An object of this study is to understand the correlation between the characteristics of an engine performance and combustion characteristics, applying BD20 fuel reformed by ultrasonic energy irradiation to diesel engines. Before conducting the main experiment, an experiment was performed to determine the optimum injection timimg of reformed BD20 by ultrasonic energy irradiation. To control the duration of the ultrasonic energy irradiation, the capacity of an ultrasonic energy fuel supply system was tested with 550cc and 1100cc chambers. As the result of the analysis of the regular BD20 and reformed BD20 by ultrasonic energy irradiation, the BSFC and the Power of the reformed BD20 was improved 3% and 6%, respectively compared to those of non-irradiated BD20. When the fuel injection timing was delayed by $5^{\circ}$, the engine power was improved by 3%, and the BSFC was improved by 2%. The maximum cylinder pressure of reformed BD20 was improved by a maximum of 6% in comparison to that of regular BD20, and demonstrated a synergistic effect of 3% by delaying the injection timing $5^{\circ}$.

As thermosonic ball bonding is developed for more and more advanced applications in the electronic packaging industry, the control of process stresses induced on the integrated circuits becomes more important. If Cu bonding wire is used instead of Au wire, larger ultrasonic levels are common during bonding. For advanced microchips the use of Cu based wire is risky because the ultrasonic stresses can cause chip damage. This risk needs to be managed by e.g. the use of ultrasound during the impact stage of the ball on the pad ("pre-bleed") as it can reduce the strain hardening effect, which leads to a softer deformed ball that can be bonded with less ultrasound. To find the best profiles of ultrasound during impact, a numerical model is reported for ultrasonic bonding with capillary dynamics combined with a geometrical model describing ball deformation based on volume conservation and stress balance. This leads to an efficient procedure of ball bond modelling bypassing plasticity and contact pairs. The ultrasonic force and average stress at the bond zone are extracted from the numerical experiments for a $50{\mu}m$ diameter free air ball deformed by a capillary with a hole diameter of $35{\mu}m$ at the tip, a chamfer diameter of $51{\mu}m$, a chamfer angle of $90^{\circ}$, and a face angle of $1^{\circ}$. An upper limit of the ultrasonic amplitude during impact is derived below which the ultrasonic shear stress at the interface is not higher than 120 MPa, which can be recommended for low stress bonding.

An effect of ultrasonic irradiation for the extraction and synthesis of alumina from kaolin was investigated by comparing ultrasonic irradiation method and conventional method with the same factors as reaction time, reaction temperature, and acid concentration. The ultrasonic irradiation method accelerated alumina extraction in comparison to conventional method at $60{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ for $1{\sim}6\;h$ in $1{\sim}5\;M$${H_2}{SO_4}$. The characteristics of precipitates and calcined samples, synthesized under the ultrasonic irradiation method and the conventional method, were determined by the means of DTA/TG, XRD, SEM, PSA, BET, etc. Especially, the calcined sample synthesized under the ultrasonic irradiation method had smaller particle size and larger surface area than that synthesized under the conventional method.
The stress dependence of ultrasonic wave velocity is known as the acoustoelastic effect. This effect is useful for stress monitoring if the acoustoelastic coefficient of a subject medium is known. The acoustoelastic coefficients of metallic materials such as steel have been studied widely. However, the acoustoelastic coefficient of concrete has not been well understood yet. Basic constituents of concrete are water, cement, and aggregates. The mix proportion of those constituents greatly affects many mechanical and physical properties of concrete and so does the acoustoelastic coefficient of concrete. In this study, influence of the water-cement ratio (w/c ratio) and the fine-coarse aggregates ratio (fa/ta ratio) on the acoustoelastic coefficient of concrete was investigated. The w/c and the fa/ta ratios are important parameters in mix design and affect wave behaviors in concrete. Load-controlled uni-axial compression tests were performed on concrete specimens. Ultrasonic wave measurements were also performed during the compression tests. The stretching coda wave interferometry method was used to obtain the relative velocity change of ultrasonic waves with respect to the stress level of the specimens. From the experimental results, it was found that the w/c ratio greatly affects the acoustoelastic coefficient while the fa/ta ratio does not. The acoustoelastic coefficient increased from $0.003073MPa^{-1}$ to $0.005553MPa^{-1}$ when the w/c ratio was increased from 0.4 to 0.5. On the other hand, the acoustoelastic coefficient changed in small from $0.003606MPa^{-1}$ to $0.003801MPa^{-1}$ when the fa/ta ratio was increased from 0.3 to 0.5. Finally, it was also found that the relative velocity change has a linear relationship with the stress level of concrete.

In this study, the effect of the shape of the specimen and the feedrate of the dental ultrasonic surgical instrument on the cutting force and surface roughness of the specimen is analyzed. Experimental specimens were made of SAWBONES artificial bone materials in square and spherical specimens. In addition, the cutting feedrate of the surgical instrument was controlled through the developed moving system. The cutting force generated when cutting the specimen was measured through a force sensor. After the experiment, the cutting surface of the specimen was observed through a three-dimensional optical microscope and the surface roughness was measured. Through one-way ANOVA, the effect of each specimen shape and feed rate on surface roughness was analyzed. As a result of the experiment, the cutting force increased proportionally in the initial feed rate increase stage, but the increase in cutting force decreased as the feed rate continued to increase. Also, the cutting force showed a difference according to the shape of the specimen. The spherical specimen with a relatively small cutting surface area had less cutting force than the square specimen. However, as a result of one-way ANOVA, it was found that the specimen shape and feed rate did not affect the surface roughness. In future studies, it is expected to be used for comparative analysis of ultrasonic surgical instruments and correlation analysis between cutting factors.

In the context of Korean residential heating systems, Ondol pipelines are a prevalent choice. However, the maintenance of these pipelines becomes a complex task once they are embedded within concrete structures. As time progresses, the accumulation of sludge, corrosive oxides, and microorganisms on the inner surfaces of these pipelines diminishes their heating efficiency. In extreme scenarios, this accumulation can induce corrosion and scale formation, compromising the system's integrity. Consequently, this research introduces an ultrasonic generation system tailored for the upkeep of Ondol pipelines, with the objective of empirically assessing its practicality. This investigation delineates three variants of ultrasonic generating apparatuses: those employing surface vibration, external generation, and internal generation techniques. To emulate the presence of contaminants within the pipelines, substances in powder, slurry, and liquid forms were employed. The efficacy of the cleaning process post-ultrasonic wave application was scrutinized over time, with image analysis methodologies being utilized to evaluate the outcomes. The findings indicate that ultrasonic waves, whether generated externally or internally, exert a beneficial effect on the cleanliness of the pipelines. Given the inherent characteristics of Ondol pipelines, external generation proves impractical, thereby rendering internal generation a more viable solution for pipeline maintenance. It is anticipated that future endeavors will pave the way for innovative maintenance strategies for Ondol pipelines, particularly through the advancement of internal generation technologies for pipeline applications.
As a result of the medium coupling, propagation characteristics of ultrasonic waves guided by a multi-phase medium can be different from those in a homogeneous system. This phenomenon becomes prominent for a medium consisting of phases with considerably distinct material and physical properties (e.g., submerged structures or human bones covered with soft tissues). In this study, the coupling effect arising from both fluid and soft tissues on wave propagation in engineering structures and human bone phantoms, respectively, was explored and calibrated quantitatively, with a purpose of enhancing the precision of ultrasonic-wave-based non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and clinical quantitative ultrasound (QUS). Calibration results were used to rectify conventional NDE during evaluation of corrosion in a submerged aluminium plate, and QUS during prediction of simulated healing status of a mimicked bone fracture. The results demonstrated that with the coupling effect being appropriately taken into account, the precision of NDE and QUS could be improved.

The nondestructive testing methods are commonly used to determine the in-situ compressive strength of concrete. The correlation curves to evaluate the effect of aging on the development of concrete strength was proposed. Thirty two ${\Phi}10{\times}20cm$ cylinder specimens were cast from 5 batches having different strength levels. The correlation curves for rebound hammer method, ultrasonic pulse velocity method and combined method were derived from the laboratory tests and multiple regression analysis. To account for the change of condition such as surface hardness, internal moisture contents, the aging coefficients are applied to the correlation curves. From the comparison the nondestructive strength with the core strength taken from the existing reinforced concrete structures, the validity of the proposed correlation curves are verified.

This study evaluated the effect of ultrasonic irradiation on improving the flux and cleaning efficiency in membrane process which is widely applied for the treatment of landfill leachate. The experiments on improvement of membrane flux according to the types of membranes(hallowfiber microfiltration, MF and tubular ultrafiltration, UF) were performed with changing frequency($40{\sim}120$ kHz), intensity ($200{\sim}500$ W) and irradiation time of ultrasound as well us operation pressure($0.1{\sim}2.3kg/cm^2$). Membrane was fouled for the first 50 min with primary treated leachate and then the change in flux according to ultrasonic irradiation period was observed for 70 min. Parameters influenced to the recovery ratio corresponding the net flux on pure water and to the enhancement ratio applied after ultrasonic irradiation on the flux were analyzed. In same condition, the flux was improved in proportion to ultrasonic intensity while the improvement of flux was inversely proportional to ultrasonic frequency. The cleaning effect of membrane was delayed and reduced when operation pressure of membrane was high. The recovery ratio and enhancement ratio for $0.1{\mu}m$ MF membrane were 10% and 500%, respectively while those were maximized at $75{\sim}98%\;and\;40{\sim}50%$ for UF membrane for 10,000 and 100,000 MWCO, respectively. In conclusion, it was confirmed that ultrasonic cleaning using mechanical vibration is alternative to water or chemical cleaning for improving membrane flux.
The purpose of this study was to spectrophotometrically investigate the sealing effect of the ultrasonic canal obturation with softened gutta-percha utilizing an endosonic plugger by means of ultrasonic vibrations and heat. The 120 extracted human central and lateral incisors with single root were randomly selected, and the root canals were instrumented up to size #60 file by conventional method. The prepared canals were obtruated with gutta-percha by lateral condensation method, McSpadden technique and ultrasonic condensation method, with or without sealer. All specimens were immersed in 2% methylene blue in an incubator at $37^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. The teeth were then dissolved in 5ml of 60% nitric acid solution and the dye present within the root canal system was returned to solution. The leakage of dye was quantitatively measured via spectrophotometric method. The obtained data statistically evaluated usint two-way ANOVA and Student's t-test. The results were as follows : No statistically significant difference in leakage was observed between the lateral condensation method and ultrasonic condensation method, with and without sealer. When sealer was used or not, McSpadden technique showed significantly greater leakage than lateral or ultrasonic condensation method. Statistical analysis of the data indicated that the canals obturated in conjunction with sealer demonstrated less dye leakage than the canals obturated without sealer(p<0.01), except McSpadden technique. The ultrasonic condensation method appeared comparable sealing ability to the lateral condensation method.
