  • The aim of this study is to evaluate several plant extracts with a view to developing UV sunscreen agents. In this study, 150 plant extracts were screened to elucidate their UV spectra using spectrophotometric method. Several plant extracts such as Phellodendron amurense, Morus alba, Rhododendron mucronulatum, Brassica alba have strong absorbency at UVA region (350nm), the suntanning wavelength. And Sophora flavescens, Caesalpinia sapper, Morus alba, Phellodendron amurense, showed absorption plateau value at UVB region (308nm), the erythema action wavelength. These extracts have a good absorbency property as synthetic filter and could be served as substitutes for synthetic UV sunscreen agents.

  • The quantum mechanical properties of a series of oligo-para-phenylenes (2-11) were characterized using DFT B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) calculations. The global minimum among the various torsional conformers of an oligo-p-phenylene is calculated to be a twist conformation. A less stable planar conformation, in which all the dihedral angles in oligo-p-phenylene are restricted to be planar, has also been calculated. The total electronic energies, normal vibrational modes, Gibbs free energies, and HOMOs and LUMOs of the two different conformations (twisted and planar) of the oligo-p-phenylenes were analyzed. The energy differences between the HOMOs and LUMOs of the substrates are in accord with the maximum absorption peaks of the experimental UV spectra of 2-6. The calculated normal vibrational modes of 2-6 were comparable with their experimental IR spectra.

  • $CeO_2$ nanorings were synthesized by using a surfactant free hydrothermal method. The surface morphology, structural and optical properties of the synthesized $CeO_2$ was investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and ultraviolet-visible (UV) spectroscopy measurements. SEM images showed that the surface morphology of the formed $CeO_2$ appeared as nanorings. The XRD pattern of $CeO_2$ nanorings showed the presence of the polycrystalline $CeO_2$ phase readily indexed to the cubic fluorite structure of the $CeO_2$. The mean crystallite size of the $CeO_2$ was calculated using the Scherrer equation from the XRD line broadening of the (111) planes of the cubic $CeO_2$. The UV-Visible spectroscopy spectrum of the $CeO_2$ nanorings exhibited a strong UV absorption band around 350 nm.

  • Photo-crosslinkable polyimide(PI) which contains CF3 moiety was synthesized. Polarized UV light transformed ketone group of PI to hydroxyl group, which was confirmed by IR and UV-visible spectroscopy. We investigated the dichroic UV-absorption before and after photo-reaction with linearly polarized light. In particular we have attempted to clarify the relationship between the anisotropy of surface region and surface azimuthal anchoring energy and knew that the anchoring energy of photo-alignment PI is comparable with that of mechanical rubbing.

  • The optical properties of TiO$_2$ thin films dispersed in epoxy film, which were prepared with bits-(4,4'-P-toluenesulfonylacidic isoproplyidene) cycolhexadiol(BTSPC) and UVI 6990 in dry sol-gel process, were investigated. In the case of irradiating UV light on TiO$_2$ thin films, how many nanoparticles of TiO$_2$ are dispersed in epoxy film was investigated by AFM. The absorption peak of the films was showed at 360nm. Squarylium dye was dispersed in TiO$_2$-epoxy film. Photodegration concerned with amount of dye and time of UV light irradiation was investigated. UV light irradiation on the film occurred dramatical photodegration.

  • We investigated UV-vis absorbances to observe photoisimerization and effect of temperature using the mixture solution in chloroform and the LB monolayer mixed with DLPE and 8A5H containing azobenzene which shows reversible cis-trans isomerization irradiated by alternate lights. We could find that the absorption spectrum of the mixtures solution and LB monolayer was reversibly induced to photoisomerization irradiated by Uv of both and visible lights, in addition the absorbance by alternate temperatures.

  • The analysis of trace herbicides using the on-line SPE-HPLC system and a photochemical reaction was studied. 18 compounds of herbicides including eight triazines, six phenoxy acids and esters, and four other herbicides were examined. The on-line SPE-HPLC system developed for selection of eluting solvent improved chromatographic efficiency. The recoveries of herbicides were higher than 77%. With 100 mL tap water samples, the detection limits for all analytes were in the 0.1-2.3×10-10 M range. Detection was done by a UV or fluorescence spectrometer after photochemical reaction at the end of the column with 2W or 450W mercury lamp. Without a photochemical reaction, all compounds responded to 230 nm UV detector, but phenoxy acids and esters were weakly detected. However, with a photochemical reaction, these compounds were selectively detected at 320 nm wavelength of UV absorption and 400 nm emission of the fluorescence detectors. This method can be used for the analysis of environmental water containing herbicides at trace levels.
