South Africa recognises piped water as the main source of safe drinking water supply. Remote areas do not have access to this resource and they rely solely on surface water for survival, which exposes them to waterborne diseases. Interim point of use solutions are not practiced due to their laboriousness and alteration of the taste. Bio-ultra low pressure driven membrane system has been noted to be able to produce stable fluxes after one week of operation; however, there is limited literature on South African waters. This study was conducted on three rivers namely; Umgeni, Umbilo and Tugela. Three laboratory systems were setup to evaluate the performance of the technology in terms of producing stable fluxes and water that is compliant with the WHO 2008 drinking water guideline with regards to turbidity, total coliforms and E.coli. The obtained flux rate trends were similar to those noted in literature where they are referred to as stable fluxes. However, when further comparing the obtained fluxes to the normal dead-end filtration curve, it was noted that both the Umbilo and Tugela Rivers responded similarly to a normal dead-end filtration curve. The Umgeni River was noted to produce flux rates which were higher than those obtainable under normal dead-end. It can be concluded that there was no stabilisation of flux noted. However, feed water with low E.coli and turbidity concentrations enhances the flux rates. The technology was noted to produce water of less than 1 NTU and 100% removal efficiency for E.coli and total coliforms.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of concentrated pig slurry separated from membrane filter and by environment-friendly agro-materials mixtures on growth of lettuce in hydroponics. The swine waste treatment system having a ultra filtration and a reverse osmosis process was designed in this study. Filtration of pig slurry was necessary to prevent the hose clogging in hydroponics. Primary separation using ultra filter was followed by concentration by RO (Reverse Osmosis). The concentrated pig slurry (CS) was mixed by five different environment-friendly agro-materials mixtures. The chemical nutrient solution was the solution of National Horticulture Research Station for the growth of lettuce. The concentration of nutrient solution in hydroponics was adjusted a range of 1.5 mS/cm in EC. The concentrated pig slurry was low in phosphorus(P), suspended solid and heavy matal, but rich in potassium (K). The concentrated slurry was lowest in the growth characteristics of leaf lettuce. And also SPAD value in leaf was reduced in plot treated with concentrated slurry. But the growth of lettuce in the mixtures plot (CS+BM+AA, CS+BM+AA+SW) in hydroponics was significantly high compared to concentrated slurry. The fresh yield of lettuce was 78, 84% that of nutrient solution as 131.9, 142.2g in plot of CS+BM+AA and CS+BM+AA+SW, respectively. Our studies have shown that it is possible to produce organic culture using concentrated slurry and environment-friendly agro-materials mixture, although growth is slower than when using a conventional inorganic hydroponic solution.

Wastewater Based Epidemiology (WBE) provides useful information not only on the use of illegal drugs in the community, but also on the presence of hygiene and health products and infectious pathogens in sewage facilities. As a consequence of the SARS-CoV-19 virus epidemic in 2019, monitoring the status of the infection is of utmost importance. SARS-CoV-19 was also detected in sewage, and the number and trend of infections in the community suggest that the application of the WBE system would be useful and appropriate. This study introduces a pre-treatment concentration method including viruses in sewage samples. A total of seven methods which were subdivided into methods for adsorption-extraction, ultra-filtration, PEG precipitation, and ultra-centrifugation, and the results for analyzing the recovery rates were included. Meanwhile, it is necessary to pay attention to rapid detection technologies which analyze infectious pathogens at the site of sewage facilities. These can include ELISA, FTIR, SERS, and biosensor based on the detection principle, and the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of each were summarized herein. If rapid detection technologies and accurate quantitative analyses are further developed, the use of sewage mechanics in response to pandemic viruses is expected to expand further.

This study aims to suggest wastewater treatment options for diaper recycling by identifying characteristic analysis of wastewater from diaper recycling process and efficiency evaluation of wastewater treatment units. The wastewater characteristic analysis showed that the concentration of organic pollutants and ionic materials were very high comparing to seawater. Through the investigation of similar wastewater treatment, six treatment units were identified to reduce pollutants. It is found UF(ultra-filtration), DAF(dissolved air flotation), fenton oxidation, electro-coagulation and chemical-coagulation are effective in reducing organic pollutants while membrane system and ion exchanger are effective in reducing ionic materials. Even though the target of water quality should be secured in terms of managing organic pollutants level, the application of treatment unit for reducing ionic material needs lots of considerations. This result suggests that reuse of pulping wastewater after controlling organic pollutants is better than direct discharge of pulping wastewater. To select the appropriate wastewater treatment unit, an economic analysis about operation condition, wastewater flow, cost, efficiency should be considered.
Advances in industrial development and waste management over several decades have reduced many of the impacts that previously affected ecosystems, however, there are still processes which discharge hazardous materials into environments. Among industries that produce industrial wastewaters, textile manufacturing processes play a noticeable role. This study was conducted to test a novel continuous combined commercial membrane treatment using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), ultrafiltration (UF), and polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes for textile wastewater treatment. The synthetic textile wastewater used in this study contained sodium silicate, wax, and five various reactive dyes. The results indicate that the removal efficiency for physical particles (wax and resin) was 95% through the UF membrane under optimum conditions. Applying UF and NF hybrid treatment resulted in total effective removal of dye from all synthetic samples. The efficiency of sodium silicate removal was measured to be between 2.5 to 4.5% and 13 to 16% for UF and NF, respectively. The chemical oxygen demand in all samples was reduced by more than 85% after treatment by NF.
Behavior of permeate flux decline was examined through the hollow fiber membrane in ultrafiltration system for Si colloidal solution. Flux decline with time was due to the growth of Si cake deposited on the membrane surface and the pore blocking by Si particles for the hollow fiber membrane. At the pseudo steady state of operation, the permeate flux of dead-end flow was 60 % to that of the cross flow. The ratio of permeate flux to the pure water flux, $J/J_w$, decreased with increasing the trans-membrane pressure, from 64.2 % for $0.5kg_f/cm^2$ to 45.7 % for $2.0kg_f/cm^2$. When the feed flow rate was 3 L/min, the pore blocking model was dominant at the initial period of filtration and was followed by the cake filtration model. And with increasing the feed flow rate from 1 L/min to 3 L/min, $R_c$ was $1.79{\times}10^{12}{\sim}2.34{\times}10^{12}m^{-1}$ which was the about 40 % decreased value to that of the 1 L/min while $R_p$ was not changed and was $1.71{\times}10^{12}m^{-1}$ approximately.

In the perspective of saving energy in buildings, the high performance of insulation and air tightness for improving the heating and the cooling efficiency, has brought economically positive effects. However, these building energy saving technologies cause the lack of ventilation, which is the direct cause of increasing the indoor contaminants, and is also very harmful to the residents, because they spend over 90% of their time indoors. Therefore, the ventilation is important to keep the indoor environment clean and it can also save the energy consumption. In this study, a HEPA type nano ceramic filter is designed as a passive ventilation system to collect airborne particles and to supply fresh outdoor air. The double layer filter, which has $30{\mu}m$ in diameter at the conditions of 10wt% of concentration and 3kV/cm of the electric intensity, is produced by electrospinning. The filtration coating technology is confirmed in the solution with $SiO_2$ nano particles using polymer nano fibers. Also double layer filters are coated with $SiO_2$ nano particles and finally the porous construction materials are made by sintering in the electric furnace at $200{\sim}1400^{\circ}C$. The efficiency is measured 96.67% at the particle size of $0.31{\mu}m$, which is slightly lower than HEPA filter. However the efficiency is turned out to be sufficient.
Imunoglobulins from bovine plasma proteins were isolated by IMAC which $Cu^{2+}$ was chelated on a chelating sepharose fast flow gel. Most plasma proteins were eluted by 1st (0.01 M $Na_2HPO_4$, 0.5 M NaCl, pH 4.0) and 2nd elution buffers (0.01 M imidazol). According to the reverse phase HPLC analysis, it was found that proteins which were eluted by 1st elution buffer were mainly composed of serum albumin, while most IgG and transferrin were eluted by 2nd elution buffer. When protein fractions obtained by 2nd elution buffer was applied to ultra filtration system (molecular weight cut off: 100 kD), IgG was further purified. These results indicate that IMAC is an excellent tool for isolating imunoglobulins from plasma proteins.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the hangover relieving effect of HO-series. HO-S1 is an herbal mixture, which consists of extracts from Flower of Pueraria lobata Ohwi, Glycyrrhiza glabra Linné, Fruit of Lycium chinense Miller, Poria cocos Wolf, Acanthopanax sessiliflorum Seeman, Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, Atractylodes lancea De Candlle and Zingiber officinale Roscoe. HO-S2 is a candidate that has been performed to ultra filtration based on HO-S1. HO-S3 is a mixture of amino acids and vitamins based on HO-S2. HO-01 is the final beverage base produced based on HO-S3. The antioxidant activity of HO-series was similar to that of vitamin C or trolox. The production of t-BHP induced reactive oxygen species(ROS) was significantly blocked in the presence of HO-series. In vivo study, AUC of alcohol and acetaldehyde concentrations in HO-S2 and HO-S3 treated groups significantly decreased. Hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase(ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase(ALDH) activity were significantly higher in HO-S2 and HO-S3 treated groups. And 2E1 activity and glutathione were significantly elevated, while the malondialdehyde level was not significantly in liver tissue. After alcohol exposure, the sensitivity scores of blood alcohol and acetaldehyde concentration and hangover symptoms were significantly decreased in the HO-01 intake group compared with the non-intake group. ALDH activity was significantly increased in the HO-01 intake group. HO-series have antioxidant activity and a protective effect from ROS. HO-S2, HO-S3 and HO-01 are potentially highly beneficial in relieving hangover, as it scavenges reactive free radicals and boosts the endogenous antioxidant system.

In this study, WET (whole effluent toxicity) test with Skeletonema costatum, Tigriopus japonicus and Paralichthys olivaceus and ERA (environmental risk assessment) were conducted to assess the unacceptable effect on marine ecosystem by emitting the treated discharge water from 'ARA Plasma BWTS' BWMS (ballast water management system) using filtration, Plasma and MPUV module. 34 psu treated discharge water from ARA Plasma BWTS shown slight chronic toxicity effect on the P. olivaceus ($7d-LC_{50}{\Rightarrow}100.00%$ treated discharge water, $7d-LC_{25}{\Rightarrow}85.15%$ treated discharge water). Bromobenzene, chlorobenzene and 4-chlorotoluene in 34 psu treated discharge water from ARA Plasma BWTS were higher than in the background original content of seawater. The PECs (predictive environmental concentrations) of bromobenzene, chlorobenzene and 4-chlorotoluene calculated by MAMPEC (marine antifoulant model to predict environmental concentrations) program (ver. 3.0) were 3.34E-03, 2.10E-03 and 1.73E-03 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, respectively and PNECs (predicted no effect concentrations) of them were 1.6, 0.5 and 1.9 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$. The PEC/PNEC ratio of bromobenzene, chlorobenzene and 4-chlorotoluene did not exceed one and 3 substances did not consider as persistence, bioaccumulative and toxic. Therefore, it was suggested that treated discharge water from ARA Plasma BWTS did not pose unacceptable effect on marine ecosystem.
