For Determination of the ultimate uplift capacity, the failure mechanism of the foundation by uplift should be correctly known. However, studies on the variation of the failure mechanism with the embedment ratio of anchor plate among those factors governing the uplift resistance are scarce. In this study. in an attempt to observe more clearly the variation of the failure mechanism with embedment ratio and to check applicability of existing formulae for the ultimate uplift capacity. a model test was performed with ground made of carbon rods, simulating a plane strain conditions. As a result, failure characteristics of shallow and deep anchor conditions were clearly classified. It was found that the analysis of a shallow anchor should be made prior to determination of the ultimate uplift capacity of a deep anchor.
Suction anchors are widely adopted in mooring systems. However there are still challenges in predicting the failure mode and ultimate pullout capacity of the anchor. Previously published methods for predicting the inclined pullout capacity of suction anchors are mainly based on experimental data or the FEM analysis. In the present work, an analytical method that is capable of predicting the failure mode and ultimate pullout capacity of the suction anchor in clay under inclined loading is developed. This method is based on a rational mechanical model for suction anchors and the knowledge of the mechanism that the anchor fails in seabed soils. In order to examine the analytical model, the failure angle and pullout capacity of suction anchors from FEM simulation, numerical solution and laboratory tests in uniform and linear cohesive soils are employed to compare with the theoretical predictions and the agreement is satisfactory. An analytical method that can evaluate the optimal position of the attachment point is also proposed in the present study. The present work proves that the failure mode and pullout capacity of suction anchors can be reasonably determined by the developed analytical method.
To better understand the influence of hollow ratio on the hollow concrete-filled circular steel tubular (H-CFT) stub columns under axial compression and to propose the design formula of ultimate bearing capacity for H-CFT stub columns, 3D finite element analysis and laboratory experiments were completed to obtain the load-deformation curves and the failure modes of H-CFT stub columns. The changes of the confinement effect between core concrete and steel tube with different hollow ratios were discussed based on the finite element results. The result shows that the axial stress of concrete and hoop stress of steel tube in H-CFT stub columns are decreased with the increase of hollow ratio. AfteGr the yield of steel, the reduction rate of longitudinal stress and the increase rate of circumferential stress for the steel tube slowed down. The confinement effect from steel tube on concrete also weakened slowly with the increase of hollow ratio. Based on the limit equilibrium method, a simplified formula of ultimate bearing capacity for the axially loaded H-CFT stub columns was proposed. The predicted results showed satisfactory agreement with the experimental and numerical results.
The purpose of this paper is to provide an experimental and analytical study on the reinforced large diameter pretensioned high strength concrete (R-LDPHC) pile. R-LDPHC pile was reinforced with infilled concrete, longitudinal, and transverse rebar to increase the flexural and shear strength of conventional large diameter PHC (LDPHC) pile without changing dimension of the pile. To evaluate the shear and flexural strength enhancement effects of R-LDPHC piles compared with conventional LDPHC pile, a two-point loading tests were conducted under simple supported conditions. Nonlinear analysis on the basis of the conventional layered sectional approach was also performed to evaluate effects of infilled concrete and longitudinal rebar on the flexural strength of conventional LDPHC pile. Moreover, ultimate strength design method was adopted to estimate the effect of transverse rebar and infilled concrete on the shear strength of a pile. The analytical results were compared with the results of the bending and shear test. Test results showed that the flexural strength and shear strength of R-LDPHC pile were increased by 2.3 times and 3.3 times compared to those of the conventional LDPHC pile, respectively. From the analytical study, it was found that the flexural strength and shear strength of R-LDPHC pile can be predicted by the analytical method by considering rebar and infilled concrete effects, and the average difference of flexural strength between experimental results and calculated result was 10.5% at the ultimate state.

The ultimate behavior of high-strength concrete beams is studied with respect to their strength. Thirteen beams were analyzed and the results are presented herein. The variable parameters were the concrete's compressive strength, from 57 to 184 MPa and the amount of lateral torsional reinforcement, from 0.35 to 1.49%. The ultimate torsional strengths from tests were compared with those by this proposed theory and by the ACI code. As a consequence, The ultimate torsional strengths by this proposed theory show the better results than those by the ACI code.
A total of 104 laboratory model tests on a square footing subjected to eccentrically inclined loads supported by sand reinforced with randomly distributed polypropylene fibers were conducted in order to compare the results with those obtained from unreinforced sand and with each other. For conducting the model tests, uniform sand was compacted in a test box at one particular relative density of compaction. The effect of percentage of reinforcement used, thickness of the reinforced layer, angle of inclination of load to vertical and eccentricity of load applied on various prominent factors such as ultimate load, vertical settlement, horizontal deformation and tilt were investigated. An improvement in ultimate load, vertical settlement, horizontal deformation and tilt of foundation was observed with an increase in the percentage of fibers used and thickness of reinforced sand layer under different inclinations and eccentricities of load. A statistical model using non-linear regression analysis based on present experimental data for predicting the vertical settlement ($s_p$), horizontal deformation ($hd_p$) and tilt ($t_p$) of square footing on reinforced sand at any load applied was done where the dependent variable was predicted settlement ($s_p$), horizontal deformation ($hd_p$) and tilt ($t_p$) respectively.
In a pressurized heavy water reactor, following loss of the primary coolant, severe core damage would begin with the depletion of the liquid moderator, exposing the top row of internally-voided fuel channels to steam cooling conditions on the inside and outside. The uncovered fuel channels would heat up, deform and disassemble into core debris. Large inventories of water passively reduce the rate of progression of the accident, prolonging the time for complete loss of engineered heat sinks. The efficacy of available backup and ultimate heat sinks, available in a CANDU 6 reactor, in mitigating the consequences of a prolonged station blackout scenario was analysed using the MAAP4-CANDU code. The analysis indicated that the steam generator secondary side water inventory is the most effective heat sink during the accident. Additional heat sinks such as the primary coolant, moderator, calandria vault water and end shield water are also able to remove decay heat; however, a gradually increasing mismatch between heat generation and heat removal occurs over the course of the postulated event. This mismatch is equivalent to an additional water inventory estimated to be 350,000 kg at the time of calandria vessel failure. In the Enhanced CANDU 6 reactor ~2,040,000 kg of water in the reserve water tank is available for prolonged emergencies requiring heat sinks.

This paper presents the design procedure of the suction bucket used to support a subsea manifold. The soil-suction bucket interaction numerical analysis technique was verified by comparing the present results with a reference data. In order to simulate the soil-bucket interaction analyses of a subsea manifold structure, various material data such as undrained shear strength, elastic modulus, and poisson ratio of soft clay in Gulf of Mexico were collected from reference survey. We proposed vertical and horizontal design loads based on system weights and current-induced drag forces. Under the assumption that diameter of the suction bucket was 3.0 m considering real dimension of the subsea manifold frame structures, aspect ratio was decided to be 3.0 based on reference survey. The ultimate bearing load components were determined using tangent intersection method. It was proved that the two design load components were less than ultimate bearing loads.
The main role of studs, which act as connectors of the steel-concrete composite structures, is to ensure that the steel and the concrete work together as a whole. The studs in steel-concrete composite structures bear the shearing force in the majority of cases, but in certain locations, such as the mid-span of a simply supported composite beam, the studs bear axial uplift force. The previous studies mainly focused on the shearing performance of the stud by some experimental and theoretical effort. However, rare studies involved the uplift performance of studs. In this paper, the single stud uplift test on 10 composite specimens was performed. Meanwhile, based on the test, numerical analysis was introduced to simulate the concrete damage process due to the stud uplifted from concrete. The static ultimate bearing capacity, under which the stud connector was pulled out from the damaged reinforced concrete, is much larger than the cyclic ultimate bearing capacity, under which the weld joint between stud and steel plate fractured. According to the fatigue test results of 7 specimens, the fatigue S-N curve of the construction detail after minus 2 times standard deviation is $logN=24.011-9.171\;log{\Delta}{\sigma}$, the fatigue strength corresponding to $2{\times}10^6$ cycles is 85.33 MPa.

This paper presents a series of ultimate and fatigue experimental investigation on concrete-filled rectangular hollow section (CRHS) X joints with Perfobond Leister rib (PBR) under tension. A total of 15 specimens were fabricated, in which 12 specimens were tested under ultimate tension and 3 specimens were investigated in fatigue test. Different parameters including PBR stiffening, brace-to-chord ratio (${\beta}$) and inclined angle (${\theta}$) were considered in the test. Each joint was tested to failure under tension load. Obtained from test result, PBR was found to improve the tension strength and fatigue durability of CRHS joint substantially. Concrete dowel consisted by PBR and concrete inside the chord stiffened the joint, which leaded to a combination failure mode of punching shear and chord plastification of CRHS joint under tension. Finite element analysis validated the compound failure mode. Stress concentration on typical spot of CRHS joint was mitigated by PBR which was observed from fatigue test. Initial fatigue crack presented in CRHS joint with PBR also differentiated with the counterpart without PBR.
