  • The purpose of this study is to develop a new method of producing tienchi seng (notoginseng, Panax notoginseng) extracts featuring high concentrations of the ginsenoside Rg3, Rg5, and Rg6, special components of Korean red ginseng. The chemical transformation from ginseng saponin glycosides to prosapogenin was analyzed by HPLC. Tienchi seng was heat-processed at 100℃ and the optimum conditions were identified. The highest concentrations of total saponin (29.723%) and the ginsenoside Rg3 (1.769%), Rg5 (5.979%), and Rg6 (13.473%) were produced at 48 hours. Also, when tienchi seng was subjected to the ultrasonic thermal fusion (100℃) process, the concentrations of total saponin (30.578%), ginsenoside Rg3 (2.392%), Rg5 (6.614%), and Rg6 (13.017%) were highest at 36 hours. On the other hand, the 2-hour heat-processed extract and 2-hour ultrasonic thermal fusion-processed extract did not contain ginsenoside Rg3, Rg5, and Rg6. The ultrasonic thermal fusion process had an extraction yield that was approximately 1.26 times greater than that of the heat process. These results indicate that the highly functional tienchi seng extracts created through the ultrasonic thermal fusion process are more industrially useful than those produced using the heat process.

  • Background: The inhibitory effect of Rodgersia podophylla root extract on melanin production has been reported, however, the study on the optimal extraction conditions that increase melanin inhibitory activity has not yet been performed. Methods and Results: In this study, we compared the melanin inhibitory activity of R. podophylla root extract obtained through different preprocessing and extraction methods. The melanin inhibitory activity was examined using Melan-A melanocytes. The results indicated that the inhibitory activity of R. podophylla roots collected in August was higher than that of the roots collected in May and November. Additionally, non-dried R. podophylla roots exhibited higher activity than dried roots, and the stirring extract was more active than the ultrasonic extract. Conclusions: Collection of R. podophylla root when the temperature is high, without drying, and stirring extraction are considered to be the optimal extraction conditions for increased melanin inhibitory effect.

  • After extracting the calcium component from the KR slag and the converter slag using ammonium chloride solution, the extract was reacted with carbon dioxide to synthesize precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC). In order to understand the effect of ultrasonic waves on calcium extraction from slags and calcium carbonate synthesis, the efficiency of calcium carbonate synthesis according to the with or without of ultrasonic waves was analyzed. The synthetic efficiency of PCC was investigated according to various experimental conditions, and the synthesized calcium carbonate was analyzed using XRD and SEM. In both slags, the amount of PCC decreased as the reaction temperature increased. The pH at the end of the experiment capable of synthesizing the maximum PCC in the carbonation reaction was 7 (irradiated with ultrasound) and 8 (irradiated without ultrasound), respectively. Because the pH of the extraction filtrate is different when irradiated with or without ultrasound, the pH was adjusted to 9 by injecting an additive (10 M NaOH) before the carbonation experiment, and then the experiment was performed. When calcium was extracted from KR slag, the crystal phase appeared as calcite regardless of the pH at the end of the experiment. However, when calcium was extracted from the converter slag and the pH was set to 7 at the end of the experiment, the crystal phase of PCC appeared as a mixture of calcite and vaterite.

  • In this study, the beeswax extraction methods using organic solvents were examined to develop a optimal dewaxing technology for beeswax-treated Hanji. Thermally-aged beeswax-treated Hanji was dewaxed using four types of extraction methods including dipping, Soxhlet extraction, ultrasonic washing and shaking methods. Then, the aging stability of the dewaxed Hanji was evaluated in terms of variations in paper strength and in the color of the printed area with muk. The experimental results suggested that the dewaxing methods allowing solvent to flow during extraction showed superior extraction efficiency. The dipping method in which the organic solvent does not flow showed the slowest extraction rate of beeswax compared to three other methods. In terms of variations in tensile strength and folding endurance, however, no obvious differences in the aging stability were observed amongst these four extraction methods. Regarding the aging stability in terms of the color of the printed area with muk, Soxhlet extraction method showed the best performance of dewaxing.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effective extraction condition for increase of phytoecdysteroids from fronds of Matteuccia struthiopteris (FMS) and Osmunda japonica (FOJ). Lyophilizated fronds were mixed with three different solvents (MeOH, 80% EtOH or water) and then extraction was carried out by using six different methods, such as, immersion (room temp.), heating (60$^{\circ}C$), stirring (200 rpm) for 6 h, or sonication in 42 kHz ultrasonic bath for 15, 30 and 45 minutes. Contents of 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) and ponasterone A (PonA) were measured by using HPLC after purification of the extracts by $C_{18}$ cartridge. Altogether, our results indicate that the extraction using sonication with MeOH as a solvent (for 30 minutes) was the most effective condition for 20E and PonA from both MFS and FOJ. Resulting contents of 20E from FMS and FOJ were 66.76 and 104.48 ${\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$ and PonA were 53.43 and 43.82 ${\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively.

  • Purpose: The current gold standard for clinical jawbone formation involves autogenous bone as a graft material. In addition, demineralized dentin can be an effective graft material. Although demineralized dentin readily induces heterotopic bone formation, conventional decalcification takes three to five days, so, immediate bone grafting after extraction is impossible. This study evaluated the effect of vacuum ultrasonic power on the demineralization and processing of autogenous tooth material and documented the clinical results of rapidly processed autogenous demineralized dentin (ADD) in an alveolar defects patient. Methods: The method involves the demineralization of extracted teeth with detached soft tissues and pulp in 0.6 N HCl for 90 minutes using a heat controlled vacuum-ultrasonic accelerator. The characteristics of processed teeth were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Bone grafting using ADD was performed for narrow ridges augmentation in the mandibular area. Results: The new processing method was completed within two hours regardless of form (powder or block). EDS and SEM uniformly demineralized autotooth biomaterial. After six months, bone remodeling was observed in augmented sites and histological examination showed that ADD particles were well united with new bone. No unusual complications were encountered. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the possibility of preparing autogenous tooth graft materials within two hours, allowing immediate one-day grafting after extraction.

  • This paper proposes a statistical regression method for classifying pillars and vehicles in parking area using a single ultrasonic sensor. There are three types of information provided by the ultrasonic sensor: TOF, the peak and the width of a pulse, from which 67 different features are extracted through segmentation and data preprocessing. The classification using the multiple SVM and the multinomial logistic regression are applied to the set of extracted features, and has achieved the accuracy of 85% and 89.67%, respectively, over a set of real-world data. The experimental result proves that the proposed feature extraction and classification scheme is applicable to the object classification using an ultrasonic sensor.

  • This study was conducted to monitor the yields of useful substances extracted from Inonotus obliquus. Optimization of ultrasonic-assisted extraction process was carried out by using response surface methodology under different extraction conditions. A central composite design was applied to investigate the effects of independent variables such as extraction time ($X_1$), ethanol concentration ($X_2$) and extraction temperature ($X_3$) on dependent variables such as soluble solid yield ($Y_1$), total phenol contents ($Y_2$), total flavonoid contents ($Y_3$) and browning color($Y_4$). Soluble solid yield was affected by ethanol concentration and extraction temperature. The maximum soluble solid yield was 18.02% at 20.47 min ($X_1$), 42.85% ($X_2$) and $69.57^{\circ}C$ ($X_3$) in saddle point. Total phenol contents were highly affected by ethanol concentration and extraction temperature. The maximum total phenol contents were 71.57mg GAE/g at 21.60min ($X_1$), 45.19% ($X_2$), $69.68^{\circ}C$ ($X_3$). The electron donating ability was affected by extraction temperature and extraction time. Total flavonoid contents were affected by only extraction temperature. The maximum total flavonoid contents were 35.98 mg RE/g at 22.53min ($X_1$), 46.37% ($X_2$), $69.56^{\circ}C$ ($X_3$) in saddle point. The browning color was highly affected by extraction time, ethanol concentration and extraction temperature. The maximum browning color was at 22.00 min ($X_1$), 46.89% ($X_2$), $69.71^{\circ}C$ ($X_3$) in saddle point. As a result, the optimum extraction conditions were predicted; extraction time of 21.50 min, ethanol concentration of 44.87% and extraction temperature of $69.635^{\circ}C$.
