The effect of radioprotective ginseng protein fraction on DNA repair capacity was determined by measuring the amount of $^{3}H-thymidine$ incorporated into DNA in the process of repair synthesis for UV damaged DNA. CHO-Kl cells were prepared whose semiconservative replication was inhibited by trimethylpsoralen plus near-UV(PUVA) treatment. When the cells were exposed to UV light alone, the DNA repair capacity was increased at first and then decreased as UV dose increased. However, when the ginseng fraction was treated to the cells, the DNA repair capacity was kept increasing regardless of UV dose increment. When the concentration of protein contained in the added fraction was increased gradually, the repair capacity was also increased almost linearly showing dose-response relationship of the effect. These results suggest that the enhancement of DNA repair capacity of the cell can be one of the mechanisms of radioprotection by the ginseng fraction.
Effect of disperse dyeing on flame retardant finishing of PET fabrics via UV curing using three UV curable phosphorous-containing methacrylates and ammonium polyphosphate(APP) was investigated. The dye fixation and flame retardancy of PET fabrics did not change significantly with excellent durability to five laundering cycles irrespective of the dyeing and finishing sequence. However, the flame retardancy of Pekoflam-treated fabrics was lower than that of the UV treated and decreased substantially when heat treatment was carried out before the dyeing. The dyeability of the flame-retardant PET fabrics was not affected in the case of UV curing of the methacrylates alone. However, UV finishing after the dyeing caused significant decrease in K/S and ${\Delta}E$ due to changed refraction and inherent color of surface coating of the UV curable monomers and APP. Whereas the heat treatment with Pekoflam decreased both color fastness to laundering and sublimation, surprisingly the UV finish of PET fabrics before and after the dyeing increased the color fastness probably resulting from the presence of photopolymerized surface layer on the fabrics.

Rainwater harvesting is a process by which rainwater collected from rooftop or other catchment is purified so that the water can be directly or indirectly used by human beings for beneficial uses. As rainwater is increasingly considered for high quality purposes, membranes have gained an important place in rainwater treatment. It has advantages such as the production of high quality water, small footprint, and affordable energy consumption. Nevertheless, membrane fouling is regarded as a serious problem similar to the cases of water treatment and wastewater reclamation. In this study, we applied microfiltration (MF) membranes for rainwater treatment. In addition, a low pressure ultraviolet (UV) process was also use as a pretreatment to control notonly. To quantify the effect of UV on organic matters, both total organic carbon (TOC) and UV absorbance (UVA) were measured. Moreover, the effect of UV pretreatment on membrane fouling was investigated. Experimental results indicated that the pretreatment of membranes using LPUV was effective to control fouling of MF membranes only when the rainwater was contaminated by algae. This was attributed the reduction and modification of organics after UV treatments. It is likely that the UV/MF process is a promising option for water treatment in decentralized water treatment such as micro water grid systems.
Continuous and intense UV irradiation on PTT film using two types of UV bulbs at different irradiation power level was carried out to modify surface characteristics of the film including zeta potential, wettability, surface energy, and dyeability. ESCA analysis of the irradiated film showed higher O/C ratio than the untreated film indicating photooxidation of outer surface layer. ATR analysis showed that the ester bonds were broken and some new groups were produced such as carboxylic acid, phenolic hydroxy, and other esters, implying that ester bonds of PTT was responsible for the observed photooxidation effect. The surface of the treated PTT film became more hydrophilic and wettable to water, coupled with increased surface energy. Polar component of the surface energy increased and nonpolar component decreased with increasing irradiation energy. The treatment also decreased zeta potential of the modified surface and nanoscale roughness increased with increasing irradiation. The dyeability of the treated films to catonic dyes was significantly improved by electrostatic and polar interaction between dye molecules and the anionic film surface. The UV irradiation seems to be a viable polymer surface modification technology, which has advantages such as no vacuum requirement and continuous process unlike plasma treatment.
For shelf-life improvement of the domestic peach, a treatment with low dose UV-C (0~3.0 $kJ/m^2$) irradiation was performed and the spoilage rate and changes of physico-chemical and sensory properties of the peach were investigated. Control showed spoilage at day 4, and then 50% of control showed spoilage at day 8. However, samples treated with low dose UV-C showed lower percentage of spoilage than those of control at day 8. Weight changes of control and the samples with UV-C treatment showed no difference during the storage period. There was no difference in pH of samples among the treatments but they were increased by storage time. Hardness of samples was not different among treatments at initial stage of storage after UV-C treatment. However, the hardness of control sample was decreased faster than those of the samples with low dose UV-C treatment after 6 days of storage. No significant changes in lightness, redness and yellowness of the samples by UV-C treatment were observed. The sensory parameters including taste, flavor, and color at initial and during storage period were not different among treatments except for texture and overall acceptance. The scores for texture and overall acceptance of control were decreased faster than those of UV-C treatments during storage. In general, samples treated with low dose UV-C showed higher sensory quality than control.
Biolgical activated carbon (BAC) processes are known to effectively remove organic pollutants in raw water, and biomass and attached bacterial species play an important role in removing process. In the present study, changes of bacterial biomass in granular activated carbon (GAC) process according to the depth and operating period were investigated. In addition, changes of bacterial biomass were also confirmed after UV exposure prior to the GAC process. Results from this this study showed that the bacterial biomass was decreased dependently according to the depth of GAC process. In case of UV pre-treatment, the bacterial biomass was declined significantly over the period of operation. However, changes in bacterial community were not shown during operation period without UV pre-treatment process. In conclusion, findings from this study may provide the useful information about the management of BAC process.
To investigate the quality retention method of salted and semi-dried mackerel fillets, pH, volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), trimethylamine (TMA) and total bacterial counts in the fillets that were UV treated for 1, 3, and 4 hr were periodically measured during 48 days of refrigerated storage. The moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, and ash contents were 45.46 %, 18.87 %, 33.75 %, and 2.99 %, respectively. The freshness as determined by pH measurement could be maintained up to 25 days for the control and 31 days for the UV-treated fillets. VBN contents were continually increased over the storage time. The control reached the initial putrid level after 21 days while the UV-treated fillets after $25{\sim}31$ days. A similar tendency was shown for the changes of trimethylamine TMA contents, although the period differed slightly and the increase of the UV treatment time could decrease the TMA contents. The changes on the total bacterial counts of the fillets were maintained under 105 CFU/g during 48days. Especially, due to the effective decrease of the microorganism count by UV treatment at the beginning of the storage, UV -treated fillets showed lower bacterial counts than control over the whole period. E. coli. and Listeria were not detected in any fillets. Combining the above data and the sensory changes, the storage period of the fillets could be prolonged from 15 days at present to 30 days by UV treatments.
This study carried out to investigate activities of the superoxide dismutase(SOD), peroxidase(POD) and diterpene cyclase of rice plant treated by environmental stress conditions. The rice leaves of Ilpum was shown to have the most highest specific activity of POD. POD activity in the susceptible cv. Ilpum and Hwasung during the disease progress show a increase, while for a decreasing activity in the resistant cv. Dasan. SOD activity of rice plants treated by chitosan were increased as the treatment concentration increased. At the chitosan application, the SOD activity in the susceptible cv. Hwansung at the rice leaves 14days after treatment was higher in treatment than chitosan-untreated control. The activity of POD in the susceptible cv. Ilpum decreased as long as UV-B irradiation, while that in the resistant cv. Dasan increased. Futhermore, activity of that in Dasan were similar to as time on UV irradiation, Hwasung showed two times higher than untreated control at 40 minutes after UV-B exposure. The activity of diterpene cyclase in rice plants inoculated with Pyricularia oryzae has much higher tendency than UV-B irradiation. The activity of diterpene cyclase in the rice leaves gradually increased until 5 days after inoculation with Pyricularia oryzae.
With the current consumer trend toward health and wellbeing, the demand for consumption of fresh cut vegetables has been increasing. As a popular vegetable with functional components, sedum (Sedum sarmentosum) is widely used in Korea as a side dish that needs no cooking. In this study, to provide a hurdle technology for postharvest sedum, the effects of combined treatment of 1% acetic acid for washing and $10kJ/m^2$ UV-C irradiation on the microbial growth and quality of sedum were examined. After the treatment, the sedum samples were stored at $10^{\circ}C$ for six days, and the results of their microbial analysis as well as their color, vitamin C content, and antioxidant activity were analyzed. The combined treatment with acetic acid and UV-C irradiation reduced the initial populations of the total aerobic bacteria and the yeast and molds in the sedum by 3.28 and 4.22 log CFU/g, respectively, compared to those in the control. The Hunter L, a, and b values of the sedum did not significantly differ across the treatments. In addition, the vitamin C content and the antioxidant activity decreased significantly during the storage, regardless of the treatment. These results suggest that the combined treatment with 1% acetic acid and $10kJ/m^2$ UV-C irradiation can be useful as a hurdle technology for retaining the microbiological safety and quality of sedum during its storage.
This study investigated the efficacy of ultraviolet-C (UV-C) irradiation in enhancing the quality of raw bovine milk by targeting microbial populations and lipid peroxidation, both of which are key factors in milk spoilage. We categorized the raw milk samples into three groups based on initial bacterial load: low (<3 Log 10 CFU/mL), medium (3-4 Log 10 CFU/mL), and high (>4 Log 10 CFU/mL). Using a 144 W thin-film UV-C reactor, we treated the milk with a flow rate of 3 L/min. We measured the bacterial count including standard plate count, coliform count, coagulase-negative staphylococci count, and lactic acid bacteria count and lipid peroxidation (via thiobarbituric acid reactive substances assay) pre- and post-treatment. Our results show that UV-C treatment significantly reduced bacterial counts, with the most notable reductions observed in high and medium initial load samples (>4 and 3-4 Log 10 CFU/mL, respectively). The treatment was particularly effective against coliforms, showing higher reduction efficiency compared to coagulase-negative staphylococci and lactic acid bacteria. Notably, lipid peroxidation in UV-C treated milk was significantly lower than in pasteurized or untreated milk, even after 72 hours. These findings demonstrate the potential of UV-C irradiation as a pre-treatment method for raw milk, offering substantial reduction in microbial content and prevention of lipid peroxidation, thereby enhancing milk quality.
