The Use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for Monitoring Individuals of Ardeidae Species in Breeding Habitat: A Case study on Natural Monument in Sinjeop-ri, Yeoju, South Korea (백로류 집단번식지의 개체수 모니터링을 위한 무인항공기 활용연구 - 천연기념물 209호 여주 신접리 백로와 왜가리 번식지를 대상으로 -)

  • In this research, it is a basic study to investigate the population of birds using UAVs. The research area is Ardeidae species(ASP) habitat and has long-term monitoring. The purpose of the study is to compare the ASP populations which analyzed ground observational survey and UAVs imagery. We used DJI's Mavic pro and Phantom4 for this research. Before investigating the population of ASP, we measured the escape distance by the UAVs, and the escape distances of the two UAVs models were statistically significant. Such a result would be different in UAV size and rotor(rotary wing) noise. The population of ASP who analyzed the ground observation and UAVs imagery count differed greatly. In detail, the population(mean) on the ground observation was 174.9, and the UAVs was 247.1 ~ 249.9. As a result of analyzing the UAVs imagery, These results indicate that the lower the UAVs camera altitude, the higher the ASP population, and the lower the UAVs camera altitude, the higher the resolution of the images and the better the reading of the individual of ASP. And we confirmed analyzed images taken at various altitudes, the individuals of ASP was not statistically significant. This is because the resolution of the phantom was superior to that of mavic pro. Our research is fundamental compared to similar studies. However, long-term monitoring for ASP of South Korea's by ground observation is a barrier of the reliability of the monitoring result. We suggested how to use UAVs which can improve long-term monitoring for ASP habitat.

Power System Optimization for Electric Hybrid Unmanned Drone (전동 하이브리드 무인 드론의 동력 계통 최적화)

  • For drones to be used for industrial or agricultural applications, it is necessary to increase the payload and endurance. Currently, the payload and endurance are limited by the battery technology for electric powered drones. In addition, charging or replacing the batteries may not be a practical solution at the field that requires near continuous operation. In this paper, a procedure to optimize the power system of an electric hybrid drone that consists of an internal combustion engine, a generator, a battery, and electric motors is presented. The example drone for crop dusting is sized for easy transportation with a maximum takeoff weight of 200 kg. The two main rotors that are mechanically connected to the internal combustion engine provides most of the lift. The drone is controled by four electric motors that are driven by the generator. By analyzing the flow of the energy, a methodology to select the optimum propeller and motor among the commercially available models is described. Then, a procedure of finding the optimum operational condition along with the proper gear reduction ratios for the internal combustion engine based on the test data is presented.

  • Satellite and aircraft components are greatly affected by the possibility for missions and safety due to temperature effects. In the field of fuel cells, research is actively carried out for UAV. For the efficiency and stability of the fuel cells, the temperature for operations must be confirmed. In this paper, a smart paint was fabricated with $BaTiO_3$ and $SrTiO_3$ ceramics in order to take advantage of the rapid characteristics of the PTC thermistor, which is the resistance changes abruptly above the Curie point. A coating agent was prepared to prevent the paint from peeling off the samples and the coated models were checked for resistance changes. Moreover, the resistance change of the $BaTiO_3$ and $SrTiO_3$ with temperature conditions was measured before and after coating.

  • As an essential part of the urban transportation system, precise perception of the traffic flow parameters at the traffic signal intersection ensures traffic safety and fully improves the intersection's capacity. Traditional detection methods of road traffic flow parameter can be divided into the micro and the macro. The microscopic detection methods include geomagnetic induction coil technology, aerial detection technology based on the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and camera video detection technology based on the fixed scene. The macroscopic detection methods include floating car data analysis technology. All the above methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Recently, indoor location methods based on wireless signals have attracted wide attention due to their applicability and low cost. This paper extends the wireless signal indoor location method to the outdoor intersection scene for traffic flow parameter estimation. In this paper, the detection scene is constructed at the intersection based on the received signal strength indication (RSSI) ranging technology extracted from the wireless signal. We extracted the RSSI data from the wireless signals sent to the road side unit (RSU) by the vehicle nodes, calibrated the RSSI ranging model, and finally obtained the traffic flow parameters of the intersection entrance road. We measured the average speed of traffic flow through multiple simulation experiments, the trajectory of traffic flow, and the spatiotemporal map at a single intersection inlet. Finally, we obtained the queue length of the inlet lane at the intersection. The simulation results of the experiment show that the RSSI ranging positioning method based on wireless signals can accurately estimate the traffic flow parameters at the intersection, which also provides a foundation for accurately estimating the traffic flow state in the future era of the Internet of Vehicles.

  • Air-breathing engines used in aircraft have a performance limit as the altitude increases, and this determines the service and absolute ceiling altitude. The method of maintaining altitude and speed in a fixed-wing aircraft in level flight using classical control method is generally using thrust for speed increase/deceleration and pitch attitude for altitude increase/decrease. If this method is used near the service ceiling altitude, increasing the pitch to reduce the altitude error results in a speed reduction. Therefore, it is necessary to use a control method that maintains the speed first using the pitch attitude. Especially in the case of unmanned aerial vehicles, these two methods should be automatically available at the right time. In this paper, we propose a method of switching the speed and altitude maintenance algorithm near service ceiling altitude.

A Study on how to use drones According to Domestic Coastal Safety System limitations (국내 연안 안전 체계 한계에 따른 드론의 활용방안)

  • In spite of various safety measures, coastal safety accidents continue to occur, so this study focused on using drones as countermeasures. Municipalities that already have coasts have begun operating unmanned multicopters for coastal safety management. In particular, by connecting an unmanned multi-copter to the currently applied smart city safety net system, it is possible to transmit real-time images of the scene in case of emergency in the coastal area to the local government safety information center. It is also expected to contribute significantly to strengthening safety management in coastal waters through a more rapid response to safety accidents. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the use of drones as an alternative to the limitations of the domestic coastal safety system by investigating the state of coastal safety accidents and analyzing the state of domestic coastal safety systems. In addition, it is expected to be a key breakthrough in the coastal area safety system by proposing a model linking the Korean K-Drone system.

Calculation of correction coefficients for the RedEdge-MX multispectral camera through intercalibration with a hyperspectral sensor (초분광센서와의 상호교정을 통한 RedEdge-MX 다분광 카메라의 보정계수 산출)

  • Spectroradiometers have recently been drawing great attention in earth observing communities for its capability for obtaining target's quantitative properties. In particular, light-weighted multispectral cameras are gaining popularity in many field domains, as being utilized on UAV's. Despite the importance of the radiometric accuracy, studies are scarce on the performance of the inexpensive multispectral camera sensors that have various applications in agricultural, vegetation, and water quality analysis. This study conducted assessment of radiometric accuracy for MicaSense RedEdge-MX multispectral camera, by comparing the radiometric data with an independent hyperspectral sensor having NIST-traceable calibration quality. The comaprison showed that radiance from RedEdge-MX is lower than that of TriOS RAMSES by 5 to 16% depending on the bands, and the irradiance from RedEdge-MX is also lower than RAMSES by 1~20%. The correction coefficients for RedEdge-MX alculated through the 1-st and the 3-rd order regression analysis were presented as a result of the study.

  • In order to accommodate the increase in urban population due to government-led national planning and economic growth, many buildings such as houses and business building were supplied. Although the building law was revised and managed to manage the supplied buildings, for the sake of economic benefit, there have been buildings that are enlarged or reconstructed without declaring building permits. In order to manage these buildings, on-site surveys were conducted. but it has many personnel consumption. To solve this problem, a method of using a satellite image and a manned aircraft is utilized, but it is diseconomical and a renewal cycle is long. In addition, it is not utilized to the height, and although it is judged by the shading of the building, it has limitations that it must be calculated individually. In this study, height of the building was calculated by using the unmanned aerial vehicle with low personnel consumption, and the accuracy was verified by comparison with the building register and measured value. In this study, spatial information was constructed using a fast unmanned aerial vehicle with low manpower consumption and the building height was calculated based on this. The accuracy by comparing the calculated building height with the building register and the actual measurement.

  • The recent earthquake of Pohang (M5.4) and the Gyeongju earthquake (M5.8) suggested the possibility of a strong earthquake in Korea and reminded us that the Korea is no longer an earthquake-safe zone. In the disaster recovery stage in a disaster like an earthquake, the investigation of the damage situation and the safety assessment of the building serve to provide important information for the initial action such as establishment of the recovery strategy and rescue of the survivor. However, the research that depends on manpower can not cope with the difficulty of processing a large number of doses in a short time, and the expertise of the manpower must be taken into consideration, which may result in delayed initial action. In this study, we propose an rapid safety evaluation technique of building using unmanned aerial vehicle which evaluates the performance and safety of buildings by integrating conventional safety inspection method with unmanned aerial vehicle technology and developed evaluation method of each evaluation factor. In order to verify this, the buildings damaged by the earthquake in Pohang were checked and compared using this system. The results are consistent with the results of the existing emergency earthquake risk assessment. As a result, the possibility of checking the emergency safety using the unmanned aerial vehicle for the damaged structures in case of a large-scale disaster such as an earthquake was confirmed.

A Study of Automatic Recognition on Target and Flame Based Gradient Vector Field Using Infrared Image (적외선 영상을 이용한 Gradient Vector Field 기반의 표적 및 화염 자동인식 연구)

  • This paper presents a algorithm for automatic target recognition robust to the influence of the flame in order to track the target by EOTS(Electro-Optical Targeting System) equipped on UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) when there is aerial target or marine target with flame at the same time. The proposed method converts infrared images of targets and flames into a gradient vector field, and applies each gradient magnitude to a polynomial curve fitting technique to extract polynomial coefficients, and learns them in a shallow neural network model to automatically recognize targets and flames. The performance of the proposed technique was confirmed by utilizing the various infrared image database of the target and flame. Using this algorithm, it can be applied to areas where collision avoidance, forest fire detection, automatic detection and recognition of targets in the air and sea during automatic flight of unmanned aircraft.
