  • A nanocomposite consisting of $Fe_3O_4$ and MWCNT was produced via sol-gel technique using $FeCl_3$ along with MWCNT by calcination at $300^{\circ}C$. The degradation effect of rhodamine B dye has been investigated under UV illumination in a darkroom. The degradation reaction was studied by monitoring the discoloration of dye as a function of irradiation time using UV-visible spectrophotometeric technique. The $Fe_3O_4$-MWCNT samples have continuous degradation ability under the UV illumination with the first order kinetics and the dye removal was better than in the pristine $Fe_3O_4$. The resultant composite catalyst was found to be efficient for the photo-Fenton reaction of the dye.

  • Rutile-TiO2 nanorod thin films were formed on Ti disks via alkali treatment in NaOH solutions followed by heat treatment at 700℃. Ag nanoparticles were loaded on nanorods using a photo-reduction method to improve the photocatalytic properties of the prepared specimen. The surface characterization and the photo-electrochemical properties of the Ag-loaded TiO2 nanorods were investigated using a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The TiO2 nanorods obtained after the heat treatment were 80 to 180 nm thick and 1 ㎛ long. The thickness of the nanorods increased with the NaOH concentration. The UV-Vis spectra exhibit a shift in the absorption edge of the Ag-loaded TiO2 to the visible light range and further narrowing of the bandgap. The decrease in the size of the capacitive loops in the EIS spectra showed that the Ag loading effectively improved the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 nanorods.

  • The stabilization effect of .alpha.-tocopherol incorporated into liposomal phospholipid membrane was investigated by fluorospectrophotometry and UV-visible spectretarded by the presence of .alpha.-tocopherol in the bilayer of liposomal phospholipid membrane relative to cholesterol-containing liposomes and pure phospholipid liposomes. .alpha.-tocopherol-containing liposomes prolonged the oxidation of liposomes-embedded heme as those of cholesterol-containing liposomes and pure phospholipid liposomes. Thus .alpha.-tocopherol-containing liposomes may be useful for the carrier systems of nutrients and drugs to phospholipid bilayer and stabilized liposomes.

  • Four kinds of copolymers with fluorene and biphenylamine units were synthesized by palladium-catalyzed polycondensation reaction. These polymers were characterized in terms of their UV/Visible and photoluminescence (PL) properties in solution and film state. These polymers were also studied as a hole transporting material in the polymer light emitting diode (PLED) devices.

  • The essential oil fraction of Chrysanthemum sibiricum Turcz. (Compositae) was analysed by means of TLC and GLC. Utilizing silicagel column chromatography, a blue-color compound was isolated, and purified by preparative TLC. The obtain compound had the same Rf-value on TLC and exactly same UV-visible and IR spectra with that of chamazulene isolated from Matricaria chamomilla L. The composition of the essential oil was also compared with those from flowers of Chrysanthemum indicum L. and Chrysanthemum morifolim Ramatuelia.

  • Metal oxide nanostructures have been applied to various fields such as energy, catalysts and electronics. We have freely designed one and two-dimensional (1 and 2-D) metal (transition metals and lanthanides) oxide nanostructures, characterized them using various techniques including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction crystallography, thermogravimetric analysis, FT-IR, UV-visible-NIR absorption, Raman, photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed thermal desorption (reaction) mass spectrometry. In addition, Ag- and Au-doped metal oxides will be discussed in this talk.

  • Molecular switching in azobenzene mixed monolayers on a water surface was investigated by means of Maxwell displacement current(MDC) measurement. It was found that the change in the vertical component of the dipolemoment of the mixed monolayer during visible light irradiation was almost the same as that flowing during UV light irradiation. Also MDC was generated but it depended on the molar ratio. As a result. It's phtoisomerization progressed by 8A5H in mixed films.

  • Two different carbazolylnitrostilbene chromophores with second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) activity were newly synthesized by the reaction of 9-(2-hydroxyethyl)-9H-carbazol-3-carbaldehyde with 4-nitrophenylacetonitrile or 4-nitrophenylacetic acid. The NLO monomers were obtained by reaction of these chromophores with methacryloyl chloride. The side-chain nonlinear optical polymers were synthesized by the copolymerization of NLO monomer with methylmethacrylate using a free radical initiator. The chemical structures of the polymers were identified by spectroscopic means and the polymer properties such as molecular weight, Tg, solubility, UV-visible absorption, and second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients were investigated.
