The UV laser trimming can be useful to have an accurate performance specification of the passive waveguide devices. In order to measure the change of the refractive index of polymer overclad layer under the irradiation of uv light in a high precision Bragg grating is fabricated on the silica core of planar waveguide and the corresponding transmittance spectrum was analyzed. An effective refractive index change of $4.7x10^{-5}$ was obtained for a straight waveguide when its $60{\mu}m$-thick overclad was irradiated by UV laser pulses of its total fluence 24 $J/cm^2$.

Optical characteristics including the radiant flux and viewing angle of UV LEDs were investigated according to both silicone encapsulants with different refractive indexes and lens shapes. Lead frame was fabricated using the enhanced heat dissipation characteristics with a heat slug structure and the reflector based on EMC(Epoxy Mold Compound) material. Four types of lens shapes were designed and their optical characteristics depending on the refractive index of silicone encapsulants were evaluated. The maximum radiant flux can be achieved when the height of lens are 1.32mm and 1.08mm for silicone encapsulants with low and high refractive indexes, respectively. Depending on the encapsulating method, the viewing angle changes from $148.9^{\circ}$ to $130.2^{\circ}$ for low refractive index and from $145.3^{\circ}$ to $136.8^{\circ}$ for high refractive index. As a result, it is found that the optical characteristics of UV LEDs can be controled through both encapsulating method and the refractive index of encapsulants.

Disinfection of microorganisms using UV light is widely used in the field of water supply and wastewater treatment plant, In spite of high germicidal effect and relatively clean by-product, UV disinfection has fundamental defeat that is accumulation of fouling materials at the interface of water and lamp sleeve. Non-contact type of UV photoreactor which can avoid this fouling generation was developed and the experimental performance evaluation of the system was carried out in this study. Log inactivation rate of E. coli was selected as a disinfection index. The concentration of E. coli of second clarifier effluent was $8.2{\times}10^1-8.2{\times}10^3$ colony per mL and was well inactivated by the non-contact type of UV photoreactor. Under the UV intensity condition of $2.1-2.5mW/cm^2$, E. coli removal rate was observed in the range of 54 - 95% when the HRT was increased from 10 to 52 seconds. Experimental results showed that log inactivation of E. coli was proportional to UV dosage and $200mJ/cm^2$ of UV dose is expected for the 2.0 log inactivation of E. coli from the second clarifier effluent. Between the two parameters of UV intensity and contact time which are consist of UV dose, UV intensity was 4 times more effective than contact time.

The unexpected rising flux of early-type galaxies at decreasing ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths is a long-standing mystery. One important observational constraint is the correlation between UV-optical colours and Mg2 line strengths found by Burstein et al. (1988). The simplest interpretation of this phenomenon is that the UV strength is related to the Mg line-strength. Under this assumption, we expect galaxies with larger Mg gradients to have larger UV colour gradients. By combining UV imaging from GALEX, optical imaging from MDM and SAURON integral-field spectroscopy, we investigate the spatially-resolved relationships between UV colours and stellar population properties of 34 early-type galaxies from the SAURON survey sample. We find that galaxies with old stellar populations show tight correlations between the FUV colours (FUV-V and FUV-NUV) and the Mg b index, $H{\beta}$ index and metallicity [Z/H]. We have also derived logarithmic internal radial colour, measured line strength and derived stellar population gradients for each galaxy and again found a strong dependence of the FUV-V and FUV-NUV colour gradients on both the Mg b line-strength and the metallicity gradients. In particular, global gradients of Mg b and [Z/H] with respect to the UV colour across galaxies are consistent with their local gradients within galaxies, suggesting that the global correlations also hold locally. From a simple model based on multi-band colour fits of UV upturn and UV-weak galaxies, we have identified a plausible range of parameters that reproduces the observed radial colour profiles. In these models, the centers of elliptical galaxies, where the UV flux is strong, are enhanced in metals by roughly 60% compared to UV-weak regions.

We have examined seasonal and annual means of clear-sky solar noon and daily erythemal ultraviolet-B irradiances measured in Anmyeon. The intensity of the EUV-B irradiance is mainly dependent on solar zenith angle (SZA) and total ozone amounts on clear day conditions. The daily maximum occurs near solar noon time and the highest monthly accumulated EUV-B is seen in July in Anmyeon. The maximum daily variation occurs in June and July due to precipitation and clouds. The 7-year trend of EUV-B irradiance shows that it is slightly increasing. Additionally, we could confirm that aerosol effects such as Asian Dust decreases the EUV-B irradiance reaching the ground surface by 35% to 60%. For more than 45% of the summer days, EUV-B irradiacne was high enough that the UV index registered higher than category Extremely High. This information will be very important for evaluation of the UV index for prevention of both skin cancer and ecosystem damages as well as to understand UV climatology over the Korean Peninsula.

We analyzed the monthly and seasonal mean of the daily Erythemal Ultraviolet-B (EUV-B, $280{\sim}320nm$) irradiance operating in Pohang, Anmyeon, Gosan, Mokpo and Kangnung with UV-Biometer (Solar Light Co., Model No. 501) at clear-sky noon during the period from 1999 to 2004. Also, we investigated the seasonal and regional characteristics for the UV index over the Korean Peninsula. The daily maximum occurred near solar southing time and the highest monthly accumulated EUV-B irradiance appeared in July and August at each regional observatory. The monthly mean value of the clear-sky EUV-B irradiance in Pohang, Anmyeon, Gosan, Mokpo and Kangnung showed 196.6, 161.8, 221.9, $171.5mWm^{-2}\;and\;179.7mWm^{-2}$ near noon in July respectively. The annual mean value of the daily accumulated EUV-B irradiance in Pohang, Anmyeon, Gosan, Mokpo and Kangnung were 1.8, 2.1, 2.2, $1.8kJm^{-2}\;and\;1.5kJm^{-2}$ respectively. The UV Index (UVI) showed above UVI 7(High) more than 90 days during one year over the Korean Peninsula.
The experiment was conducted to determine the effects of enhanced UV-B on growth and differential responses among cultivars in soybean. The soybean cultivars subjected to enhanced UV-B irradiation at daily dose of 11.32 kJ $m^{-2}(UV-B_{BE})$ revealed that the growth was significantly depressed. Plant height, leaf number, leaf area and dry weight were inhibited by UV-B irradiation showing differential responses among cultivars used. Danyeubkong seems to be less sensitive to the enhanced W-B irradiation, while Keunolkong more sensitive. Reduction of chlorophyll content was also found significantly greater to Keunolkong. Specific leaf weight an index of leaf thickness, and flavonoid content known as UV-absorbing compounds were significantly Increased in Danyeubkong by UV-B, but those In the other cultivars were not significantly affected. The results indicated that there are cultivar diferences in tile growth and phisiological responses to the enhanced UV-B irradiation and specific leaf weight and UV-absorbing compounds in the leaves were highly related to the sensitivity of soybean by UV-B irradiation.
This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of supplemental UV-B application to the hardening phase of container-grown Betula platyphylla seedlings. The containerized seedlings were grown in a growth chamber for four months and then treated with UV-B(UV-$B_{BE}$$3.2KJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$ and $5.2KJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$) radiation and water stress regime(irrigation in one week interval) for four weeks. The differences in growth and physiological responses of the seedlings before and after the treatments were analyzed. UV-B radiation and water stress reduced height growth and leaf dry mass accumulation of the seedlings. The root collar diameter growth was reduced by UV-B radiation but increased by water stress. The reduction in leaf dry weight by UV-B radiation and water stress reduced T/R ratio of the seedling. The reduction in T/R ratio was the most apparent by water stress. Chlorophyll index observed by a chlorophyll meter was the lowest in the $5.2KJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$ of UV-B radiation, and those in the $3.2KJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$ and water stress were similar. UV-B radiation and water stress reduced both water content in the seedlings and leaf water potential, and increased leaf osmatic pressure. The water content of leaves and shoots was reduced more rapidly by UV-B radiation than by water stress treatment. In conclusion, growth responses and physiological changes in water relation by supplemental UV-B radiation which was applied to the hardening phase of container-grown Betula platyphylla seedlings were similar results to the water stress treatment.
UV-curable high refractive index di-functional epoxy acrylate, 4,4'-thiodibenzenethiol diglycidyl ether diacrylate, was synthesized from acrylic acid and 4,4'-thiodibenzenethiol diglycidyl ether that was obtained by reacting 4,4'-thiodibenzenethiol and epichlorohydrin using a direct method (Taffy process). Its chemical structure was identified by $^1H$ NMR and FTIR. After its dilution with a reactive diluent, 2-phenoxythiol ethyl acrylate as 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 wt% content, the relationship between their viscosity and refractive index was investigated. Their degree of cure decreased with increasing the amount of reactive diluent, and the refractive index of UV-cured film increased with increasing the degree of cure.
We designed and successfully synthesized UV curable, functional acrylate monomers having a polarizing group, i.e., an electron-withdrawing and/or electron-donating group for the optical materials of high refractive index. Optical polymer films made from the functional methacrylate monomers were achieved with photo crosslinking under UV illumination. A monomer having amino and cyano groups (Dimer-CN) exhibited the highest refractive index ($n_{TE}$=1.595 at 850nm) among the studied methacrylate derivatives, due to the large polarizability of the dipolar monomer structures with electron-donating and withdrawing groups. By controlling the compositions of the functional acrylate monomer of copolymers, the refractive indices of the polymers were readily adjusted within a wide range of 1.498-1.595. The copolymers showed a high glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ and good thermal stability, which are desirable for optical applications. $T_g$ and $T_{10%}$ (10%-weight loss occurred) of the copolymers ranged from $120-140^{\circ}C$ and from $329-387^{\circ}C$, respectively.
