The effect of nitric oxide (NO) on antioxidant system and protective mechanism against oxidative stress under UV-B radiation was investigated in leaves of maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings during 3 days growth period. UV-B irradiation caused a decrease of leaf biomass including leaf length, width and weight during growth. Application of NO donor, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), significantly alleviated UV-B stress induced growth suppression. NO donor permitted the survival of more green leaf tissue preventing chlorophyll content reduction and of higher quantum yield for photosystem II than in non-treated controls under UV-B stress, suggesting that NO has protective effect on chloroplast membrane in maize leaves. Flavonoids and anthocyanin, UV-B absorbing compounds, were significantly accumulated in the maize leaves upon UV-B exposure. Moreover, the increase of these compounds was intensified in the NO treated seedlings. UV-B treatment resulted in lipid peroxidation and induced accumulation of hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) in maize leaves, while NO donor prevented UV-B induced increase in the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and $H_2O_2$. These results demonstrate that NO serves as antioxidant agent able to scavenge $H_2O_2$ to protect plant cells from oxidative damage. The activities of two antioxidant enzymes that scavenge reactive oxygen species, catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in maize leaves in the presence of NO donor under UV-B stress were higher than those under UV-B stress alone. Application of 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4, 4, 5, 5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3- oxide (PTIO), a specific NO scavenger, to the maize leaves arrested NO donor mediated protective effect on leaf growth, photosynthetic pigment and free radical scavenging activity. However, PTIO had little effect on maize leaves under UV-B stress compared with that of UV-B stress alone. $N^{\omega}$-nitro-L-arginine (LNNA), an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), significantly increased $H_2O_2$ and MDA accumulation and decreased antioxidant enzyme activities in maize leaves under UV-B stress. This demonstrates that NOS inhibitor LNNA has opposite effects on oxidative resistance. From these results it is suggested that NO might act as a signal in activating active oxygen scavenging system that protects plants from oxidative stress induced by UV-B radiation and thus confer UV-B tolerance.

The necessity of disinfecting playground soil is an important issue, because pathogenic protozoa, bacteria, and parasite eggs remain viable for several months and can infect children. UV irradiation has been used to decontaminate water but its effectiveness on soil is unclear. We determined the efficacy of UV radiation for inactivation of an indicator bacteria, E. coli (strain ATCC 8739), on playground soil. While 99% inactivation of E. coli in the soil was readily achieved by UV radiation within 55 min at $0.4\;mW\;cm^{-2}$, complete inactivation was not achieved, even after prolonged treatment at $4\;mW\;cm^{-2}$. This was attributed to the irregular surface of the soil. A small number of E. coli escaped the UV radiation because they were situated in indentations or under small particles on the soil surface. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that the surface characteristics of the soil is the major limiting factor in the inactivation of E. coli by UV radiation. Thus UV treatment may not be adequate for disinfecting some soils and should be carefully evaluated before being used on playground soils.
To develop methods to reduce radiation risk and apply such knowledge to improvement of radiation protection, the effects of cobaltous chloride known as bioantimutagen on the function of E. coli RecA protein involved in the repair of DNA damage were examined. The results demonstrated two distinct effects of cobaltous chloride on the RecA protein function necessary for the strand exchange reaction. Cobaltous chloride enhanced the ability of RecA protein to displace SSB protein from single-stranded DNA and the duplex DNA-dependent ATPase activity. RecA protein was preferentially bound with UV-irradiated supercoiled DNA as compared with nonirradiated DNA The binding of RecA protein to UV-irradiated supercoiled DNA was enhanced in a dose-dependent manner. It is likely that studies on the factors affecting repair efficiency and the DNA repair proteins may provide information on the repair of ionizing radiation-induced DNA damage and the mechanism for DNA radioprotection.

To evaluate the ability of Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra var. henenis Strapf) leaf extract (BL) to protect the skin from photodamage, the gross and microscopic changes in the skin of hairless mice and BL-treated mice exposed chronically to ultraviolet (UV) were examined. The skin of the UV-irradiated mice showed characteristic signs of photoaging, such as deep wrinkles across the back, increased epidermal thickeness, numerous cell infiltration, and many enlarged keratinizing cysts. BL-treated mice showed a significantly decreased wrinkling score and lack of proliferation of cysts. By the 22nd week, 88.9% (i.p. with saline) or 60.0% (topical administration with cream base) of the UV-irradiated mice developed at least one tumor. BL delayed tumor onset significantly. BL (i.p.) was also effective in reducing the occurrence of UV radiation-induced skin tumors and reduced the number of tumors per mouse. After 22 weeks of treatment, 37.5% (i.p.) of the mice treated with BL were tumor-free. Tumor multiplicity was reduced by 81.2% (i.p.) in the BL treated groups. It is noted that skin that is chronically exposed to UV is subject to photoaging and photocarcinogenesis and regular use of BL would prevent these photodamaging effects of UV.
In this study, we fabricated high density polyethylene (HDPE) composites filled with antioxidants and UV stabilizers. The electron beam irradiation on the fabricated composites was carried out over a range of absorbed doses from 50 to 200 kGy to confirm the changes of discoloration. The changes of discoloration were characterized using a color difference meter and FT-IR for confirming the changes of the color difference and structural change. It was observed that the color difference of IRGANOX 1010-, IRGAFOS 168-, and TINUVIN 328- added HDPE was higher than that of the control HDPE by electron beam irradiation. The melting temperature of UV stabilizer-added HDPE was not significantly changed by electron beam irradiation. However, the melting temperature of phenol-containing antioxidant-added HDPE was increased with increasing the absorbed dose. And the melting temperature of phosphorus-containing antioxidant-added composite was decreased with increasing the absorbed dose.
Corona Virus Disease 19 pandemic (COVID-19) causes many deaths worldwide, and has enormous impacts on society and economy. The COVID-19 was caused by a new type of coronavirus (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Cornonavirus 2; SARS-CoV-2), which has been found that these viruses can be effectively inactivated by ultraviolet (UV) radiation of 290~315 nm. In this study, 90% inactivation time of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was analyzed using ground observation data from Brewer spectrophotometer at Yonsei University, Seoul and simulation data from UVSPEC for the period of 2015~2017 and 2020. Based on 12:00-13:00 noon time, the shortest virus inactivation time were estimated as 13.5 minutes in June and 4.8 minutes in July/August, respectively, under all sky and clear sky conditions. In the diurnal and seasonal variations, SARS-CoV-2 could be inactivated by 90% when exposed to UV radiation within 60 minutes from 10:00 to 14:00, for the period of spring to autumn. However, in winter season, the natural prevention effect was meaningless because the intensity of UV radiation weakened, and the time required for virus inactivation increased. The spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 is related to various and complex interactions of several variables, but the natural inactivation of viruses by UV radiation presented in this study, especially seasonal differences, need to be considered as major variables.
The effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation were investigated with regards to the microbial growth inhibitory effect on the shelf life of Korean native cattle (Hanwoo) beef prior to refrigerated storage. The Hanwoo samples were exposed to UV radiation ($4.5mW/cm^2$) for 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 min. The UV-irradiated beef that was exposed for 20 min showed significantly reduced mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacterial populations to the extent of approximately 3 log cycles, as compared to that of non-irradiated beef. About 2.5 Log CFU/g of mesophilic bacteria were different compared with UV-irradiated and non-irradiated meat. UV irradiation showed the most significant growth inhibition effects on mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria. Coliform and Gram-negative bacteria were also reduced by 1 log cycle. The population of L. monocytogenes, S. Typhimurium, and E. coli O157:H7 decreased significantly to 53.33, 39.68, and 45.76% after 10 min of UV irradiation. They decreased significantly to 84.64, 80.76, and 84.12%, respectively, after 20 min of UV irradiation. The results show that UV irradiation time and the inhibitory effect were proportional. These results verified that UV radiation prior to refrigeration can effectively reduce the number of pathogenic bacteria on the surface of meat and improve the meat's microbial safety.
The ozone depletion has caused plants to be exposed to an increased penetration of solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. Enhanced UV-B radiation may have influence on biological functions of plant in many aspects including inhibition of photosynthesis. It is evident that UV-B can potentially impair the performance of all three main component processes of photosynthesis, the photophosphorylation reactions of the thylakoid membrane, the $CO_2$-fixation reactions of the Calvin cycle and stomatal control of $CO_2$ supply. Owing to these depressed reactions, the production and allocation of carbohydrates might be markedly affected, and therefore, the growth and development of plant are distinctly reduced. In this review paper, we provide basic theory and further researches in terms of photosynthesis and carbohydrate synthesis in response to elevated UV-B radiation.

A number of factors combine to make ultraviolet radiation a superior means of water purification for ground water, rainwater harvesting systems and so on. Ultraviolet radiation is capable of destroying all types of bacteria. Additionally, ultraviolet radiation disinfects rapidly without the use of heat or chemical additives which may undesirably alter the composition of water. In a typical operation, water enters the inlet of a UV lamp and flows through the annular space between the quartz sleeve and the outside chamber wall. The irradiated water leaves through the outlet nozzle. Several design features are combined to determine the dosage delivered. The first is Wavelength output of the lamp, the Second is Length of the lamp - when the lamp is mounted parallel to the direction of water flow, the exposure time is proportional to the length of the lamp, the third is Design water flow rate - exposure time is inversely related to the linear flow rate, the forth is Diameter of the purification chamber - since the water itself absorbs UV energy, the delivered dosage diminishes logarithmically with the distance from the lamp. In this paper, It describe the how to design optimal UV disinfection device for ground water and rainwater. To search the optimal design method, it was performed computer simulation with 3D-CFD discrete ordinates model and manufactured prototype. Using proposed design method manufactured prototype applied to disinfection test and proved satisfied performance.
Mercury exchange fluxes between atmosphere and soil surface were measured in two different types of soils; lawn soil (LS) and forest soil (FS). Average Hg emission from LS was higher than from FS although the soil Hg content was more than 2 times higher in forest soil. In LS, Hg emissions were much greater in warm season than in cold season; however, deposition was dominant in FS during warm season because of leafy trees blocking the solar radiation reaching on the soil surface. In both LS and FS, Hg fluxes showed significantly positive correlations with UV radiation and soil surface temperature during cold season. In addition, it was observed that emission showed positive correlation with UV radiation and soil temperature while there was negative relationship between deposition and UV radiation.
