  • Continuous and intense UV irradiation on PTT film using two types of UV bulbs at different irradiation power level was carried out to modify surface characteristics of the film including zeta potential, wettability, surface energy, and dyeability. ESCA analysis of the irradiated film showed higher O/C ratio than the untreated film indicating photooxidation of outer surface layer. ATR analysis showed that the ester bonds were broken and some new groups were produced such as carboxylic acid, phenolic hydroxy, and other esters, implying that ester bonds of PTT was responsible for the observed photooxidation effect. The surface of the treated PTT film became more hydrophilic and wettable to water, coupled with increased surface energy. Polar component of the surface energy increased and nonpolar component decreased with increasing irradiation energy. The treatment also decreased zeta potential of the modified surface and nanoscale roughness increased with increasing irradiation. The dyeability of the treated films to catonic dyes was significantly improved by electrostatic and polar interaction between dye molecules and the anionic film surface. The UV irradiation seems to be a viable polymer surface modification technology, which has advantages such as no vacuum requirement and continuous process unlike plasma treatment.

  • Several mathematical relationships have been developed to describe bacterial responses to UV irradiation. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was taken as a bacterial model. The results obtained showed that the kinetics of disinfection is far to be as uniform. In fact, application of the model of Chick-Watson in its original form or modification, taking into account the speed change during the disinfection process, has not significantly improved results. The application of both models of Collins-Selleck and Hom constitute a major opportunity to simulate goodly the kinetics of UV disinfection. The results obtained showed that despite the major advantage held by applying the Hom model in this process of disinfection and for all strains studied, the model of Collins-Selleck gave the best results for the description of the UV inactivation process. The design of reactors, operating in continuous disinfection system, requires taking into account the hydrodynamic behaviour of water in the reactor. Knowing that a reduction of 4-log is necessary in the case of wastewater reuse for irrigation, a model integrating the expression of disinfection kinetics and the hydrodynamics through the UV irradiation room was proposed. The results highlight the interest to develop reactors in series working as four perfectly mixed reactors.

  • Ultra High molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE) films were photooxidized by UV/ozone irradiation. Reflectance of the irradiated films decreased in the low wavelength regions of visible light, indicating destructive interference of visible light due to roughened surface. The UV treatment developed the nano-scale roughness on the UHMWPE films surface, which increased by two-fold from 82.6 to 156.6nm in terms of peak-valley roughness. The UV irradiation caused the oxygen content of the UHMWPE film surface to increase. Water contact angle decreased from $83.2^{\circ}$ to $72.9^{\circ}$ and surface energy increased from 37.8 to 42.6mJ/$m^2$ with increasing UV energy. The surface energy change was attributed to significant contribution of polar component rather than nonpolar component indicating surface photooxidation of UHMWPE films. The increased dyeability to cationic dyes may be due to the photochemically introduced anionic and dipolar dyeing sites on the film surfaces.

  • Successful application of graphene requires development of various tools for its chemical modification. In this paper, we present a Raman spectroscopic investigation of the effects of UV light on single layer graphene with and without the presence of $O_2$ molecules. The UV emission from a low pressure Hg lamp photolyzes $O_2$ molecules into O atoms, which are known to form epoxy on the basal plane of graphene. The resulting surface epoxy groups were identified by the disorder-related Raman D band. It was also found that adhesive residues present in the graphene samples prepared by micro-mechanical exfoliation using adhesive tape severely interfere with the O atom reaction with graphene. The UV-induced reaction was also successfully applied to chemical vapor deposition-grown graphene. Since the current method can be readily carried out in ambient air only with UV light, it will be useful in modifying the surfaces of graphene and related materials.

  • Surface modification of hydrophobic polymeric materials to be hydrophilic or to have specific functional groups is of great importance for a diversity of applications of the materials. In this study, polyethylene (PE) film surfaces were modified by vapor phase photografting of hydrophilic vinyl monomers with different functional groups. The functional monomers were introduced on PE films by introducing the monomers in vapor phase using a vapor phase photografting apparatus designed by our laboratory. Functional monomers used were acrylic acid (negatively chargeable), acrylamide and allylalcohol (neutral), and allylamine and N,N-dimethyl aminopropyl acryamide (positively charged). The functional monomer-grafted PE film surfaces were characterized by the measurement of water contact angles and the attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The vapor phase photografting seems to be effective means for introduction of various functional groups onto polymeric substrates.

  • Low pressure mercury lamp type UV equipments have been widely used for cleaning and modification of PCB surfaces. To enhance the productivity of the process, we newly developed remote DBD type atmospheric pressure plasma equipment. The productivity of both equipments could be compared by measuring surface contact angle for various transferring speed. By the result of the measurement, we could verify that the productivity of the atmospheric pressure plasma be superior to the productivity of the UV equipment. XPS experiments confirmed that the surface effect of the UV and atmospheric pressure plasma processing are similar for each other. Organic contamination level was reduced after the processing and some surface elements were oxidized for both cases. Finally, the atmospheric pressure plasma equipment was adapted to flip chip BGA's flux printing process and it was concluded that the printing uniformity be enhanced by the atmospheric pressure plasma surface treatment.

  • Enzymatic modification of proteins is often used to increase the biological activity of materials. Silkworm powder has been investigated as a functional food resource, but no study has been performed on its modification by commercial food enzyme. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the feasibility of such modification of silkworm powder by alkaline protease. The activity of the enzyme was confirmed using an azocasein assay. Subsequently the silkworm powder was hydrolyzed by enzymatic treatment. UV visible spectrometry showed that the supernatant of silkworm powder subjected to enzymatic treatment had a stronger absorption band than the untreated powder. SDS-PAGE electrophoresis showed that the molecular weight of silkworm powder decreased on enzymatic treatment. Thus the results indicate that commercial enzymes might be used to modify the characteristics of silkworm powder.

  • Upon $UV/O_3$ irradiation cellulose acetate (CA) films showed modified surface properties such as increased hydrophilicity and surface roughness as well as increased dyeability to cationic dyes. UV treatment induced photoscission of acetyl groups in the main chain of CA resulting in decreased degree of substitution from 2.2 to 1.3. The slight decreases in reflectance and transmittance were caused by remarkably increased nano-scale surface roughness of the CA surface as much as 20-fold, which can destructively interfere with visible lights of wavelength lower thu 500nm. Water contact angle decreased from $54^{\circ}\;to\;14^{\circ}$ with increasing UV energy. Surface energy also increased slightly. The surface energy change was attributed to significant contribution of polar component rather than nonpolar component indicating surface photooxidation of CA film. The increased dyeability to cationic dyes in terms of both K/S and %E may be due to photochemically introduced anionic and dipolar dyeing sites on the film surfaces.

  • In this study, we proposed an effective and simple way to directly generate wrinkle patterns on a curved surface. A curved surface was prepared using a 3D printer and an UV (Ultraviolet)-lighting system was utilized to weakly polymerize the UV-curable thin resin layer coated on the surface, resulting in a gradient of material properties in the layer thickness. Subsequently, a thermal curing process was conducted to generate microscale wrinkles by compressive forces that were generated during complete curing. Wrinkle shapes from 5, 15, 25 sec of UV-light exposure were compared. With increasing UV-exposure, the line-width of wrinkles became thicker due to much higher strength of skin zone. The results indicated that the proposed fabrication process could be utilized for surface modification in diverse research fields.
