Phototoxicity of Melatonin

  • melatonin (MLT), N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, is mainly secreted by the pineal gland. The ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR) and 1H-NMR spectra of irradiated and non-irradiated MLT were measured, and phototoxicity tests of MLT, anthracence (positive control) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS, negative control) were performed. The methods employed include both in vitro test such as MTS assay using the human fibroblast cell and yeast growth inhibition assay using Candida albicans and in vivo method using the skin of guinea pig. UV absorption spectra and 1H-NMR spectra of MLT were changed by UVA (365 nm, 15 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$), but IR spectra of MLT were not changed. The fifty percent inhibitory concentration (IC50) ratio (UV-/UV+) of MLT was 10. The inhibition zone of irradiated-paper disks treated with MLT was not observed. According to the results of histophathological examination, no pathologic lesion was observed in the non-irradiated group, but slight degeneration of keratinocytes in the epidermis, homorrhage and vasodilation in dermis were observed in the irradiated group. These results indicated that the molecular structure of MLT is altered by UVA to unidentified photoproducts and a moderate phototoxicity of MLT is predicted.

Enhanced Self-Cleaning Performance of Ag-F-Codoped TiO2/SiO2 Thin Films

  • Highly self-cleaning thin films of $TiO_2-SiO_2$ co-doped with Ag and F are prepared by the sol-gel method. The asprepared thin films consist of bottom $SiO_2$ and top $TiO_2$ layers which are modified by doping with F, Ag and F-Ag elements. XRD analysis confirms that the prepared thin film is a crystalline anatase phase. UV-vis spectra show that the light absorption of $Ag-F-TiO_2/SiO_2$ thin films is tuned in the visible region. The self-cleaning properties of the prepared films are evaluated by a water contact angle measurement under UV light irradiation. The photocatalytic performances of the thin films are studied using methylene blue dye under both UV and visible light irradiation. The $Ag-F-TiO_2/SiO_2$ thin films exhibit higher photocatalytic activity under both UV and visible light compared with other samples of pure $TiO_2$, Ag-doped $TiO_2$, and F-doped $TiO_2$ films.

Hygroscopicity and Ultraviolet (UV) Deterioration Characteristics of Finished Woods

  • This study investigated the hygroscopicity and UV deterioration characteristics of 3 domestic and 4 imported woods using natural oil, stain, and varnish paints. In terms of hygroscopicity, it was found that the hygroscopicity of the painted wood was lower than that of the unpainted wood, and that as the number of coatings increased, the hygroscopicity decreased. In terms of anti-absorption, oil-based chemical paints showed higher resistance than water-based paints, and natural oils showed results comparable to oil-based paints. As for the UV deterioration, the amount of color change of the painted wood was lower than that of the unpainted wood, and there was no significant difference according to the number of times of painting. The amount of color change was found to be low in oil-based paints and hardwoods. Through this study, we confirmed effective moisture blocking and small color changes during painting using paints, and it is believed that wood can be protected from internal and external defects through selective and efficient painting based on data for excellent painting performance.

하천 분광특성을 이용한 수질항목 모니터링 연구 - 울산 지역 (Monitoring of Water Quality Parameters using Spectroscopic Characteristics of River Water - Ulsan Area)

  • Spectroscopic characteristics of river water from four major watersheds in the Ulsan area were measured to examine their potential for estimating water quality parameters. The total 176 river samples were collected from 44 sites of small streams within the watersheds during the year 2006. Spectroscopic characteristics investigated included protein-like fluorescence (FLF) intensity, fulvic-like fluorescence (FLF) intensity, terrestrial humic-like fluorescence (TLF) intensity, UV absorbance at 254 nm, and UV absorbance difference at 220 nm and 254 nm. Protein-like fluorescence intensity showed linear relationships with biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorous (TP) concentrations of the samples with the correlation of 0.784, 0.779, and 0.733, respectively. Due to the UV absorption characteristics of nitrate at 220 nm, UV absorbance difference at 220 nm and 254 nm was selected to represent total nitrogen (TN) concentration. Exclusion of some samples with PLF intensity higher than 5.0 improved the correlation between the UV absorbance difference and TN as demonstrated by the increase of the correlation coefficient from 0.392 to 0.784. Instead, for the samples with PLF intensity lower than 5.0, the highest correlation of TN was achieved with UV absorbance at 254 nm. The results suggest that PLF intensity could be used as the estimation index for BOD, COD, and TP concentration of river water, and as the primary screening index for the prediction of TN using UV absorbance difference. Some BOD-based water quality levels among the river water were statistically discriminated by the PLF intensity. Low p-values were obtained from the t-tests on the samples with the first level and the second level (p=0.0003) and the samples with the second and the third levels (p=0.0413). Our combined results demonstrated that the selected spectroscopic characteristics of river water could be utilized as a tool for on-site real-time monitoring and/or the primary estimation of water quality.

Evaluating the Degree of Macrodispersion of Carbon Nanotubes using UV-VIS-NIR Absorption Spectroscopy

  • We measured the degree of macrodispersion of the various single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using UV-VIS-NIR absorption spectroscopy. CNTs were dispersed with SDS of 2 wt % in deionized water using the homogenizer and then were further centrifugated at 6000 g for 10 min. The degree of macrodispersion, expressed by $D_m({\lambda})=A_a({\lambda})/A_b({\lambda})^*100$ (%), where ${\lambda}$ is the wavelength and $A_a({\lambda})$ and $A_b({\lambda})$ are the absorbance of the sample after and before centrifugation, respectively. In the case of MWCNTs, we evaluated the degree of macrodispersion by the average degree of macrodispersion ($D_m({\lambda})$) between 1000 and 1200 nm. The degree of macrodispersion of SWCNTs was evaluated at the wavelength in which van Hove singularity-related transition regions were excluded, i.e., the range was chosen between ${E_{11}}^S$ and ${E_{22}}^S$ peaks. We have estimated six samples with the same method. The standard deviation of each sample was lower than 5. Therefore, we presented a reliable evaluation method for the macrodispersion of CNTs for standardization.

개구리밥 추출물 및 개구리밥과 곰보배추 혼합 추출물로 염색한 면직물의 염색성 및 기능성 (Dyeing Properties and Functionality of Cotton Dyed with Extract from Spirodela polyrhiza and Mixture Extracts from Spirodela polyrhiza and Salvia plebeia R. Br.)

  • This study looks into the dyeing properties and functionality of cotton fabrics dyed in both the Spirodela polyrhiza extract and the extract resulting from the mixture of Salvia plebeia R. Br. and Spirodela polyrhiza. Since the UV-Vis Spectrum of the methanol extract of Spirodela polyrhiza shows absorption peaks at 256, 268nm, and 345nm, it can be inferred that the compound that Spirodela polyrhiza contains is a flavonoid. In addition, it can also be presumed that, by analyzing the infrared absorption spectrum of Spirodela polyrhiza, the plant contains flavonoid compounds, just like Salvia plebeia R. Br.. The UV protection factors of the cotton fabrics dyed in both the Spirodela polyrhiza extract and the extract from the mixture of Salvia plebeia R. Br. and Spirodela polyrhiza were 50+, presenting outstanding UV protection factors. The deodorization rate of the cotton dyed in the Spirodela polyrhiza extract was between 30 and 120 minutes, and the rate rose from 92% to 97% as time passed. The deodorization rate of the cotton dyed in the extract from the mixture of Salvia plebeia R. Br. and Spirodela polyrhiza increased from 88% to more than 91%. The result also revealed that overall the fastness of color, including color fastness to washing related to change in color, as well as the color fastness to light of the fabric dyed in the extract from the mixture of the two plants improved, compared to the cloth dyed only in Spirodela polyrhiza extract. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity was also strengthened.

Glycothermal법에 의한 ZnS 분말 합성 및 광촉매 특성 (Fabrication of ZnS Powder by Glycothermal Method and Its Photocatalytic Properties)

  • ZnS powder was synthesized using a relatively facile and convenient glycothermal method at various reaction temperatures. ZnS was successfully synthesized at temperatures as low as $125^{\circ}C$ using zinc acetate and thiourea as raw materials, and diethylene glycol as the solvent. No mineralizers or precipitation processes were used in the fabrication, which suggests that the spherical ZnS powders were directly prepared in the glycothermal method. The phase composition, morphology, and optical properties of the prepared ZnS powders were characterized using XRD, FE-SEM, and UV-vis measurements. The prepared ZnS powders had a zinc blende structure and showed average primary particles with diameters of approximately 20~30 nm, calculated from the XRD peak width. All of the powders consisted of aggregated secondary powders with spherical morphology and a size of approximately $0.1{\sim}0.5{\mu}m$; these powders contained many small primary nanopowders. The as-prepared ZnS exhibited strong photo absorption in the UV region, and a red-shift in the optical absorption spectra due to the improvement in powder size and crystallinity with increasing reaction temperature. The effects of the reaction temperature on the photocatalytic properties of the ZnS powders were investigated. The photocatalytic properties of the as-synthesized ZnS powders were evaluated according to the removal degree of methyl orange (MO) under UV irradiation (${\lambda}=365nm$). It was found that the ZnS powder prepared at above $175^{\circ}C$ exhibited the highest photocatalytic degradation, with nearly 95 % of MO decomposed through the mediation of photo-generated hydroxyl radicals after irradiation for 60 min. These results suggest that the ZnS powders could potentially be applicable as photocatalysts for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants.

청색(靑色) 사파이어의 열처리(熱處理)와 분광학적(分光學的) 특성(特性) (Heat Treatment and UV-Spectral Characteristics of Blue Sapphires from Shantung, China)

  • For the blue sapphires from Santung, China, the color change before and after has been investigated by UV-Visible spectrophotometry method. The blue sapphires from Shantung show four groups of absorption bands: the bands A (374, 386 and 450 nm) being attributed to single $Fe^{3+}$ ion, the band B (560, 579 and $704n{\breve{m}}$) to $Fe^{2+}$/$Ti^{4+}$ pairs, the band C (-800 nm) to $Fe^{2+}$/$Fe^{3+}$ pairs, and the D (528 nm) to $Ti^{3+}$ dd transitions. From those UV-VIS characteristics the origin of blue color of the sapphires is confirmed to be attributed by the factors such as $Fe^{2+}$/$Fe^{3+}$ and $Ti^{3+}$/$Ti^{4+}$. The absorption spectra of natural blue sapphires before and after heat treatment show distintive features, comparing with those of sapphires from other localities: the bands of 689 nm and of $Cr^{3+}$ are not recorded on the spectra of sapphires from Shantung. The band (492 nm), which resulted from $Ti^{3+}$, is not shown and the intensity of the band 528 nm decreases after the heat treatment. Decoloration of ink-blue sapphires are found to be successful by heat treatment with the control of annealing and atmosphere. During the diffusion process the excess components of impurities contained originally in the host crystal were expelled to the surface of crystals, enhancing the transparency of the crystals noticeably.

Azomethine계 화합물의 분광학적 특성과 전기적 특성에 관한 연구 (The study on the spectroscopic and electrical properties of Azomethine compounds)

  • Polyazine, polyazomethine ( I ) 및 ( II )는 각각 p-benzoquinone과 hydrazine hydrate, p-phenylenediamine, 그리고 diaminomaleonitrile을 dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO)하에서 중합하여 얻었다. Polyazine, polyazomethine ( I ) 및 ( II )의 IR spectra 분석결과 $1600cm^{-1}$ 부근에서 Schiff base의 특성 peak인 -C=N-를 확인하였다. 또한 각 polyazine, polyazomethine ( I ) 및 ( II )를 conc. $H_2SO_4$에 용해시켜 UV/VIS spectrum 측정결과 protonate (>$C\limits^{\small\oplus}=NH-$)에 해당되는 것으로 생각되는 흡수 band가 300nm 부근에서 나타났으며 350~415nm 부근에서 전하이동전이와 같은 흡수로 생각되는 흡수 band가 나타났다. Polyazine, Polyazomethine ( I ) 및 ( II )의 자체 전기전도도는 약 $10^{-14}{\sim}10^{-11}{\Omega}^{-1}cm^{-1}$로 나타났으며 $I_2$를 도핑한 후 최고 전기전도도가 $10^{-2}{\Omega}^{-1}cm^{-1}$ 정도로 약 $10^{12}{\sim}10^9$배 향상되었다.

미강의 약리성분 감마-오리자놀의 정량 (Quantitative Analysis of ${\gamma}-oryzanol$ in Rice Bran)

  • 미강에 함유된 약리성분인 ${\gamma}-oryzanol$ 함량을 검정하여 용도 다양화 연구의 기초 자료를 제공코자 시험을 수행한 바 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. Soxhlet 추출장치에서 얻은 미강유에서 유리 sterol과 ferulic acid ester가 분리되었다. 유리 sterol은 GC-MS에 의하여 campesterol, ${\beta}-sitosterol$ 및 stigmasterol로 구성되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. ferulic acid ester는 알칼리 가수분해에 의하여 얻어지는 검화분해물을 분리용 TLC로 분리하여 triterpene과 sterol을 얻었다. sterol은 GC-MS 측정으로 유리 sterol과 같은 조성임을 알았으며 triterpene은 cycloartanol, cycloartenol, 24-methylenecycloartanol 및 미지의 triterpene로 구성되었다. 미강유나 pitch 중 ferulic acid ester의 흡광도를 기준으로 ${\gamma}-oryzanol$의 함량을 평가한다면 큰 오차는 없으리라 생각된다.
