UV-curable aliphatic epoxy acrylates were prepared by the reaction of glycerol diglycidyl ether (GDE) with 2-carboxyethyl acrylate (2-CEA) or 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (2-HEA). The structures of the epoxy acrylates were characterized by FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR, and $^{13}C$-NMR and the yield was obtained by prep-LC. The UV- and the thermal-curing behaviors of the product were investigated using photo-DSC and DSC, respectively. The reactivity of 2-CEA was higher than 2-HEA and the yield of the product (GEA-C) which was prepared using 2-CEA was about 83%. The maximum UV-curing time ($T_{max}$) of the GEA-C contained non-reactive components and by-product was about 10 seconds. The GEA-C showed low color difference (${\Delta}E^*$), low viscosity, and good thermal stability - its value was 2.51, 192 cps, and $299^{\circ}C$ (at 5% weight loss), respectively. The activation energies ($E_a$) of thermal-curing reaction calculated from Kissinger and Ozawa-Flynn-Wall method were 91~92 kJ/mol.

Furan-containing epoxide monomers (8, 9) were designed and synthesized as carbon-neutral, environment-friendly adhesion material. Bicyclic skeleton were constructed using the Diels-Alder reaction of furan and methyl acrylate, both readily accessible starting material from a biomass via bio-refinery process. After reduction of ester functionality, resulting hydroxyl moieties were coupled to epichlorohydrin to provide the epoxy-functionalized furanic monomers (8, 9). The structure of new furanic monomers was confirmed by $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopy. As UV-curable monomers, basic properties such as UV curing time and the extent of UV curing were evaluated by photo DSC. Photo-curing shrinkages were measured by linear variable differential transformer transducer (LVDT) and the effect of molecular structure on shrinkage was considered. In addition, new synthetic compounds showed the shear strength over 3 MPa when they were photo-cured between polycarbonate plates, which indicates these compounds are feasible to use as photo-curable adhesive materials.
In this study, UV-curing type organic - inorganic hybrid hard coating solutions were prepared from alumina sols and acrylate monomers. The mixture of alumina sols, prepared from aluminum isopropoxide, and a silane coupling agent, methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane(MPTMS), was used as an inorganic component. Also, the mixture of acrylate monomers, pentaerythritol triacrylate(PETA), 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate(HDDA) and dipentaerythritol hexaacrylate (DPEHA), was used as an organic component. The organic-inorganic hybrid coating solutions were obtained by mixing the inorganic component and organic component, deposited on polycarbonate substrates by spin coating and densified by UV-curing. The effect of the amount of MPTMS in the inorganic component and the irradiation time during UV-curing was studied on the properties of coating films. As a result, when 0.20 mole of MPTMS was used, the pencil hardness of coated films showed an excellent pencil hardness of 3H and also exhibited a good abrasion resistance of 2% in haze.

Liquid crystals (LCs) which utilize the phase above blue phase temperature range are also known to format the optically nanostructured composites devices based on Kerr effect these days. We report electro-optical characteristics of the polymer-stabilized cholestric LCs by using UV curable monomers at the different temperatures such as blue phase temperature range, blue phase-isotropic transition temperature, and isotropic temperature range. The devices exhibit different electro-optic characteristics.

OCB mode has advantages such as fast response time and wide viewing angle. But it has inevitable shortcoming which initial splay state must be changed to bend state. To overcoming this problem, OCB cell filled LC with RM monomer was cured by UV when voltage applied. Through previously mentioned methods, even if electric field is none, bend state was made by stabilized LC director. In this paper, we investigated the electric characteristics of polymer stabilized OCB mode.
An etch-less simple method was developed to fabricate two-dimensional nanostructures on glass substrate directly by using UV curable polymer resin and UV nanoimprint lithography in order to improve output coupling efficiency of OLEDs. OLEDs integrated on nanoimprinted substrates enhanced electro-luminance intensity by up to 50% compared with the conventional device.
Ceramic processing to fabricate 3D complex ceramic structures is crucial for structural, energy, environmental, and biomedical applications. A unique process is ceramic stereolithography, which builds ceramic green objects from CAD files from many thin liquid layers of powder in monomer, which are solidified by polymerization with a UV laser, thereby "writing" the design for each slice. This approach directly writes layers in liquid ceramic suspension and allows one to fabricate ceramic parts and products having more accurate, complex geometries and smooth surfaces. In this paper, both UV curable materials and processes are presented. We focus on the basic material principles associated with free radical polymerization and rheological behavior, cure depth and broadening of cured lines, scattering at ceramic interface and their corresponding simulation. The immediate potentials for ceramic AM to change industry fabrication are also highlighted.

It is well known that the characteristics of liquid crystal polymer composite(LCPC) films are possessed of large-area and flexible display, polarizer free, high contrast, wide angle of visual filed and high responsiveness. In this study, we have investigated to the best optimal mixing rates chiral nematic liquid crystals and UV-curable resins having different properties acrylate moleculars. The purpose of this study has been the development of new functional application with liquid crystal polymer composite films. For example the films were applied a new thermal sensor. In results, best phase separation behaviors turned out liquid crystal/monomer/oilgomer mixture system.
Using various compositions of thermally conductive inorganic fillers with boron nitride (BN) and aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$), solventless UV-curable thermally conductive acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were prepared. The base of the PSAs consists of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, and isobornyl acrylate. The compositions of the thermally conductive inorganic fillers were 10, 15, 20, and 25 phr in case of BN, and 20:0, 15:5, 10:10, 5:15, and 0:20 phr in case of $BN/Al_2O_3$. The adhesion properties like peel strength, shear strength, and probe tack, and the thermal conductivity of the prepared PSAs were investigated with different thermally conductive inorganic filler contents. There were no significant changes in photo-polymerization behavior with increasing BN or $BN/Al_2O_3$ content. Meanwhile, the conversion rate and transmittance of the PSAs decreased and their thermal stabilities increased with increasing BN content. Their adhesion properties were also independent of the BN or $BN/Al_2O_3$ content. The dispersibility of BN in the acrylic PSAs was better than that of $Al_2O_3$ and it ranked the thermal conductivity in the following order: BN > $BN/Al_2O_3$ > $Al_2O_3$.
Surface properties and curing behavior of UV-initiated photopolymerization with and without wax have been investigated by pendulum hardness, pencil hardness, gloss, photo-differential scanning calorimetry (photo-DSC) and SEM. In addition, the influence of wax type (paraffin wax, PE wax) on the various properties of UV cured films was studied. The results showed that the wax type was the significant factor affecting gloss and surface hardness of UV cured films. Specially, the photo-DSC results showed that ${\Delta}H$ for the UV cured films containing paraffin wax was higher than the corresponding values for the formulation without wax and with PE wax. The observed results clearly demonstrate that the photopolymerization of UV curing with paraffin wax in an air atmosphere is less inhibited by the oxygen compared to UV curing without wax and with PE wax.
