Activation of persulfate by UV and Fe2+ for the defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid

  • Efficient defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was achieved by integrating UV irradiation and $Fe^{2+}$ activation of persulfate ($S_2O{_8}^{2-}$). It was found that the UV-$Fe^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}-S_2O{_8}^{2-}$, and UV-$S_2O{_8}^{2-}$ processes caused defluorination efficiency of 6.4%, 1.6% and 23.2% for PFOA at pH 5.0 within 5 h, respectively, but a combined system of UV-$Fe^{2+}-S_2O{_8}^{2-}$ dramatically promoted the defluorination efficiency up to 63.3%. The beneficial synergistic behavior between $Fe^{2+}-S_2O{_8}^{2-}$ and UV-$S_2O{_8}^{2-}$ was demonstrated to be dependent on $Fe^{2+}$ dosage, initial $S_2O{_8}^{2-}$ concentration, and solution pH. The decomposition of PFOA resulted in generation of shorter-chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs), formic acid and fluoride ions. The generated PFCAs intermediates could be further defluorinated by adding supplementary $Fe^{2+}$ and, $S_2O{_8}^{2-}$ and re-adjusting solution pH in later reaction stage. The much enhanced PFOA defluorination in the UV-$Fe^{2+}-S_2O{_8}^{2-}$ system was attributed to the fact that the simultaneous employment of UV light and $Fe^{2+}$ not only greatly enhanced the activation of $S_2O{_8}^{2-}$ to form strong oxidizing sulfate radicals ($SO{_4}^{\cdot-}$), but also provided an additional decarboxylation pathway caused by electron transfer from PFOA to in situ generated $Fe^{3+}$.

  • In this study, the inactivation efficiency of Mycobacterium marinum was evaluated in buffered water (pH 7) using a low pressure ultraviolet (LP-UV) lamp, ultrasonic (US), and UV/US sequential processes. In the UV alone process, 3 log inactivation of the M. marinum was achieved with a UV dose of $120mJ/cm^2$. However, a tailing phase was later observed because M. marinum has a high tendency for cell aggregation. Even though the M. marinum was not inactivated in the US alone process, the hydrophobicity decreased and turbidity increased due to the crumbling of the cell aggregation. Among the candidate processes which were UV alone, US-UV sequential process and UV-US-UV sequential process, the US-UV sequential process showed the highest synergistic effects for M. marinum inactivation. Consequently, US is a very useful process as a UV irradiation pre-treatment to inactivate M. marinum in water.

고급산화공정에 의한 안료폐수 처리: 비교 연구 (Degradation of Dye Wastewater by Advanced Oxidation Process: A Comparative Study)

  • The degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in water was investigated in laboratory-scale experiments, using five advanced oxidation Processes (AOPs) $UV/H_2O_2$, lenten, photo-lenten, $UV/TiO_2,\;UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$. The photodegradation experiments were carried out in a fluidized bed photoreactor equipped with an immersed 32 W UV-C lamp as light source. initial decolorization rate and COD removal efficiency were evaluated and compared. The results obtained showed that the initial decolorization rate constant was quite different for each oxidation process. The relative order of decolorization was: photo-fenton > $UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$ > fenton > $UV/H_2O_2$ > $UV/TiO_2$ > UV > $H_2O_2$. The relative order of COD removal was different from decolorization: photo-fenten ${\fallingdotseq}$ $UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2\;>\;UV/TiO_2\;>\;fenton\;>\;UV/H_2O_2$. The Photo-lenten and $UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$ processes seem to be appropriate for decolorization and COD removal of dye wastewater.

UV-C를 이용한 광촉매 필터 디자인에 관한 연구 (A study on the photocatalyst filter design using UV-C)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 공기청정기의 극세필터(프로필터), 집진필터, 헤파(HAPA-High Efficiency Particulate Air)필터, 탈취필터 등을 사용하는 일반적인 필터의 구조를 분석하고 초미세먼지, 유해가스 및 살균 정화성능을 향상시킬 수 있는 새로운 형태의 공기정화 필터 디자인을 제시하는 것이다. 기존 단계적 여과 필터 형태에 광촉매 필터 시스템을 추가하는 방법으로 연구하였으며, 광촉매 필터는 좌우측의 UV-LED 설치 프레임과 광촉매 코팅 허니컴(honeycomb)프레임 3단 결합구조의 디자인으로 제안했다. 광촉매 필터의 살균소독 효과에 대해서는 향후 연구가 필요하며, 본 연구에서는 공기청정기에 광촉매 필터 적용 및 구조에 대하여 보고하고자 한다.

산소와 UV 조사된 $TiO_2$ 광전극의 표면형상과 전기화학적 특성 (The morphology and Phtoelectrochemical properties of $TiO_2$ electrode with UV Treatment and Oxygen Injection)

  • In this paper, in these case of photoelectrode using UV treatment after oxygen solar conversion efficiency is increased. According to oxygen injection UV treatment will removal residual organics and increase the TiO2 surface area but also UV treatment can affect the same chemical action of ozone treatment. More porous networks and larger porosities were obtained in the TiO2 films prepared UV treatment after oxygen injection.

광산화-활성탄 복합공정에 의한 B.T.X. 분해에 관한 연구 (A Study on the removal of B.T.X by UV Photooxidation-Activated Carbon)

  • In this study, The decomposition of gas-phase Benzene and Toluene, Xylene in air streams by direct UV Photolysis, UV/TiO$_2$ and UV/TiO$_2$/A.C process was studied. The experiments were carried out under various UV light intensities and initial concentrations of B.T.X to investigate and compare the removal efficiency of the pollutant. B.T.X was determined by GC-FID of gas samples taken from the a glass sampling bulb which was located at reactor inlet and outlet by gas-tight syringe. From this study, the results indicate that UV/TiO$_2$/A.C system (photooxidation-photocatalytic oxidation-adsorption process) is ideal for treatment of B.T.X from the small workplace. Although the results needs more verifications, the methodology seems to be reasonable and can be applied for various workplace (laundry, gas station et al.).

TiO2/UV 산화기술을 이용한 염색폐수처리에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Treatment of Dyeing Wastewater Using TiO2/UV)

  • This research uses the $TiO_2$/UV process to verify the most suitable condition and possibility to dispose dyeing wastewater that contains pigment and a large amount of pollutants. For this, this research has enforced experiments that compare photo adsorption, photolysis, and photo catalyst oxidation reaction, and also evaluated and analyzed the change of pH and $TiO_2$ dosage, irradiation rates of ultraviolet rays and the dosage change and injection method of $H_2O_2$. According to the results of the dyeing wastewater experiment of storehouse catalyst that uses the new form of $TiO_2$, the photo catalyst oxidation reaction proved to be more effective than photo adsorption and photolysis; 35%, 21% in the case of $TCOD_{cr}$ and 39%, 28% in the case of chromaticity. Taking into consideration the reaction time, amount of photo catalyst reaction and irradiation amount of ultraviolet rays, the decomposition efficiency of pH change proved to be most effective at pH 4. On the whole, the acidity area proved to be effective in dyeing water exclusion than neutral and alkalinity areas. Having evaluated the influence of $TiO_2$ dosage, not only does the decomposition efficiency continuously improve as the $TiO_2$ dosage increases but the shielding effect does not occur also when the $TiO_2$ is at a fixed state. The influence of ultraviolet irradiation amount concluded in the result that as the ultraviolet irradiation amount increases the decomposition efficiency continually increased, but in the case of chromaticity when the irradiation amount was higher than 37.8mW/cm2 the removal efficiency is slowed remarkably. The influence of $H_2O_2$ dosage evaluation reached the results that although the decomposition efficiency increases with the increase of $H_2O_2$ dosage, when above 150mg (total dosage: 1200mg) $H_2O_2$ consumes OH radical itself and reduces the decomposition efficiency. Also in the case of the $H_2O_2$ injection method rather than injecting in the whole amount of $H_2O_2$ (1200mg) needed at the beginning all at once, injecting divided quantities of $H_2O_2$ whenever the electric current density falls below 10mgfl reduces the wases of OH radical due to an excess of $H_2O_2$ and in tum heightens the decomposition efficiency.

TiO$_2$를 이용한 양돈장의 활성오니처리방류수의 탈색처리에 관한 연구 (Color Removal Efficiency for the Effluent of Activated Sludge Process for Pig Wastewater by TiO$_2$ Treatment System)

  • $TiO_2$를 이용한 활성오니처리방류수의 탈색효과를 알아보고자 용량이 10$\ell$인 원통형의 시험용 pilot plant에 유속을 분당 8$\ell$로 하여 $TiO_2$첨가량, $H_2O_2$ 첨가량, UV Intensity, pH 등에 대하여 최적처리조건 구명시험을 수행하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. $TiO_2$를 넣지 않은 경우와 4.0g/$\ell$넣은 경우 빛의 투과율이 낮아 처리 6시간에 색도 제거율이 가장 낮았으며, $TiO_2$를 1.0g/$\ell$를 넣은 시험에서 6시간에 59.7%의 색도 제거율을 보였으며 2.0g/$\ell$에서 52.5%의 색도 제거율을 보였다. 2. pH를 5.0으로 조정한 시험구에서 처리 전색도가 655cu 이었으나 처리 1시간 후 240cu로 63.4%의 색도 제거율을 보였다. 처리 5시간 후에는 146cu로 77.7%의 색도 제거효율을 보여 가장 높은 처리효율을 보였다. 3. 산화물질인 $H_2O_2$를 주입한 농도가 높을수록 ORP는 놀은 경향이었으며, 색도 제거율은 $H_2O_2$가 200mg/$\ell$일 때 가장 높았는데, 3시간 처리 후 41.7%, 6시간 처리 후 52.5%의 색도 제거 효율을 보였다. 4. UV 365nm에서 처리 6시간에 29.4%의 색도 제거 효율을 보인데 비하여 UV 254nm에서는 50.1%의 색도 제거율을 보여 UV 254nm가 색도 제거효율이 더 높았다.

UV/H2O2, UV/TiO2 시스템에서 염료의 색도 및 COD 제거 (Elimination of COD and Color of Dye by UV/H2O2, UV/TiO2 System)

  • The Photocatalytic decolorization and degradation of commercial dyes were studied using a batch reactor. Degussa P25 titanium dioxide and $H_2O_2$ were used as the photocatalyst and proved to be effective for dyes degradation when they were irradiated with UV light. The light source was a 20W low pressure mercury lamp. Three different kinds of dyes, such as direct dye(congo red), acid dye (acid black) and disperse dye(disperse blue) were tested. Extending the UV only treatment up to 120min, direct dye was decolorized to 60% and degraded to 30% as COD. On the other side, acid and disperse dyes were eliminated less than 10% as color and COD. But, color and COD were eliminated about 90% for all of the three dyes by $UV/H_2O_2$ system. And then the most effective decolorization was done for direct dye with 96% removal efficiency by $UV/TiO_2$ system at 120min with 500mg/L of $TiO_2$.

저압 및 중압 자외선 조사에 의해 불활성화된 Pseudomonas aeruginosa의 광회복능 조사 (Investigation of Potential Photoreactivation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa after LP or MP UV Irradiation)

  • Recently, there is growing interest in ultraviolet (UV) irradiation as a disinfection technic in drinking water production due to its effectiveness to inactivate microorganisms such as Crytosporidium parvum without forming disinfection byproducts. However, UV disinfection is known for its drawback such as photoreactivation. Despite many works concerning the photoreactivation, most of works were focused on indicator or non pathogenic microorganisms. The objective of this study is to examine the photoreactivation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa which is an opportunistic pathogen as UV radiation by LP and MP UV lamp was applied. The result showed that P. aeruginosa had high photo repair efficiency regardless of the type of UV irradiation. Both of the effective log repair values of LP and MP UV irradiation were found approximately 2.6 log. In addition, photo repaired P. aeruginosa was not significantly different in forming biofilm in comparison with non treated P. aeruginosa.
