The accurate analysis of ultrasonic wave propagation and scattering plays an important role in many aspects of nondestructive evaluation. A numerical analysis makes it possible to perform parametric studies, and in this way the probability of detection and reliability of test results can be improved. In this paper, a finite element method was employed for the analysis of ultrasonic wave propagation in anisotropic materials, and the accuracy of results was checked by comparing with analytical predictions. The element size and the integral time step, which are the critical components for the convergence of finite element solutions, were determined using a commercial finite element code. Some differences for wave propagation in anisotropic media were illustrated when plane waves are propagating in a unidirectionally reinforced composite materials. When plane waves are propagating in nonsymmetric directions in a symmetric plane, deviation angles between the wave vector and the energy vector were found from finite element analyses and the results agreed well with analytical calculations.

The present paper is concerned with the study of nonlinear ultrasonic waves in a magneto thermo (MT) elastic armchair single-walled carbon nanotube (ASWCNT) resting on polymer matrix. The analytical formulation is developed based on Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory to account small scale effect. After developing the formal solution of the mathematical model consisting of partial differential equations, the frequency equations have been analyzed numerically by using the nonlinear foundations supported by Winkler-Pasternak model. The solution is obtained by ultrasonic wave dispersion relations. Parametric work is carried out to scrutinize the influence of the non local scaling, magneto-mechanical loadings, foundation parameters, various boundary condition and length on the dimensionless frequency of nanotube. It is noticed that the boundary conditions, nonlocal parameter, and tube geometrical parameters have significant effects on dimensionless frequency of nano tubes. The results presented in this study can provide mechanism for the study and design of the nano devices like component of nano oscillators, micro wave absorbing, nano-electron technology and nano-electro- magneto-mechanical systems (NEMMS) that make use of the wave propagation properties of armchair single-walled carbon nanotubes embedded on polymer matrix.

In this work, we propose a new ultrasonic damage inspection method in plate structures. The proposed method employs an OPMT(orientation-adjustable patch-type magnetostrictive transducer) in order to make the ultrasonic waves directed to a specific target point. For experiments, virtual grid points were set up at every 50 mm in an aluminum plate and two OPMTs were used for inspection. If there exists a crack in a plate, the reflected Lamb wave from the crack is measured in addition to the direct waves from the transmitting transducer to the receiving transducer.
The present study investigates on the experimental and numerical results of heat transfer in the acoustic fields induced by ultrasonic waves. The strong upwards flow which moves from the bottom surface in a cavity to the free surface called as "acoustic streaming" was visualized by a particle image velocimetry (PIV). In addition, the augmentation ratio of heat transfer was experimentally investigated in the presence of acoustic streaming and was compared with the profiles of acoustic pressure calculated by the numerical analysis. A coupled finite element-boundary element method (FE-BEM) was applied for a numerical analysis. The results of experimental and numerical studies clearly show that acoustic pressure variations caused by ultrasonic waves in a medium are closely related to the augmentation of heat transfer.
It is well known that nonlinear propagation characteristics of the wave in the tissue may give very useful information for the medical diagnoisis. In this paper, a new method to detect nonlinear propagation characteristics of the internal vibration in the tissue for the low frequency mechanical vibration by using bispectral analysis is proposed. In the method, low frequency vibration of f0( = 100Hz) is applied on the surface of the object, and the waveform of the internal vibration x (t) is measured from Doppler frequency modulation of silmultaneously transmitted probing ultrasonic waves. Then, the bispectra of the signal x (t) at the frequencies (f0, f0) and (f0, 2f0) are calculated to estimate the nonlinear propagation characteristics as their magnitude ratio, w here since bispectrum is free from the gaussian additive noise we can get the value with high S/N. Basic experimental system is constructed by using 3.0 MHz probing ultrasonic waves and the several experiments are carried out for some phantoms. Results show the superiority of the proposed method to the conventional method using power spectrum and also its usefulness for the tissue characterization.

In this study, focusing of ultrasonic Lamb wave by negative refraction with mode conversion from antisymmetric to symmetric mode was investigated. When a wave propagates backward by negative refraction, the energy flux is antiparallel to the phase velocity. Backward propagation of Lamb wave is quite well known, but the behavior of backward Lamb wave at an interface has rarely been investigated. A pin-type transducer is used to detect Lamb wave propagating on a steel plate with a step change in thickness. Conversion from forward to backward propagating mode leads to negative refraction and thus wave focusing. By comparing the amplitudes of received Lamb waves at a specific frequency measured at different distance between transmitter and interface, the focusing of Lamb wave due to negative refraction was confirmed.

This paper proposes an ultrasonic method for measurement of linear and hysteretic interfacial stiffness of contacting surfaces between two steel plates subjected to nominal compression pressure. Interfacial stiffness was evaluated by the reflection and transmission coefficients obtained from three consecutive reflection waves from solid-solid surface using the shear wave. A nonlinear hysteretic spring model was proposed and used to define the quantitative interfacial stiffness of interface with the reflection and transmission coefficients. Acoustic model for 1-D wave propagation across interfaces is developed to formulate the reflection and transmission waves and to determine the linear and nonlinear hysteretic interfacial stiffness. Two identical plates are put together to form a contacting surface and pressed by bolt-fastening to measure interfacial stiffness at different states of contact pressure. It is found from experiment that the linear and hysteretic interfacial stiffness are successfully determined by the reflection and transmission coefficient at the contact surfaces through ultrasonic pulse-echo measurement.

This work is the attempt to give qualitative explanations to complex magnetic phenomena which are observed in the previously proposed magnetostrictive sensor capable of ultrasonic waves and rotational speed measurement. The law of approach is adopted as analysis tool in order to account for some extraordinary output patterns and proved to be effective. The distance between the anhysteretic curve current magnetic state and the variation of anhysteretic curve by stress mainly determine the sensor output shapes and their uniqueness. It is also experimentally verified that the precisely determined bias magnetic field strength can not only remove the unusual output parts but also maximize its sensitivity.

This paper describes a signal processing technique for identifying signals from defects by using an electromagnetic-ultrasonic guided waves method based on a magnetostrictive sensor that generates a torsional mode (T(0, 1)). Because this technique is based on the digital filtering, the filtered signals provide information on the relationship between the cutoff frequency of band-pass filter and the characteristic of defect signals in heat exchange tubes. To verify the performance of the technique, artificial defects with various thickness reduction ration and shape were machined in titanium tubes, and digital filtering results are reported. The results show that digital filtering provides information to the identify shape of defects and the contact condition between the tube and support ring. Therefore, the proposed technique has good potential as a tool for evaluating the integrity of heat exchange tubes.

Time reversal (TR) of body waves in fluids and isotropic solids has been used in many applications including ultrasonic NDE. However, the study of the TR method for anisotropic materials is not well established. In this paper, the full reconstruction of the input signal is investigated for anisotropic media using an analytical formulation, called a modular Gaussian beam (MGB) model. The time reversal operation of this model in the frequency domain is done by taking the complex conjugate of the Gaussian amplitude and phase received at the TR mirror position. A narrowband reference signal having a particular frequency and number of cycles is then multiplied and the whole signal is inverse Fourier transformed. The original input signal is seen to be fully restored by the TR process of MGB model and this model can be more generalized to simulate the spatial and temporal focusing effects due to TR process in anisotropic materials.
