Background: Fibers in concrete resist the growth of cracks and enhance the postcracking behavior of structures. The addition of fibers into a conventional reinforced concrete can improve the structural and functional performance of safety-related concrete structures in nuclear power plants. Methods: The influence of fibers on the ultimate internal pressure capacity of a prestressed concrete containment vessel (PCCV) was investigated through a comparison of the ultimate pressure capacities between conventional and fiber-reinforced PCCVs. Steel and polyamide fibers were used. The tension behaviors of conventional concrete and fiber-reinforced concrete specimens were investigated through uniaxial tension tests and their tension-stiffening models were obtained. Results: For a PCCV reinforced with 1% volume hooked-end steel fiber, the ultimate pressure capacity increased by approximately 12% in comparison with that for a conventional PCCV. For a PCCV reinforced with 1.5% volume polyamide fiber, an increase of approximately 3% was estimated for the ultimate pressure capacity. Conclusion: The ultimate pressure capacity can be greatly improved by introducing steel and polyamide fibers in a conventional reinforced concrete. Steel fibers are more effective at enhancing the containment performance of a PCCV than polyamide fibers. The fiber reinforcementwas shown to bemore effective at a high pressure loading and a lowprestress level.
In this study, ultimate strength characteristics of clamped sandwich panels with metal faces and an elastic isotropic core under combined in-plane compression and lateral pressure loads are investigated to verify the applicability of the ultimate strength design formula for ship structures. Alternative elastomer-cored steel sandwich panels are selected instead of the conventional bottom stiffened panels for a Suezmax-class tanker and then the ultimate strength characteristics of the selected sandwich panels are examined by using nonlinear finite element analysis. The change in the ultimate strength characteristics due to the change in the thickness of the face plate and core as well as the amplitude of lateral pressure are summarized and compared with the results obtained by using the ultimate strength design formula and nonlinear finite element analysis. The insights and conclusions developed in the present study will be useful for the design and development of applications for sandwich panels in double hull tanker structures.

Ring-stiffened cylinders are widely used as the pressure hull of submarines and underwater vehicles. For large ring-stiffened cylinders cylindrical shells are fbricated by cold rolling of flat plates and then welding of curved shells. After forming cylinders ring-stiffeners are welded on th the cylinders. Due to these cold roiling and welding initial shape imperfections and residual stresses exists in fabricated ring-stiffened cylinders. It is well known that the initial shape and material imperfections affect the ultimate strength of ring-stiffened cylinders significantly. In this paper previous researches on the effects of initial shape imperfections and residual stresses are briefly reviewed Recently a numerical analysis computer program was developed to predict the ultimate strength of ring-stiffened cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure, which is based on the Dynamic Relaxation technique. This program was employed to numerically investigate those effects. The numerical predictions were substantiated with relevant experimental results.
The present study aims to investigate the ultimate strength and geometric nonlinear behavior of composite plates containing initial imperfection subjected to combined end-shortening strain and lateral pressure loading by using a semi-analytical method. In this study, the first order shear deformation plate theory is considered with the assumption of large deflections. Regarding in-plane boundary conditions, two adjacent edges of the laminates are completely held while the two others can move straightly. The formulations are based on the concept of the principle of minimum potential energy and Newton-Raphson technique is employed to solve the nonlinear set of algebraic equations. In addition, Hashin failure criteria are selected to predict the failures. Further, two distinct models are assumed to reduce the mechanical properties of the failure location, complete ply degradation model, and ply region degradation model. Degrading the material properties is assumed to be instantaneous. Finally, laminates having a wide range of thicknesses and initial geometric imperfections with different intensities of pressure load are analyzed and discuss how the ultimate strength of the plates changes.

The ship plating is generally subjected to combined in-plane load and lateral pressure loads. In-plane loads include axial load and edge shear, which are mainly induced by overall hull girder bending and torsion of the vessel. Lateral pressure is due to water pressure and cargo. These load components are not always applied simultaneously, but more than one can normally exist and interact. Hence, for more rational and safe design of ship structures, it is of crucial importance to bitter understand the interaction relationship of the buckling and ultimate strength for ship plating under combined loads. Actual ship plates are subjected to relatively small water pressure except for the impact load due to slamming and panting etc. The present paper describes an accurate and fast procedure for analyzing the elastic-plastic large deflection behavior up to the ultimate limit state of ship plates under combined loads. In this paper, the ultimate strength characteristics of plates under axial compressive loads and lateral pressure loads are investigated through ANSYS elastic-plastic large deflection finite element analysis with varying lateral pressure load level.

This paper describes the application of the finite element method to the large deflection elastic plastic analysis and ultimate load calculation of axisymmetric shell of revolution with initial imperfection subjected to external pressure. The nonlinear equilibrium equations are linearized by the successive incremental method and are solved by the combination of load increment and iteration scheme with considering plastic deformation theory. To get the more realistic effect of large deflection, corrected coordinats and directions of applied load ar every load increment steps are used. The effects of the plasticity, initial imperfection and the shape of shells on the ultimate load of clamped circular cap under external pressure are investigated. Consequently, the following conclusions are obtained; (1) At same geometric parameter $\lambda$, each shape of clamped circular caps yield same elastic ultimate loads in both cases, i.e. with and without initial imperfections, whereas, in the case of elastic-plastic state the shell becomes thicker, the ultimate loads are getting smaller. (2) The effects of initial imperfection to ultimate load are most significant in the elastic case and are more senstive in the elastic-plastic state with the thinner shells.

In this paper, a methodology is presented for determining the optimal lamination of composite cylindrical structures subject to hydrostatic pressure. The strength criterion in association with the process of optimal design is the buckling collapse of composite cylinders under hydrostatic pressure loads. An empirical formula expressed in the form of the Merchant-Rankine equation is used to calculate the ultimate strength of filament-wound composite cylinders where genetic algorithm is applied for determining the optimized stacking sequences. It is shown that the optimized lamination provides improved collapse pressure loads. It is concluded that the developed method would be useful for the optimal lamination design of composite cylindrical structures.
Composite material is one of the strongest candidates for deep see pressure hulls. Research regarding composite cylinders, subjected to hydrostatic pressure, has been ongoing for a couple of decades, abroad, but domestic research is very new. Experimental investigations seem necessary, in order to understand their structural behavior not only up to the ultimate limit state, but in the post-ultimate regime. That experimental information will be very helpful in the development of any theoretical methods or to substantiate any commercial numerical packages for structural analyses. In this study, ultimate strength tests on seven composite cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure are reported, which includes the fabrication method of models, mechanical properties of the material, initial shape imperfection measurements, test procedure, and strain and axial shortening measurements during the tests. The ultimate strengths of the models were compared with predictions of numerical analyses. The numerical predictions are higher than the test results. It seems necessary to improve the accuracy of the numerical predictions by considering the initial shape and material imperfections.

This paper presents estimation of average compressive strengths of three types of stiffened panels under lateral pressure and axial compression based on simplified formulas from CSRs and nonlinear FEAs. FEA scenarios are prepared based on the slenderness ratios of the stiffened panels used for in-service vessels. The seven step lateral pressures by 1bar increment are imposed on FE models assuming maximum 30m water height. The number of FEAs for FB-, AB-, and TB-stiffened panels is totally 189 times. FEA results show that existence of pressure can evolves significant reduction of ultimate strengths, meanwhile CSR formulas do not take into account the lateral pressure effect. Lateral pressure acting on the stiffened panel with higher column slenderness ratio more reduces the ultimate strengths than those with smaller column slenderness ratio. A new concept of relative average compressive strain energy instead of the ultimate strength is introduced in order to rationally compare the average compressive strength through complete compressive straining regime. The differences of the ultimate strengths between CSR formulas and FEA results are relatively small for FB- and AB-stiffened panels, but larger discrepancies of relative average compressive strain energies are shown.
