Concrete filled steel tube (CFST) structures have been used widely in high-rise buildings and bridges due to the efficiency of structurally favourable interaction between the steel tube and the concrete core. In the current design codes only one loading condition in the column members is considered, i.e., the load is applied on the steel tube and concrete core at the same time. However, in engineering practice the tube structures may be subjected to various loading conditions such as loading on the concrete core only, preloading on the steel tube skeleton before filling of concrete core, and so on. In this research, a series of comparative experiments were carried out to study the structural performance of concrete filled circular steel tube columns subject to four concentric loading schemes. Then, a generalized prediction method is developed to evaluate the ultimate load capacity of CFST columns subject to various loading conditions. It is shown that the predictions by the proposed method agree well with test results.

This paper describes the varying material model, the analysis method and the software development for reinforced concrete circular columns confined by spiral or hoop transverse steel reinforcement and subjected to eccentric loading. The widely used Mander model of concentric loading is adapted here to eccentric loading by developing an auto-adjustable stress-strain curve based on the eccentricity of the axial load or the size of the compression zone to generate more accurate interaction diagrams. The prediction of the ultimate unconfined capacity is straight forward. On the other hand, the prediction of the actual ultimate capacity of confined concrete columns requires specialized nonlinear analysis. This nonlinear procedure is programmed using C-Sharp to build efficient software that can be used for design, analysis, extreme event evaluation and forensic engineering. The software is equipped with an elegant graphics interface that assimilates input data, detail drawings, capacity diagrams and demand point mapping in a single sheet. Options for preliminary design, section and reinforcement selection are seamlessly integrated as well. Improvements to KDOT Bridge Design Manual using this software with reference to AASHTO LRFD are made.
In this study, circular thin-walled reinforced high strength concrete-filled steel tube (RHSCFST) stub columns with various tube thicknesses (i.e., 1.8, 2.5 and 3.0mm) and reinforcement ratios (i.e., 0, 1.6%, 2.4% and 3.2%) were fabricated to explore the influence of these factors on the axial compressive behavior of RHSCFST. The obtained test results show that the failure mode of RHSCFST transforms from outward buckling and tearing failure to drum failure with the increasing tube thickness. With the tube thickness and reinforcement ratio increased, the ultimate load-carrying capacity, compressive stiffness and ductility of columns increased, while the lateral strain in the stirrup decreased. Comparisons were also made between test results and the existing codes such as AIJ (2008), BS5400 (2005), ACI (2019) and EC4 (2010). It has been found that the existing codes provide conservative predictions for the ultimate load-carrying capacity of RHSCFST. Therefore, an accurate model for the prediction of the ultimate load-carrying capacity of circular thin-walled RHSCFST considering the steel reinforcement is developed, based on the obtained experimental results. It has been found that the model proposed in this study provides more accurate predictions of the ultimate load-carrying capacity than that from existing design codes.
The high capacity bi-directional pile load test is an optimum pile load test method for high-rised buildings. Especially, a high pressure and double-acting bi-directional pile load testing, a special type of the high capacity bi-directional pile load test, is the most practical way to overcome limitations of loading capacities and constraints of field conditions, which was judged to be a very useful test method for requiring high loading capacities. Total of 2 high capacity bi-directional pile load tests(P-1 and P-2) were conducted in high-rised building sites in Korea. Based on the field load test results, the sufficiency ratio of loading capacities to design loads for P-1 and P-2 were 3.3 and 2.1, respectively. For P-2, the load test could not verify the design load if 1-directional loads applied slightly smaller than the actual applied load. Also, high capacity bi-directional pile load tests were difficult to determine an ultimate state of ground or piles, although the loads were applied until their maximum loads. Hence, finite element analyses were conducted to determine their ultimate states by calibrating and extrapolate with test results.
The Early-age construction loading and changing properties of concrete, especially in the multi-story structures can affect the slab deflection, significantly. Based on previously conducted experiment on eight simply-supported one-way slabs this paper investigates the effect of concrete type, fiber type and content, loading value, cracking moment, ultimate moment and applied moment on the instantaneous deflection of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) slabs. Two distinct loading levels equal to 30% and 40% of the ultimate capacity of the slab section were applied on the slabs at the age of 14 days. A wide range of the existing models of the effective moment of inertia which are mainly developed for conventional concrete elements, were investigated. Comparison of the experimental deflection values with predictions of the existing models shows considerable differences between the recorded and estimated instantaneous deflection of SCC slabs. Calculated elastic deflection of slabs at the ages of 14 and 28 days were also compared with the experimental deflection of slabs. Based on sensitivity analysis of the effective parameters, a new model is proposed and verified to predict the effective moment of inertia in SCC slabs with and without fiber reinforcing under two different loading levels at the age of 14 days.
Experiments have been carried out on six composite and two plain steel plate girders under shear loading to understand the elastic and inelastic behaviour of such girders. The failure mechanism assumed and used to develop design equations is normally based on the failure patterns observed in the experiments. Therefore, different types of cracks and failure patterns observed in the experiments are reviewed briefly first. Based on the observed failure patterns, a design method to predict the ultimate shear capacity of composite plate girders is proposed in this paper. The values of ultimate shear capacity obtained using the proposed design method are compared with the corresponding experimental values and it is found that the proposed method is able to predict the shear capacity accurately.
Composite steel plate deep beam (CDB) is proposed as a lateral resisting member, which is constructed by steel plate and reinforced concrete (RC) panel, and it is connected with building frame through high-strength bolts. To investigate the seismic performance of the CDB, tests of two 1/3 scaled specimens with different length-to-height ratio were carried out under cyclic loads. The failure modes, load-carrying capacity, hysteretic behavior, ductility and energy dissipation were obtained and analyzed. In addition, the nonlinear finite element (FE) models of the specimens were established and verified by the test results. Besides, parametric analyses were performed to study the effect of length-to-height ratio, height-to-thickness ratio, material type and arrangement of RC panel. The experimental and numerical results showed that: the CDBs lost their load-carrying capacity because of the large out-of plane deformation and yield of the tension field formed on the steel plate. By increasing the length-to-height ratio of steel plate, the load-carrying capacity, elastic stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens were significantly enhanced. The ultimate loading capacity increased with increasing the length-to-height ratio of steel plate and yield strength of steel plate; and such capacity increased with decreasing of height-to-thickness ratio of steel plate and gap. Finally, a unified formula is proposed to calculate their ultimate loading capacity, and fitting formula on such indexes are provided for designation of the CDB.
In this paper, post-earthquake capacity evaluation method of reinforced concrete buildings was studied. Substructure pseudo-dynamic test and static loading test of first story column in a four-story R/C building was carried out in order to investigate the validity of the evaluation method proposed in the Damage Assessment Guideline (JBDPA 2001). In pseudo-dynamic test, different levels of damage were induced in the specimens by pre-loading, and input levels of seismic motion, at which the specimens reached to the ultimate stage, were examined. From the experimental result, no significant difference in damage levels such as residual crack width between the specimens under static and pseudo-dynamic loading was found. It is shown that the seismic capacity reduction factors ${\eta}$ can provide a reasonable estimation of post-earthquake seismic capacity of R/C buildings suffered earthquakes.
The objective of this paper is to investigate the mechanical performances of polygonal concrete-filled circular steel tubular (CFT) stub columns under axial loading through combined experimental and numerical study. A total of 32 specimens were designed to investigate the effect of the concrete strength and steel ratio on the compressive behavior of polygonal CFT stub columns. The ultimate bearing capacity, ductility and confinement effect were analyzed based on the experimental results and the failure modes were discussed in detail. Besides, ABAQUS was adopted to establish the three dimensional FE model. The composite action between the core concrete and steel tube was further discussed and clarified. It was found that the behavior of CFT stub column changes with the change of the cross-section, and the change is continuous. Finally, based on both experimental and numerical results, a unified formula was developed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of polygonal CFT stub columns according to the superposition principle with rational simplification. The predicted results showed satisfactory agreement with both experimental and FE results.
Precast R.C. slabs are being used widely for the construction of bridge structures due to their simplicity in construction processes. However, one of the disadvantages in precast R.C. slabs is the existence of transverse joints between two precast slabs. The transverse joints are structurally fragile and the task of strengthening the joints is difficult one due to their structural discontinuity. The aim of this study was to improve the behavior of transverse joints between precast R.C. slabs by introducing prestress with external cables. Three steel-concrete composite bridge specimens, which were prestressed with the external cables anchored on steel girders, were fabricated in the laboratory. Both pretension and post-tension methods were applied to introduce prestressing on the concrete slab with a straight tendon arrangement. Static tests were conducted at service load and ultimate load test was performed to evaluate punching shear capacity of the transverse joint. In this paper, two prestressing methods were tested and their effects were evaluated with respect to the elastic behavior and ultimate loading capacity of the transverse joints.
