Adaptive Modulation Method using Non-Line-of-Sight Identification Algorithm in LDR-UWB Systems

  • Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation can severely weaken the accuracy of ranging and localization in wireless location systems. NLOS bias mitigation techniques have recently been proposed to relieve the NLOS effects, but positively rely on the capability to accurately distinguish between LOS and NLOS propagation scenarios. This paper proposes an energy-capture-based NLOS identification method for LDR-UWB systems, based on the analysis of the characteristics of the channel impulse response (CIR). With this proposed energy capture method, the probability of successfully identifying NLOS is much improved than the existing methods, such as the kurtosis method, the strongest path compare method, etc. This NLOS identification method can be employed in adaptive modulation scheme to decrease bit error ratio (BER) level for certain signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The BER performance with the adaptive modulation can be significantly enhanced by selecting proper modulation method with the knowledge of channel information from the proposed NLOS identification method.

  • An ultra high frequency (UHF) coupler possessing ultra wide band (UWB) characteristics ranging from hundreds of MHz to several GHz is desirable for the detection of the partial discharge (PD) pulses because the pulses propagate with rise time shorter than one nanosecond in a gas-insulated substation (GIS). Thus, the authors have proposed a log-periodic antenna for GIS PD detection. Various parameters of the coupler such as frequency bandwidth, coupler gain, radiation pattern, and coupler geometry were considered throughout the simulations. The experiments for the detection characteristics of the coupler were carried out in the mock-up GIS chamber. The results indicated that the detection characteristics of the coupler are dependent on the installation angle of the coupler, the position of the coupler in the hand hole and the existence of the spacer.

  • Recently, a container shipping volume has increased dramatically and continued on a trend of rapid growth, and so the number of container handled at the port increase. therefore, it's increasing about concern of harbor automatism to save distribution costs in harbor. harbor automatism classifies into four large automatism's, gate automatism by using RFID that trailer come with burdening the container to be loaded on ships go though with RFID and Quay-Side container crane automatism that treats cargos loading on ships and automatism of CG that loads containers from yard, and automatism of container transporters that carries containers in between gates. To increase the using efficiency of harbor, detecting exact location of yard crane is very important matter. In this paper, it intends to discuss about yard crane automatism applied UWB Ranging system and bring up the development direction.

  • In Ubiquitous Society, accurate Location Calculation of user's device is required to achieve the need of users. As the location calculation is processed by ranging between transceivers, if some obstacles exist between transceivers, NLoS(Non-line-of-Sight) components of received signal increase along with the reduction of LoS(Line-of-Sight) components. Therefore the location calculation error will increase due to the NLoS effect. The conventional location calculation algorithm has the original ranging error because there is no transformation of ranging information which degrades the ranging accuracy. The Iterative Calculation method which minimizes the location calculation error relys on accurately identifying NLoS or LoS condition of the tested channel. We employ Kurtosis, Mean Excess Delay and RMS Delay spread of the received signal to identify whether the tested channel is LoS or NLoS firstly. Thereafter, to minimize location calculation error, the proposed Iterative Calculation method iteratively select random range and finds the averaged target location which has high probability. The simulation results confirm the enhancement of the proposed method.

A Study on the Location Awareness System Using TOA(Time of Arrival) of CSS(Chirp Spread Spectrum) Algorithm (CSS 기반의 TOA 알고리즘을 이용한 위치인식 시스템 구현에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we propose the Location Awareness System adjusting Ranging Technology for CSS(Chirp Spread Spectrum) which is adopted on 2.45GHz standard in IEEE 802.15.4a and TOA(Time-of-Arrival) algorithm. The conventional methods have adopted RSSI, ultrasonic waves and infrared rays in Zigbee. RSSI measures strength indication of received signal and recognizes the position of nodes in RF boundary. However, this technology has the following problems; lots of error by the change of the channel environment and much power consumption. In this paper, adopting chirp pulse on 2.45GHz standard in IEEE 802.15.4a and SDS-TWR(Symmetrical Double Side-Two Way Ranging) method using the characteristic of Spread Spectrum, a new Location Awareness System is suggested. The distance and the coordinate are measured within ${\pm}\;5cm$ by TOA(Time of Arrival) algorithm and proposed algorithm and the data in error rate is decreased less than 1%. Through these results, the algorithm suggested in this paper is verified for its performance in a computer simulation.

  • Ultra-wideband communication systems for impulse radio have merits that are possible for either high resolution ranging system or radio determination. Conventionally, in order to accomplish these functions, the rapid analog to digital convertor (ADC) is necessary to apply radio determination system operating in time domain. However, considering that low rate - wireless personal area network (LR-WPAN) aims to low-cost hardware implementation, the expensive ADC converting GHz sampling per second is not appropriate. So, this paper introduces the high resolution ranging system operating in frequency domain with using low sampling rate ADC, and a new non-coherent ranging scheme utilizing analog Frequency Modulation (FM) mode for the frequency domain transformation. To verify the superiority of the proposed ranging algorithm working in frequency domain, the suggested IEEE 802.15.4a TG channel model is used to exploit affirmative features of the proposed algorithm with conducting the simulation results.

Performance Analysis of Noncoherent OOK UWB Transceiver for LR-WPAN (저속 WPAN용 비동기 OOK 방식 UWB 송수신기 성능 분석)

  • IEEE802.15.4a, which is started to realize the PHY layer including high precision ranging/positioning and low data rate communication functions, requires a simple and low power consumable transceiver architecture. To satisfy this requirements, the simple noncoherent on-off keying (OOK) UWB transceiver with the parallel energy window banks (PEWB) giving high precision signal processing interface is proposed. The flexibility of the proposed system in multipath fading channel environments is acquired with the pulse and bit repetition method. To analyze the bit error rate (BER) performance of this proposed system, a noise model in receiver is derived with commonly used random variable distribution, chi-square. BER of $10^{-5}$ under the line-of-sight (LOS) residential channel is achieved with the integration time of 32 ns and signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 15.3 dB. For the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) outdoor channel, the integration time of 72 ns and SNR of 16.2 dB are needed. The integrated energy to total received energy (IRR) for the best BER performance is about $86\%$.

  • Ranging is divided into a synchronous scheme and an asynchronous scheme according to the presence of global synchronization between nodes. In general, the asynchronous ranging is preferred over synchronous ranging because it does not require an expensive high-precision oscillator for the global synchronization. On the other hand, in a conventional asynchronous ranging scheme, the packets, which are generated by all nodes in a positioning system of a large-scale infrastructure and need to be sent for localization by reference nodes, are considerable, which cause an increase in network traffic as the number of nodes increases. The traffic congestion lowers the throughput of the network leading to a considerable loss of energy. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a ranging scheme, in which virtual transmission slots randomly and discretely selected by a plurality of nodes are used to reduce the overheads needed in synchronizing the nodes, and the ranging is performed asynchronously based on the virtual transmission slots, thereby decreasing the network traffic. In addition, a performance test proved that the proposed ranging scheme was stronger than the TWR and SDS-TWR on an error range, even though the intensity of traffic was very low.

To verify the superiority of the proposed ranging and location algorithm working in frequency domain, the suggested IEEE 802.15.4a TG channel model is used to exploit affirmative features of the proposed algorithm with conducting the simulation results.

  • Recently, indoor navigation has been applied in large convention centers by using wireless sensor networks (WSNs), which provide not only a user's path to be traveled but also orientation and shopping information to increase user's convenience. This paper presents the localization system for estimating relative coordinates without pre-deployment of the reference node based on ultra wide band (UWB) ranging system, which is relatively suitable for indoor localization compared to other wireless communications, and azimuth sensor. The proposed localization system which consists of an azimuth sensor and a mobile node composed of three nodes estimates relative coordinates of the reference node without applying any recursive and time consumption algorithms. Also, in the process of estimating relative coordinates of the reference node, ranging errors are minimized through the proposed technique and the number of nodes can be reduced. Experimental results show the feasibility and validity of the proposed system.
