  • In this paper, the result of an ultrasonic performance demonstration are analyzed. The requirements for an ultrasonic performance demonstration (PD) for a nuclear power plant were first described in ASME B&P Code Section XI, Appendix VIII (1989 winter addenda). In order to establish the performance demonstration scheme in Korean nuclear power plants, the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. Ltd (KHNP) has developed the Korean Performance Demonstration (KPD) system for the for the ultrasonic examination of nuclear power plants. An analysis of the ultrasonic performance demonstration results from 2004 through 2013 will improve the detection of flaws in an ultrasonic examination, as well as the further development of the KPD training system.

  • There were many flaw issues of reactor vessel head penetration in USA fleets. USNRC issued 10CFR50.55a to implement reactor vessel head penetration ultrasonic examination performance demonstration(PD) in US for enhancement of inspection reliability. After September 2009, all US utilities inspected their RVHP with PD qualified system. Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company(KHNP) have developed reactor vessel head penetration performance demonstration system for ultrasonic test to apply for pressurized light-water reactor power plants in accordance with 10CFR50.55a since September 2011. RVHP configuration surveying and analysis, code requirement analysis, and performance demonstration specimen design were performed up to this day. Fingerprinting of manufactured specimen, development of test data management program, development of operation procedure, input of flawed data, and development of final report will be performed for the next step. This paper describes the development status of the performance demonstration system for reactor vessel head penetration ultrasonic examination in Korea.

  • To enhance the reliability of ultrasonic testing system, MOST(Ministry of Science and Technology) bulletin 2004-13 was published in 2004.6 requiring performance demonstration in ultrasonic examination and MEST(Ministry of Education, Science and Technology) 2009-37 was published in 2009.9(formerly MOST bulletin 2004-13). In order to meet the MEST bulletin requirement and increase the reliability of ultrasonic testing, all the ultrasonic examination procedure and equipment should be performance demonstrated and qualified. In this paper, generic procedure for the ultrasonic examination of dissimilar metal welds are described and new technique are introduced.

  • The manual ultrasonic examination for the nuclear power plant piping welds has been demonstrated by using KPD(Korean Performance Demonstration) generic procedure. For automated ultrasonic examination, there is no generic procedure and it should be qualified by using applicable automated equipment. Until now, most of qualified procedures used pulse-echo technique and there is no qualified procedure using phased array technique. In this study, data acquisition and analysis software were developed and phased-array transducer and wedge were designed to implement phased array technique for nuclear power plant in-service inspection. The developed procedure are qualified for performance demonstration for the flaw detection, length sizing and depth sizing. The qualified procedure will be applied for the field examination in the nuclear power plant piping weld inspection.

  • The Korean Performance Demonstration(KPD) System for the ultrasonic testing personnel, equipments and procedures applicable to the Class 1 and 2 piping examination for nuclear power plant in Korea has been established. A round robin test was conducted in order to compare the examination results by the method of Performance Demonstration(PD) with the traditional dB-drop method. The round robin test shows that the reliability of the PD method is better than that of the dB-drop method. As a result, adoption of the PD method to the in-service inspection of the nuclear power plants will improve the reliability of the ultrasonic test results.

  • Performance demonstration with real flawed specimens has been strongly required for nondestructive evaluation of safety class components in nuclear power plant. Specimen has been designed to produce mechanical fatigue flaw with tension stress and fatigue flaw has been produced to control stress and cycle, for suitable roughness. Notch condition is considered for control of fracture mode. After seal welding for fracture surface, final welding was performed to complete flaw specimen with GTAW(Gas Tungsten Arc welding) and FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Welding). It was demonstrated flaw size of flawed specimen by radiographic. testing and ultrasonic testing.

  • The performance demonstration round robin test was conducted to quantify the capability of ultrasonic inspection for in-service and to address some aspects of reliability for nondestructive evaluation. The fifteen inspection teams who employed procedures that met or exceeded ASME Sec. XI code requirements detected the piping of nuclear power plant with various cracks to evaluate the capability of detection. With data from PD-RR test, the performance of ultrasonic nondestructive inspection could be assessed using probability of length and depth sizing of cracks.

  • Ultrasonic testing for welds is widely used to ensure the integrity of facilities in NPPs. Automated ultrasonic testing(AUT) is more consistent than the manual ultrasonic testing(MUT). It can scan welded parts, examines the scanned images, and saves the results as data files. AUT in NPPs is making use of commercial systems, and there has been some difficulties in calibration of the system. An AUT system is developed. It comprises of pulser/receiver, scanner and a control program(SonicWizard). The performance demonstration for piping welds in NPPs and the piping wall thickness measurement on site were conducted to verify this system. The test results of the ultrasonic testing system developed is satisfactory and effective.

  • Ultrasonic measurement is one of important technologies in the lift-time maintenance of nuclear poler plant. Ultrasonic inspection system is consisted of the operator, equipment and procedure. The reliability of ultrasonic inspection system is affected by its ability. The performance demonstration round robin was conducted to quantify the capability of ultrasonic inspection for in-service. The small number of teams who employed procedures that met or exceeded ASME Sec. XI Code requirements detected the piping of nuclear power plant with various cracks to evaluate the capability of detection and sizing. In this paper, the statistical reliability assessment of ultrasonic nondestructive inspection data using Monte Carlo simulation is presented. The results of the probability of detection (POD) analysis using Monte Carlo simulation are compared to these of logistic probability model. In these results, Monte Carlo simulation was found to be very useful to the reliability assessment f3r the small hit/miss data sets.
