Numerical simulation of set-up around shaft of XCC pile in clay

  • This paper conducts a complicated coupled effective stress analysis of X-section-in-place concrete (XCC) pile installation and consolidation processes using the dual-stage Eulerian-Lagrangian (DSEL) technique incorporating the modified Cam-clay model. The numerical model is verified by centrifuge data and field test results. The main objective of this study is to investigate the shape effect of XCC pile cross-section on radial total stress, excess pore pressure and time-dependent strength. The discrepancies of the penetration mechanism and set-up effects on pile shaft resistance between the XCC pile and circular pile are discussed. Particular attention is placed on the time-dependent strength around the XCC pile shaft. The results show that soil strength improved more significantly close to the flat side compared with the concave side. Additionally, the computed ultimate shaft resistance of XCC pile incorporating set-up effects is 1.45 times that of the circular pile. The present findings are likely helpful in facilitating the incorporation of set-up effects into XCC pile design practices.

대형평판재하시험의 지중응력 측정결과를 이용한 연암의 변형계수 산정 (Estimation of deformation modulus for rock mass using stress distribution under ground in Large Plate Load Test)

  • The field plate test has a good potential for determining since it measures both plate pressure and settlement. The deformation modulus of rock mass is differently measured for status of structures. The values of deformation modulus are obtained from laboratory test (uniaxial and triaxial test) and field test (pressuremeter test). Plate load test should be conducted by different loading plate sizes for geological structure of rock mass and scale of structures. In this paper, large plate load tests were performed to predict of structure's behavior and evaluate the ultimate bearing capacity of the foundation on soft rock. Simultaneously, deformation modulus of rock mass was estimated by back analysis of stresses measured in field test under rock mass. Finally, we verified the validation of deformation modulus of rock mass through result of large plate load test and numerical simulation.

Computer Program을 이용한 화학물질의 환경동태 예측 (Prediction of Environmental Fate of Certain Chemicals Using Computer Simulation Programs)

  • Environmental hazards of a chemical could be assessed by two different approaches : toxicity test and assessment of exposure potentials to human and environmental organisms. For the prediction of environmental fate of chemicals three available computer programs were compared each other and were verified. The results obtained by using these computer programs, PCHEM, EXAMS, and E4CHEM were summarized as follows. The estimated octanol/water partition coefficients by PCHEM were similar to the experimental values in the literature. But the other factors, water solubility and vapor pressure were different from the data in the literature. The simulation results of selected compounds by EXAMS showed similar tendency to the literature results of model field environment. Therefore, this computer program could be utilized to predict the environmental fate of chemicals. E4CHEM program is very simple and this program could predict the ultimate environmental fate of stable chemicals by input of two or three parameters. However, the validity should further be verified in the future field study using more compounds. It is suggested that these approaches could be fully utilized by understanding their limitations to predict the environmental fate of new chemicals under development, to screen the potential environmental pollutants among chemicals already-in use, and to devise measures to minimize the hazards to the environment.

지중 매설 GFRP 관로 및 플랜지의 거동 분석 (Behavior Analysis of Buried GFRP Pipes and Flanges)

  • Static analyses and buckling analyses were carried out for buried GFRP pipes by using finite element method. Vehicle loads, vertical and lateral soil pressures were considered as external loads, and supplying water pressure was considered as an internal load. Nine types of the factory-manufactured GFRP pipes were analyzed. Their maximum stresses and displacements were compared with the limit displacements and ultimate stress. Additionally, stress analysis on an enhanced flange, which was designed to reduce stress concentration, was performed. A cantilever analysis was carried out to know the maximum stress on the neck of the flange, which is the critical part. And a static analysis was carried for the buried flange. The test results showed that GFRP pipes were safe and stable against the external loads. And they showed that the enhanced flange decreased about 35% of the stress concentration.

점성토지반에 축조한 제방의 변형추정 -고흥만 방수제 사례연구를 중심으로- (A Deformation Prediction of the Embankment on the Soft Clayey Foundation - A Case Study of the Sea Dike of Koheung Bay -)

  • This paper aims at developing the prediction technique of the deformation for the embankment such as sea dike and shore protection relevant to reclamation project along the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. Generally total deformation of a sea dike over clayey foundation are composed of immediate settlement, plastic deformation and consolidation settlement. Plastic deformation occurs when the ultimate bearing capacity is less than overburden pressure containing the stress increment due to the construction of an embankment. The reliable prediction of total settlement is very important since deformed final geometry of sea dike is directly connected for analysing the safety of the long-term slope failure and piping. During this study, plastic deformation, major part of deformation was analysed using the program developed by authors, whereas immediate settlement and consolidation settlement were predicted by Mochinaka and Sena's method and Terzaghi's 1-dimensional theory of consolidation respectively. In order to validate the prediction technique for the deformation, a case study of Koheung Bay reclamation works was carried out. A good agreement was obtained between observation and prediction, which means the applicability of the technique.

Interest Rate Caps in Microfinance: Issues and Challenges

  • Purpose - To control exorbitant interest rates, implementation of an interest rate ceiling is a standard practice in microfinance. However, there are pros and cons of such market intervention. Hence, the aim of this short note is to highlight issues and challenges regarding the interest rate cap in microfinance, both from the perspective of clients and institutions. Research design, data, and methodology - While the nature of this short note is explanatory and descriptive, the research methodology used relevant data from the MixMarket and Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA) annual reports in Bangladesh. Results - We argue that an interest rate ceiling is detrimental both for the clients and microfinance institutions (MFIs). This market intervention substantially reduces the outreach of MFIs and clients are most likely to pay a higher price in the long-run. Additionally, an interest rate cap also puts severe pressure on new-born and high-cost MFIs to cope with the interest rate ceiling. Conclusions - Although market intervention may be necessary in the short-run, it should not be the ultimate solution to abate high interest in microfinance. Understanding the operational dynamics of MFIs, as well as promoting productivity, efficiency and competition could help to lower the interest rates.

Ti0.3Zr0.2V0.5 합금게터의 활성화 및 수소흡수특성 (Activation and Hydrogen Sorption Characteristics of a Ti0.3Zr0.2V0.5 Alloy Getter)

  • The lowest activation temperature of a commercial vacuum getter reported so far in literature was about $400^{\circ}C$. Recently, $Ti_{0.3}Zr_{0.2}V_{0.5}$ alloy has been reported to exhibit the activation temperature lower than $200^{\circ}C$ when they are prepared as thin film. In this study, the alloy was prepared as bulk form and its activation temperature and hydrogen sorption properties were investigated in compliance with a standard method. The alloy powder was prepared by arc melting and subsequent HDH(Hydride-DeHydride) process. The activation temperature of the alloy was estimated from the ultimate pressure-temperature curve and located between $150^{\circ}C\;and\;200^{\circ}C$. The hydrogen sorption speed measured by an orifice method was 0.895 liter/sec which is comparable to thin film of same composition.

원자로 격납건물의 3차원 구조해석시스템 (Three-Dimensional Structural Analysis System for Nuclear Containment Building)

  • 본 논문에서는 원자로 격납건물의 3차원 해석을 수행할 수 있는 구조해석 시스템을 구축하여 제시하였다. 구조해석 시스템은 고성능 평판 및 쉘 유한요소를 요소 라이브러리로 추가하였고, 비부착식 텐던과 부착식 텐던의 거동을 정확하게 모사할 수 있는 모델링방법을 포함하고 있다. 이러한 기능을 프로그래밍하고 범용 구조해석프로그램 DIANA에 접목시켜 원자로 격납건물의 비선형해석은 물론이고 내압능력 평가가 가능하다. 본 논문에서 제안한 3차원 구조해석 시스템의 신뢰성을 확인하기 위해 중수로형 원자로 격납건물의 구조해석을 수행하여 다른 기관에서 수행한 축대칭 구조해석 결과와 비교분석하였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 원자력병원에 설치된 50MeV-proton싸이클로트론의 진공계통에 관한 일반적인 특성과 측정된 진공결과를 기술하고 있다. 진공장치는 5개의 그룹으로 구성되어 있으며, 동작순서는 EPROM-PC장치에 의해 자동제어된다. 정상가동중의 도달 진공도는 각각 $5{\times}10^{-6}mbar(I,\;II),\;2{\times}10^{-6}mbar(III),\;1.2{\times}10^{-5}mbar(IV),\;1.5{\times}10^{-6}mbar(V)$였으며 이 진공도는 50MeV-proton빔을 가속하기에 충분함을 보여 주었다.

High Temperature Properties of Fiber Reinforced Composites under the Different Loading Conditions

  • The mechanical properties of composites are significantly affected by external environment. It is essential to understand the degradation of material performance and judge the material's lifetime in advance. In the current research, changes in mechanical properties of glass fiber and unsaturated polyester composite materials (GFRP, Glass fiber reinforced plastic) were investigated under different bending stress and submerged in hot water at a temperature of $80^{\circ}C$. Loading time of 100 H (hours), 200 H, 400 H, 600 H, 800 H for testing under stresses equal to 0% (stress-free state), 30%, 50% and 70% of the ultimate strength was applied on the GFRP specimens. From the values of bending stress, obtained from three-point bending test, fracture energy, failure time, and life curve were analysed. Moreover, a normalized strength degradation model for this condition was also developed. It was observed that within 100 H, the decline rate of the bending strength was proportional to the pressure.
