  • Cyanidation method has been used to extract high-purity gold and silver in mining industry. Such mining activities have used a large amount of cyanide, and the mine wastewater contained a high level of cyanide has brought about pollution of surrounding aqueous environments. This research was initiated to study $TiO_2$-catalytic UV-LED photo-oxidation to remove cyanide from the mine wastewater. UV lamp has been generally used as a light source in conventional photo-oxidation so far, but it shows numerous drawbacks. For this reason, this study focused on the evaluation of applicability of UV-LED as an alternative light source in cyanide photo-oxidation process. Three types of $TiO_2$ photo-catalyst were compared in terms of performance of photo-oxidation of cyanide, and the results show that Degussa P25 was the most efficient. In addition, four types of UV-LED were tested to compare their efficiencies of cyanide photo-oxidation, and their efficacy was increased in the order of 365 nm lamp-type > 365 nm can-type > 280 nm can-type > 420 nm lamp-type. Not only did this study demonstrate that UV-LED can be used in the photo-oxidation of cyanide as an alternative light source of UV lamp, but also confirmed that the performance of photo-oxidation was significantly influenced by the type of $TiO_2$ catalysts.

  • To establish the efficient treatment technology of chemical cleaning wastewater from power plant, several AOPs($UV/H_2O_2,\;UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$, Photo-Fenton oxidation) were investigated. Treatment efficiencies and the electrical energy requirements based on the EE/O parameter(the electrical energy, required per order of pollutant removal in $1m^3$ wastewater) were evaluated. TOC removal efficiencies of $UV/H_2O_2,\;UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$, Photo-Fenton oxidation at the optimum conditions were 95.5%, 92.3%, 91.5%, respectively. The electrical energy requirements of $UV/H_2O_2,\;UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$, Photo-Fenton oxidation were $11.26kWh/m^3,\;3.85kWh/m^3,\;0.799kWh/m^3$, respectively. From these results, it could be concluded that all of the three oxidation processes were effective for the degradation of citric acid. Considering the treatment efficiency and economical aspect, photo-Fenton oxidation was the most efficient treatment process among the three processes tested.

  • The degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in water was investigated in laboratory-scale experiments, using five advanced oxidation Processes (AOPs) $UV/H_2O_2$, lenten, photo-lenten, $UV/TiO_2,\;UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$. The photodegradation experiments were carried out in a fluidized bed photoreactor equipped with an immersed 32 W UV-C lamp as light source. initial decolorization rate and COD removal efficiency were evaluated and compared. The results obtained showed that the initial decolorization rate constant was quite different for each oxidation process. The relative order of decolorization was: photo-fenton > $UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$ > fenton > $UV/H_2O_2$ > $UV/TiO_2$ > UV > $H_2O_2$. The relative order of COD removal was different from decolorization: photo-fenten ${\fallingdotseq}$ $UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2\;>\;UV/TiO_2\;>\;fenton\;>\;UV/H_2O_2$. The Photo-lenten and $UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$ processes seem to be appropriate for decolorization and COD removal of dye wastewater.

  • In this study, UV-catalyzed $H_2O_2$ oxidation and $H_2O_2$ oxidation to remove contaminants from photo processing chemicals were investigated at various conditions. Photo processing chemicals contains high concentrations of organic compounds and has very low biodegradability. Hydrogen peroxide is subjected to gradual decomposition as metastable substance. In the process, short-lived and highly reactive hydroxyl radicals are formed. The decomposition can be significantly accelerated by use of appropriate catalyst, such as ultraviolet radiation. The experiments were conducted in a UV-free reflecting reactor in batch and a high-pressure mercury lamp was used as UV source. Mixing, cooling and ventilation of the reactor were operated during experiments. In $UV/H_2O_2$ oxidation and $H_2O_2$ oxidation, the removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$, TOC and chromaticity increased with the increase of $H_2O_2$ dosage and were higher in the controlled pH condition of 3 than in original pH condition of 8. In $UV/H_2O_2$ oxidation under the optimum condition of pH 8 and 1.3 stoichiometric $H_2O_2$ dosage, the removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$, TOC and chromaticity were 47.5%, 75.0% and 91.5% respectively and $BOD/COD_{Cr}$ ratio was significantly increased from 0.04 to 0.21.

  • The photochemical decolorization of Rhodamine B (RhB) in water has been carried out by photo-Fenton process. The effect of applied $H_2O_2$, $Fe^{2+}$ dose, solution pH and UV dose have been studied. The influence of constituent processes of photo-Fenton such as UV, $H_2O_2$ and Fenton has been investigated. Comparison of RhB removal was made between the photo-Fenton and $UV/H_2O_2$ process. The results obtained showed that the optimum dosage of $Fe^{2+}$ and $H_2O_2$ were 0.0031 mmol and 0.625 mol, respectively. pH 3 is found to be the optimum pH of for photo-Fenton process. pH and UV dose strongly influenced the decolorization of RhB in photo-Fenton process. The photo-Fenton and $UV/H_2O_2$ processes showed similar decolorization and seem to be appropriate for the decolorization of dye wastewater.

  • The pilot system for radioactive liquid laundry waste was developed with treatment capacity, 1ton/hr and set up in the Yong Kwang unit #4. The system is composed of tank module, RO systems and a UV/$H_2O$$_2$photo-oxidation unit. The RO system consists of the BW unit (low-pressure RO for brackish water desalination) and the SW unit (high-pressure RO for seawater desalination). The BW unit possesses 4 RO membranes and it can reduce the feed water volume down to 1/10. This concentrated feed water can be reduced again up to 1/10 in its volume in the SW unit composed of 4 RO membranes. The UV/$H_2O$$_2$ photo-oxidation process unit was used for the detergent degradation. The operation of the pilot system was carried out and verified in its capability through the continuous operation and concentration operation using the actual liquid waste from the power plant. The design criteria and data for industrialization were yielded. The efficiency of the UV/$H_2O$$_2$ photo-oxidation process and the optimum operational procedure were evaluated. The decontamination factors for radioactive cobalt and cesium were measured. This on-site test showed the experimental result in the DF$\geq$300 and volume reduction factor$\geq$100.

  • Fenton’s oxidation process is one of the most commonly applied processes to the wastewater which cannot be treated by conventional biological treatment processes. However, it is necessary to minimize the cost of Fenton’s oxidation treatment by modifying the treatment processes or other means of chemical treatment. So, as a method for the chemical oxidation of biorefractory or nonbiodegradable organic pollutants, the Photo-Fenton-Reaction which utilizes iron(11)salt. $H_2O$$_2$ and UV-light simultaneously has been proprosed. Therfore, the purpose of this study is to test a removal efficiency of dye-wastewater and treatment cost with Fenton’s and Photo-Fenton’s oxidation process. The Fe(11)/$H_2O$$_2$ reagent is referred to as the fenton’s reagent. which produces hydroxy radicals by the interaction of Fe(11) with $H_2O$$_2$. In this exoeriment, the main results are as followed; 1. The Fenton oxidation was most efficient in the pH range of 3-5. The optimal condition for initial reaction pH was 3.5 for the high CO $D_{Cr}$ & TOC-removal efficiency. 2. The removal efficiency of TOC and CO $D_{Cr}$ increased up to the molar ration between ferrate and hydrogen peroxide 0.2:1, but above that ratio removal efficiency hardly increased. 3. The highest removal efficiency of TOC and CO $D_{Cr}$ were showed when the mole ration of ferrate to hydrogen peroxide was 0.2:3.4. 4. Without pretreatment process, photo-fenton oxidation which was not absorbed UV light was not different to fenton oxidation. 5. And Fenton oxidtion with pretreatment process was similar to Fenton oxidation in the absence of coagulation, the proper dosage of F $e^{2+}$: $H_2O$$_2$ was 0.2:1 for the optimal removal efficiency of TOC or CO $D_{Cr}$ .6. Also, TOC & CO $D_{Cr}$ removal efficiency in the photo-fenton oxidation with pretreatment was increased when UV light intensity enhanced.7. Optimum light intensity in the range from 0 to 1200 W/$m^2$ showed that UV-intensity with 1200W/$m^2$ was the optimum condition, when F $e_{2+}$:$H_2O$$_2$ ratio for the highest decomposition was 0.2:2.5.EX>$_2$ ratio for the highest decomposition was 0.2:2.5.

  • Photo-sensitized oxidation of benzene in aqueous solution was conducted with persulfate, nitrate, nitrite, sulfate and chloride as sensitizers. In the photo-sensitized oxidation of benzene persulfate, nitrate and nitrite could act as sensitizers, while no detectable effects could be observed with sulfate and chloride. With increasing nitrite concentration the photo-sensitized oxidation of benzene ran through a maximum value and decreased thereafter with increasing nitrite concentration. A build-up of nitrite ions seemed to scavenge hydroxyl radicals. When nitrite was present with other ions, nitrite inhibited the photo-sensitized oxidation of benzene. Phenol and biphenyl were identified as intermediate.

  • The use of photo-catalytic processes in pollution abatement and resource has a significant economic importance. Therefore, the applications of photochemical oxidation of secondary effluent driven by UV, TiO2, TiO2/UV, H2O2/UV and TiO2/H2O2/UV, have been investigated in order to treat the secondary effluent from municipal sewage. Various experimental parameters such as BOD, CODcr, Nurbidity, total P, and SPC were examined in each photo-catalytic reaction system. The results showed that the application of single oxidant such as UV, TiO2 only has a minor effect on parameters reduction (CODcr, BOD, etc) to treat the secondary effluent, whereas the combinations of oxidants increase the removal efficiency. The best removal efficiency in every parameters was achieved by the combination of TiO2, H2O2 and UV. It was also found that the optimum amount of TiO2 for the treatment was 1g/ι to achieve water reuse standard. From the results, the photocatalytic reaction system can be an alternative as a post-treatment to treat the secondary effluent from municipal sewage.

  • The degradation of 2-chlorophenol(2-CP) by various AOPs(Advanced Oxidation Processes) including the photo-Fenton process has been examined. In sole $Fe^{2+}$, UV or $H_2O_2$ process without combination, low removal efficiencies have been achieved. But the photo-Fenton process showed higher removal efficiency for degradation of 2-chlorophenol than those of other AOPs including the Fenton process and the UV processes. In the photo-Fenton process, the optimal experimental conditions of 2-chlorophenol degradation were obtained at pH 3 and the $Fe^{2+}/H_2O_2$molar ratio of 1. Also the 2-chlorophenol removal efficiency increased with decreasing of the initial 2-chlorophenol concentration. 3-chlorocatechol and chlorohydroquinone were identified as photo-Fenton reaction intermediates, and a degradation pathway of 2-chlorophenol in the aqueous phase during the photo-Fenton reaction was proposed.
