side lobe signals are spatially separated in the spectral domain. Therefore, the side lobes can be suppressed by multiplying the image with magnitude weights, which are determined by the magnitudes of the main and side lobes calculated in the spectral domain. In addition, when the main lobe and the side lobe spectrum are adjacent, the distance weight was applied based on the distance between them. In a 5 MHz ultrasound imaging system using a 64-channel linear transducer, point reflector and speckle images with cysts of various brightness were synthesized and weights were applied to the ultrasound image. Using computer simulations, we confirmed that the side lobes were greatly reduced without affecting the spatial resolution in the point reflector image, and the contrast was significantly improved in the cyst image with computer simulations.

  • The high-intensity focused ultrasound device intermittently operates abnormally due to communication signal interference between the devices during use due to the high frequency radiated during the skin treatment procedure. Communication interference between multi-frequency ultrasound devices can be reduced through CAN communication controller and transceiver design, firmware S/W program and CAN communication module development.

  • A harmonic quadrature demodulation method to extract the second harmonic component from focused ultrasound signals after a single transmit-receive event is proposed. In the proposed method, the focused ultrasound signal is converted into baseband inphase and quadrature components by multiplying with sine and cosine signals both having twice the center frequency of the transmitted signal and filtering the two modulated signals. The quadrature component is then passed through a Hilbert filter to be added to the inphase component, which leaves only the envelope of the second harmonic component. A novel phase estimation technique is employed in the proposed method to avoid the phase mismatch between the focused signal and the two modulating signals. The proposed method is verified through both theoretical analysis and computer simulations. It is shown that compared to the pulse inversion scheme the proposed method provides almost the same results for stationary targets and significantly improved harmonic to fundamental ratio for moving targets.

  • An ultrasonic bone densitometer has been developed by measuring speed of sound signal transmitted and received on the skin, not through the horizontal axis but through the vertical one in tissue. The SOS(speed of sound) method measuring the time difference between the ultrasound signals reflected from the both sides of surface of bone could produce more precise result compared with the BUA(broadband ultrasound attenuation) method measuring the frequency difference. Middle finger is selected to be the best measurement position in order to increase the accuracy, after due consideration that the thickness of flesh at the down part of thumb shows too much variation although the ratio of the receiving signal is higher than the other fingers. The measured value by using SOS method shows almost the same result as compared with the conventional DEXA method.

  • Respiration measurement method using an ultrasound sensor is influenced very little by an error of inertia and pressure. This device measures the amount and flow of respiration using a delivery speed difference of the ultrasound waves that are a return format by the pneumatic stream that is a flogging of ultrasound waves during transmission and receipt as having used a characteristic of ultrasound waves. This paper examines improving the sensor's sensitivity during transmission and receipt of the signal. Because the measurement must be performed on patients, clinicians need to be sure that it is accurately measuring even very weak breathing.

  • Although various ophthalmic imaging methods, including fundus photography and optical coherence tomography, have been applied for effective diagnosis of ocular diseases with high spatial resolution, most of them are limited by shallow imaging penetration depth and a narrow field of view. Also, many of those imaging modalities are optimized to provide microscopic anatomical information, while functional or cellular information is lacking. Compared to other ocular imaging modalities, photoacoustic imaging can achieve relatively deep penetration depth and provide more detailed functional and cellular data based on photoacoustic signal generation from endogenous contrast agents such as hemoglobin and melanin. In this paper, array-based ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging was demonstrated to visualize pigmentation in the eye as well as overall ocular structure. Fresh porcine eyes were visualized using a real-time ultrasound micro-imaging system and an imaging probe supporting laser pulse delivery. In addition, limited photoacoustic imaging field of view was improved by an imaging probe tilting method, enabling visualization of most regions of the retina covered in the ultrasound imaging.

  • The respiration measurement method using the ultrasound sensor hardly gets an influence of an error of inertia and pressure and it is a respiratory detection device available semi-permanently. This device measures the amount and flow of respiration through using a delivery speed difference of the ultrasound waves that are a return format by the pneumatic stream that is a flogging of ultrasound waves during transmission and receipt as having used a characteristic of ultrasound waves. In this paper, it improved sensitivity of a signal to happen during transmission and receipt of a sensor because measurement must be performed with a patient to the center and measurement was played in a weak breathing so that it was possible.
