  • In UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System), a protocol called UMTS AKA is used to authenticate MSs (Mobile Stations). When an MS is in a foreign network, the serving network contacts the AuC (Authentication Center) located at the home network of the MS to authenticate it. To reduce this cost, AuC sends n AVs(Authentication Vectors) to the serving network. Although the use of AVs allows the serving network to authenticate an MS without contacting the AuC each time, there are also shortcomings such as synchronization problem. Subsequently, a set of protocols adopting the same or similar method have been proposed. In this paper, we analyze and compare authentication protocols for UMTS with respect to the use of AVs and its alternatives. We conclude that using Kerberos-like ticket key overcomes some of the drawbacks of using AVs, whereas AVs provide much better security.

  • Ongoing standardization effort on 3G cellular system in 3GPP (UNTS) is based on GPRS core network and promises a global standard for systems capable of offering ubiquitous access to internet for mobile users. Considered radio access systems(FDD CDMA, TDD CDMA, and EDGE) are optimized for robust mobile use. However, there are alternative relatively high-rate radio interfaces being standardized for WLAN (IEEE802.11 and HIPER-LAN/2) which are capable of delivering significantly higher data rates to static or semi-static terminals with much less overhead. Also WPANs(BLUETOOTH, IEEE802.15), which will be present in virtually every mobile handset in the near future, are offering low cast and considerable access data rate and thus are very attractive for interworking scenarios. The prospect of using these interfaces as alternative RANs inthe modular UMTS architecture is very promising. Additionally, the recent inclusion of M-IP in the UMTS R99 standard opens the way for IP-level interfacing to the core network. This article offers an overview into WLAN-Cellular interworking. A brief overview of GPRS, UMTS cellular architectures and relevant WLAN standards is given. Possible interworking architectures are presented.

  • In view of mutual complementary feature of wide coverage and high data rate, the interworking between 3G cellular network and WLAN is a global trend of wireless communications. This paper introduces the analytic result of an authentication mechanism for 3GPP-WLAN seamless mobility under the USIM-based authentication test-bed. In a handover process between heterogeneous networks, authentication is the main factor of handover delay. So authentication processing time should be firstly reduced. This paper describes an USTM-based EAP-AKA test-bed implemented for handover in UMTS and WLAN interworking systems. Experimental result has shown that the fast re-authentication mechanism during handover has reduced the handover delay by about 48.6%.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel applying method of Mobile IPv6 service into the UMTS to solve the mapping problems in the GGSN TFT packet filter. The mobility management tables or the GGSN should be maintained as the same as the MN and the CN. Our proposed scheme copes with the problem when the RO procedure is not normally performed by using Mobile IPv6 signaling packets in the GGSN and adding a function block in the UMTS. To show the performance of our proposed algorithm, we accomplish the simulations of measuring the delay time in the cases of success and failure of the RO procedure. Also, the amount of transmission is observed when the packet transmission is assured in the case of the successful RO procedure.

  • UMTS/GPRS has its own QoS architecture, but additionally needs to support IP-QoS to provide Internet services. This paper describes an IP-QoS provisioning mechanism in the MPLS-based UMTS/GPRS network. We propose a QoS framework that includes the functional architecture of the MPLS-based GPRS networks and the efficient scheduling mechanism based on Diffserv model. The proposed scheduling mechanims is especially focused on the QoS support for real-time services. It also includes a new buffer management scheme that combines the priority queuing and weighted round robin method. The ns-2 simulator has been used to verify the validity of the proposed scheduling method.

  • Particularly in wireless communications, link errors severely affect the quality of the services due to the high error probability and the specific error characteristics (burst errors) in the radio access part of the network. In this work, we show that thorough analysis and appropriate modeling of radio-link error behavior are essential to evaluate and optimize higher layer protocols and services. They are also the basis for finding network-aware cross-layer processing algorithms which are capable of exploiting the specific properties of the link error statistics, such as predictability. This document presents the analysis of the radio link errors based on measurements in live Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) radio access networks as well as new link error models originating from that analysis. It is shown that the knowledge of the specific link error characteristics leads to significant improvements in the quality of streamed video by applying the proposed novel network- and content-aware cross-layer scheduling algorithms. Although based on live UMTS network experience, many of the conclusions in this work are of general validity and are not limited to UMTS only.

  • The research in internetworking between UMTS and WLAN, which is completed with merits and demerits, Is actively progressed to establish global roaming environments. This internetworking is classified into two groups: loosely-coupled and tightly-coupled. h tightly-coupled mechanism demands lots of investment and considerable amountof time to construct, which is directly connoted between UNTS and WLAN via IWU. On the other hand, a tersely-coupled mechanism is more scalable and easier to implement than a tightly-coupled one while it has critical drawbacks of packet loss and blocking of services due to handover delay. To alleviate these drawbacks. this work proposes a handover scheme between UMTS and WLAN, which is based on HMIPv6. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by the simaulation. The proposed internetworking scheme based on HMIPv6 shows hotter performance than those based on MIPv6.

  • By complementary integration of WLAN and UMTS, a Beyond third Generation(B3G) mobile network can be constructed to establish the fastest global roaming environments, There are 2 types of B3G networks: loosely-coupled and tightly-coupled, A tightly-coupled network demands lots of investment and considerable amount of time to construct. On the other hand a loosely-coupled network is more scalable and easier to implement than a tightly-coupled one, But it has critical drawbacks of packet loss and blocking of services due to handover delay, To alleviate these drawbacks this thesis proposes a vertical handover procedure between WLAN and UMTS, which is based on MAP of HMIPv6, Performance of the proposal is evaluated in terms of blocking probabilities, The proposed procedure based on HMIPv6 shows better performance than those based on MIP.

  • Recently, according to the rapid development of mobile system, the development of relative mobile components has been required, and especially, with the miniaturization of mobile component, the complex with nearby components has been progressed. In this paper, multi-output VC-TCXO (Voltage Controlled-Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator) for WCDMA integrates the additional CMOS inverter, so it can be the normal clipped sinewave output and additional CMOS output, and also it can be satisfied the VC-TCXO's requirements for WCDMA system. And the important characteristics of reference oscillator, like phase noise and frequency short term stability, are satisfied with WCDMA(UMTS) system's requirement In this paper, however, 25MHz is used for reference frequency, similarly and practically, we think that it can be used from 10MHz to 40MHz.

  • Mobile communication systems define user state transition mechanisms in order to manage radio resources and battery power efficiently. In the state transition mechanism, a state with a higher energy consumption inherently offers a shorter access delay, so there is a tradeoff between the energy and delay performances. In this paper, we analyze the user state transition mechanism of UMTS by considering the bursty traffic attributes of mobile applications. We perform a numerical evaluation for both the energy consumption and the activation delay by Markov modeling of the state transition mechanism, and investigate their tradeoff relationship as functions of operational parameters. The resulting energy-delay tradeoff curves clearly show an achievable performance bound of the user state transition mechanism and also offer an optimal operation strategy to minimize the energy consumption while guaranteeing the delay requirement.
