The aim of this study was to find the proper UV-A blocking percentage that could protect the denaturation of ribonuclease A (RNase A), one of protein enzymes in eye, induced by UV-A. RNase A was irradiated at 365 nm for 1, 3, 6, 24, 48, 72, 96 hr and the extent of denaturation was monitored by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Furthermore, it was investigated whether blocking of UV-A by 20, 50, 80 and 99% eyeglass lens could protect the denaturation of RNase A or not. The denaturation of RNase A was induced by only 1 hr UV-A irradiation and the extent of denaturation became severe depending on UV-A irradiation time. The mild denaturation of RNase A induced by irradiation for 1 hr could be sufficiently protected by 20% UV-A blocking lens. When RNase A was irradiated for 3 hr, more that 50% blocking of UV-A needed to prevent the denaturation. Even though 99% UV-A blocking lens was used, the denaturation of RNase A induced by 6 hr irradiation could not be prevented perfectly. However, 99% UV-A blocking lens could dramatically decrease the severe denaturation of RNase A induced by irradiation for 96 hr.

Purpose: The current study was conducted to evaluate the compatibility of UV-A blocking contact lens on eye protection with regular contact lens. Methods: The protective activity of regular contact lens (UV-A blocking: 20%) and UV-A blocking contact lens (UV-A blocking: 85%) on the denaturation of RNase A, catalase, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) induced UV-A irradiation were compared by acrylamide gel electrophoresis. The enzyme solutions were irradiated with UV-A for 1, 3, 6, 24 and 96 hours at the wavelength of 365 nm. Covering area with contact lenses were varied as 50%, 70% and 100% according to the calculation of blocking areas of anterior eye that could be covered with RGP lens, soft contact lens, and eye glasses, respectively. Results: Denaturations of RNase, catalase and SOD were exaggerated when they were exposed to UV-A for a longer period. The denaturation was effectively prevented by UV-A blocking contact lens compared to regular contact lens. The capability of UV-A blocking contact lens was considerably reduced when the covering area with contact lens decreased and exposure time to UV-A extended. Conclusion: Therefore, it would be suggested that wearing contact lens for a long time under sunlight is carefully considered since the activity of UV-A blocking contact lens against UV-A irradiation may not be enough to protect enzymes presented in eyes when exposure time to UV-A increased.
A study was done to compare the properties of artificially deteriorated silk with ultraviolets for reinforcing of loss area of paintings on silk. Deteriorated surface of raw silk irradiated by long-wavelength ultraviolet(UV-A) than short-wavelength ultraviolet(UV-C) was similar to naturally aged raw silk. UV-A irradiation raw silk was slowly decreased in tensile tenacity and elongation and lowered in yellowness index than that of UV-C. Water content of UV-A irradiation raw silk than that of UV-C was higher. UV-A irradiation raw silk had no problem in dyeing and inpainting for conservation because of low yellowness index. UV-C irradiation raw silk was brittle, but UV-A irradiation raw silk was seemed to tough and similar to naturally aged raw silk. Korean painting conservator estimated that UV-A irradiation raw silk was more proper for reinforcing of loss area of paintings on silk than that of UV-C.
The feasibility study for the application of the removal and mineralization of Rhodamine B (RhB) was performed in a batch electrochemical reactor. The electro/UV process was consisted of DSA (dimensionally stable anode) electrode and UV-C or ozone lamp. The experimental results showed that RhB removal by the ozone lamp was higher than that of the UV-C lamp. Optimum current of the electro/UV process was 1 A. The electrochemical, UV and electro/UV process could completely degrade RhB, while a prolonged treatment was necessary to reach a high level RhB mineralization. It was observed that RhB removal in electro/UV process is similar to the sum of the UV and electrolytic decolorization. However, it was found that the COD of RhB could be degraded more efficiently by the electro/UV process (90.2 %) than the sum of the two individual oxidation processes [UV (19.7%) and electrolytic process (50.8%)]. A synergetic effect was demonstrated between the UV and electrolysis.
The monthly-mean irradiance of ultra violet (UV)-B and UV-A observed from 2005 to 2014 and 2012 to 2014, respectively, at noon in Gosan, Jeju, South Korea are analyzed. We compare cloudiness, total ozone, visibility, and relative humidity with an emphasis on the four months from May to August (MJJA), which shows the largest UV radiation. While the incoming UV-B radiation at the top of the atmosphere in Gosan is the largest in June due to the small solar zenith angle, the observed surface UV-B shows an unexpected smaller value in June than those in May, July or August. In June, the meteorological conditions affecting Gosan are completely dominated by cloudiness and thus, frequent overcast seems to determine the minimum UV-B. Another important UV-determining factor is the total ozone, which exhibits a monotonic decrease during MJJA without agreeing to the characteristic feature of UV. The ratio of UV-B to UV-A is not generally influenced by cloudiness. Thus, the ratio is a useful indicator of atmospheric turbidity showing larger values for increasing visibility, except in June. A simple model has been used to estimate surface UV by using the observed ozone and visibility in the cloudless condition. The result shows that UV has the lowest value in June with small variation during MJJA. Model estimation also shows that the different characteristic features observed in July between surface UV-B and UV-A is the result of less absorption of UV-B by ozone than that of UV-A by a smaller amount of total ozone.

Inspections and diagnoses of corona discharge are important in order to prevent electrical faults of external insulation in power systems. This paper studies a measurement of ultra-violet rays(UV) strength of corona discharges on insulators using a UV sensor with an optic lens. The data has been compared with the images of a UV camera. The UV sensor estimated that DC voltage needed to be set at 700V for accurate data analysis of the properties of UV detected during corona discharge. UV was generated at 60kV when the corona discharge occurred. UV strength and images of UV increased at a high voltage. The image area of the UV using a UV camera and the detection of UV using a UV sensor have shown, that the polymer insulator mounted on a live part must be checked when the applied voltage on the good polymer insulator is greater than 37.5% of its breakdown voltage.

This study was investigated to find the proper UV-A blocking percentage that could protect the denaturation of catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD), antioxidative enzymes in eye, induced by UV-A. Catalase or SOD were irradiated at 365 nm for 1, 3, 6, 24, 96 hr and the extent of denaturation was evalutated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Furthermore, it was investigated whether blocking of UV-A by 20, 50, 80 and 99% eyeglass lens could protect the denaturation of catalase and SOD or not. Catalase became to denature when catalase were irradiated by UV-A for more than 3 hours. However, the denaturation of SOD was induced by more than 6 hours irradiation. The denaturation of catalase induced by irradiation for 3 hr could be perfectly protected by 99% UV-A blocking lens. But, when the irradiation time became longer than 3 hr or the blocking percentage of lens were lower than 99%, the denaturation of catalase was not perfectly protected but partially protected. Although 50% UV-A blocking lens had partial protecting effects, lenses having 80 or 99% UV-A blocking effect could perfectly prevent the denaturation of SOD induced by 96 hr irradiation.
The effect of salicylic acid(SA) on antioxidant system and protective mechanisms against UV-B induced oxidative stress was investigated in cucumber(Cucumis sativus L.) leaves. UV-B radiation and SA were applied separately or in combination to first leaves of cucumber seedlings, and dry matter accumulation, lipid peroxidation and activities of antioxidant enzymes were measured in both dose and time-dependant manner. UV-B exposure showed reduced levels of fresh weight and dry matter production, whereas SA treatment significantly increased them. SA noticeably recovered the UV-B induced inhibition of biomass production. UV-B stress also affected lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme defense system. Malondialdehyde(MDA), a product of lipid peroxidation, was greatly increased under UV-B stress, showing a significant enhancement of a secondary metabolites, which may have antioxidative properties in cucumber leaves exposed to UV-B radiation. Combined application of UV-B and SA caused a moderate increase in lipid peroxidation. These results suggest that SA may mediate protection against oxidative stress. UV-B exposure significantly increased SOD, APX, and GR activity compared with untreated control plants. Those plants treated with 1.0 mM SA showed a similar pattern of changes in activities of antioxidant enzymes. SA-mediated induction of antioxidant enzyme activity may involve a protective accumulation of $H_2O_2$ against UV-B stress. Moreover, their activities were stimulated with a greater increase by UV-B+SA treatment. The UV-B+SA plants always presented higher values than UV-B and SA plants, considering the adverse effects of UV-B on the antioxidant cell system. ABA and JA, second messengers in signaling in response to stresses, showed similar mode of action in UV-B stress, supporting that they may be important in acquired stress tolerance. Based on these results, it can be suggested that SA may participates in the induction of protective mechanisms involved in tolerance to UV-B induced oxidative stress.
Nowadays, interests of ultraviolet(UV) protection increased, since the UV dosage on the earth surface has increased over years. Overdose of UV can cause various skin, eye, and even DNA damages. Therefore, it is need to develop a proper mean to protect human skin and eye from UV radiation. In this study, the UV protective effect of green tea extract dyed fabrics with various fiber types were examined. Green tea has an active moiety called 'catechin' having benzene rings in its structure, which would exert a proper UV protective property. Green tea dyed fabrics showed the increase in UV protection, and silk showed the highest increase in UV protection (from 52.2% to 84.5% in UV-A, from 66.1% to 90% in UV-B). The order of UV-A protection increase is silk, wool, nylon and acrylic, PET, and cotton. The order of UV-B protection increase is silk nylon, wool, acrylic, cotton, and PET. In case of silk and nylon, the UV protection property gradually increased as the concentration of green tea extract increased. As a result, it was proven that green tea extract dyeing can improve UV protection property of dyed fabrics in environment-friendly and biocompatible manners.
To determine whether the enhanced UV-B causes oxidative stress, and to test the relationship between plant growth response and biochemical defense response to UV-B, two soybean plants, Keunolkong, a highly UV-B susceptible cultivar, and Danyeubkong, a less UV-B susceptible cultivar, were subjected to the enhanced UV-B [daily dose : 0.06 (control) and 11.32 (enhanced UV-B) kJ $m^{-2}$ ; $UV-B_{BE}$] for 3 weeks. Contents of malondialdehyde and total carotenold were increased in Keunolkong compared with Danyeubkong by UV-B. In control plants, ascorbate level of Danyeubkong was 3 times higher than that of Keunolkong. The ratio of dehydroascorbate/ascorbate was highly increased in Keunolkong by UV-B . The activities of antioxidative enzyme such as superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, monodehydroascorbate reductase and glutathione reductase were increased in both cultivars by UV-B. This results indicate that enhanced UV-B caused oxidative stress in both two cultivars, especially in Keunolkong. Susceptibility of two soybean cultivars to UV-B is closely related to the levels of antioxidants such as carotenoid and ascorbate.
